The Federal Census occurs every ten years and are arranged by state and county. Entries on census schedules are by address. Additionally, the records are divided into small geographical areas called enumeration districts (ED).

NOTE: Additional records that apply to Lake County are also on the Colorado Census Records page.
In 1860, the state of Colorado did not exist. It's area was encompassed by Kansas Territory. And, in 1860, Lake County did not exist, either. Arapahoe County, Kansas Territory, covered a vast portion of what is now Colorado, including the present Lake County.
For the purpose of this index, only that portion of Arapahoe County which relates to Lake County has been extracted, namely the California Gulch segment. The rush of gold-seekers into California Gulch began in April of 1860. The hundreds of names appearing here, which were enumerated during the summer of 1860, attest to the lure of the precious metal.
NOTE In 1870, Colorado was a Territory and Lake County covered a vast area which extended from the backbone of the Rocky Mountains to the Utah border.
The 1870 census for Lake County is divided into four sections for four population centers; namely, Centerville, Fairplay, Granite, and Oro City. Due to later restructuring of Colorado counties, Centerville and Granite are now in Chaffee County and Fairplay is in Park County. The site of Oro City remains in Lake County.
The mystery is: "What became of the population between the Rockies and Utah?"
Text File- This is a file that I transcribed way back in 2005. Am adding it here for your convenience, with a few updates, a bit smaller sized file.
State censuses were often taken in years between the federal censuses. Colorado conducted the state census on June 1, 1885.
