Camp Hale Booklet
The story of Camp Hale is not one told best in words and warmed-over phrases.
It is a story of mountains and streams, snow and beautiful skies. It is a story of intensive training - of rugged, foot-sore, mule-cussin' mountain climbers and skiers. Its also a story of after-work relaxation in the Service Club, at the theaters, post exchanges and churches.
This story we endeavor to bring to Hale men and women and their 'folks back home' in this pictorial record of Camp Hale, the two mile high training camp up in the Colorado Rockies. Camp Hale was named for Gen. Irving Hale, a Coloradoan who won the distinction in action in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection.
During the summer and early fall of 1942 Camp Hale was a hodge-podge of feverish construction, seas of mud, thousands of hard-living, hard-working civilians. On this scene came the vanguard of officers and men.
Today, nestling in a valley surrounded by some of the country's highest peaks, Camp Hale stands orderly, business-like, purposeful. And under wise and able leadership Camp Hale is faithfully fulfilling its mission in furnishing rugged, well-trained men for whatever duty may be theirs in this global war.
History of Leadville and Lake County, Colorado (Volume 1)
December 15, 1996
by Don L. Griswold (Author), Jean Harvey Griswold (Author)
In 1878 the name "Leadville" became synonymous with one of the world's greatest silver-producing regions. During the 1880s, when Leadville's economy was at its peak, the town was the second largest in Colorado, a mecca for prospectors, gamblers, retailers, performing artists, and entrepreneurs. In many respects, its history epitomizes the volatile character of Colorado's mining industry-from the rush to establish businesses, schools, churches, and newspapers in a booming mining camp to the conflict and violence of the miner's strike of 1896.
Leadville: Colorado's Magic City (The Pruett Series, 1)
The only full-length book of its kind, Leadville: Colorado's Magic City is a highly readable, well-researched people's history filled with the lore and magic that made Leadville great.
