Yuma County Pioneers - the Cowan Clan

Jesse Roland Cowan and Sarah Gardner / Edman / Cowan / Bell

Jessie / Jesse / Jess Cowan was born about 1882 in Kansas, and married Grace Elizabeth Huff there.  In 1910 they were farming in Smith County, Kansas.  Grace is 25, and they have Stella M., 6, Gertic 5, and Ray L. 5.- All were born in Kansas.

In 1919 Jess Cowan was paid $4.50 for working on the Yuma County roads.

He married Sarah Gardner Edman, the young widow of Minor Edman  May 24 in Yuma County (the May 24, 1914 listing could be a  transcription error. Sarah was the daughter of Elmer and Carrie Gardner

In 1920 Jesse is 38, and had Stella 15, Gertie 14, and Ray 12.  Sarah, his wife, is 21 with Dorothy Edman 4 and Cecil Edman 3. (the index has Edmunds) Cecil is a female. In the 1922 atlas they have about 300 acres just north of Eckley.

They also have another 300 acres about five miles southwest of Eckley.

The Eckley Centennial book said that J.R. Cowan operated the Continental gasoline/oil plant for a while (it implied in the mid-1920's)

In 1930 Jessie R. is farming in Washington, Benton County, Arkansas.  SERRAH COMAN is 31, born in Missouri,  and no occupations are listed for Stella 26, Gertie 24, and Ray 23.  Dorothy is 14, Cecil 12 AND they have three more kids - Mildred 8, Harry 7, and Merna four months.

In 1931 Bell F. Cochran filed suit for the partition of property against Dorthd Edman, Cecil Edman, Sarah Cowan as guardian of Dorthn Edman and Cecil Edman, Minor and George Jackson, for land in 29 and 32, 2N 46W.
In 1942 the heirs of Miner R. Edman, deceased, were Sarah Ellen Edman Leonard, Dorothy Alwilda Edman Ratliff, and Cecile Arbelia Edman Smith.

Strange about the listing for Stella - census says she's married, but no husband or kids with her.  Based on the ages of Dallas and Violet in the 1940 census, they would be six and seven years old in 1930.

April 27, 1950 Eckley "Mrs. Gertie Shelton of Denver spent the day here Sunday at the E. H. Morris home, visiting her father, Jess Cowan, who is ill."
August 3, 1950 "Mrs. Dean Cumley and son, Gary, returned to Denver after spending a few days with her father, Irwin Morris and helping in the care of her grandfather, Jess Cowan. Mrs. Mae Morris, Rusty's mother, is now staying with her sons and helping to care for Mr. Cowan until Mrs. Morris returns from Fort Bragg."
September 1950 "Ray Cowan came from Rogers Arkansas Thursday and visited here with his father, and sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Morris."
July 1954 "Scott Cowan from Portis, Kansas, visited during the week end at the home of his sister, Mrs. W.B. Weeks, and with a brother Jessie Cowan, who is ill. The latter lives at Eckley."

January 6, 1955 Yuma Pioneer

Jessie is buried in Eckley, # 52879540.

Above photo is Jesse Roland Cowan, Stella M. Cowan, and Ray Loyd Cowan. Far right Cynthia Cowan.

Ray Cowan married Pearl Belle Rodgers January 4, 1930 in Benton County.  Wonder why she's not on the census with him.  Ray died April 18, 1973 in Rogers, Arkansas and is buried in the Rogers Cemetery.

Pearl Cowan, 87, died March 8, 1994. She was born January 21, 1907 to Bert and Kathie Jones Rodgers. She was a homemaker, and a Jehovah's Witness. She was the widow of Ray L. Cowan. She is survived by two sons, Ora Don Cowan and Ira Lee Cowan; a daughter, JoBelle Fields; 18 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. Services were held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Rogers with Gary Owens officiating. Cremation arrangements were handled by Callison-Lough Funeral Home of Rogers.

J. R. Cowan in 1915 was in Smith County, Kansas, with G.E. 30, Stella 11, Gertrie 9, and Ray 7.  His 1918 WWI registration as a farmer in Eckley said that his wife was Grace, so  the Grace Huff wife of Jesse Cowan in the Crystal Plains, Smith County, cemetery must be his wife.

J.R. is in the 1934 Yuma County directory - Eckley section, and in the Heartstrong section in 1937 -  but these doesn't have spouse names.

Looks like Sarah stayed in Arkansas, 'cuz Cecile married Lewis Smith in Benton County Arkansas in 1935.

Arnold Ratcliff  : 21 Feb 1932  residence: Bentonville  age: 19
event place: , Benton County, Arkansas,

spouse: Dorothy Edman  spouse's age: 18
spouse's residence: Rogers, Benton, Arkansas
marriage license date: 21 Feb 1932

One Ancestry tree has Sarah dying August 30, 1987 in Denver,

and another has Dorothy marrying Arnold Floyd RATCLIFF.

But almost certainly she's the one in the California Death Index as Dorothy Arwilda Grondsman, born December 7, 1913 in Colorado, dying December 30, 1993 in Yuba City, Sutter County or Yuba County (Father's surname was EDMONDS).

Name: Dorothy A Grondsman
Birth Date: 1 Sep 1966 Address: 6416 N Valley View W Dr, Gig Harbor, WA, 98335 (1994)
[5960 Redburn Ave, Marysville, CA, 95901-6833 (1993)]

Jess R. Cowan in the 1940 census of Crawford, Cherokee, Kansas has him 59, with wife Anna 55, and their 1935 residence was Yuma Colorado.

May 17, 1945 Eckley

So the Anna Cowan in Park Cemetery, Cherokee County Kansas 1885-1945 must be Jess' third wife.  The FAG entry said she married Jess Cowan in 1933,  after she married Jim Roberts in 1902.  James Roberts died in 1950 so they must have split.

And there's a Jesse R. Cowan in the Eckley cemetery 1881-1954.

Jess Cowan my ggrandfather was born I think in Smith Center Kansas, he had a brother named Scott Cowan, also of Smith Center Kansas. Jesse married Sara(h)? she died in 1918. Jesse and Sara only had 2 children Stella who married Rusty Morris, they lived in Eckley Colorado, and Ray ( my grandfather ). According to my father Ira, Jesse had a stroke and moved in with Stella and her husband in Eckley Colorado. Jesse passed away while in Colorado living with Stella. Still looking?
Thanks, Lori

In 1920 Eckley, Irvin is the second of eleven kids of Jasper Morris, a drayman.  In 1910 they had been in Alma, Nebraska, with six kids.

The Eckley cemetery has a Stella Morris - 1904 - 1988, and two male Morris.  One, Merle 1911 - 1933 and another Ora G., 1906 -1953.  ( Jimmy Brophy of Yuma said Rusty ran the Eckley pool hall for a long time  so "Rusty"  probably is Ervin or Ora (Jimmy wasn't born until 1930, and wouldn't have remembered Merle).

The 1937 county directory has Morris, I. H. (w) Stella - Eckley, Section Man, (Violet, Dallas). (don't see that name in the 1934 directory)

The 1940 census has Ervin H., 38  born in Nebraska, a laborer on the railroad, with Stella M. 36, born in Kansas.  They have Dallas R. 17 a farm laborer and Violet G. 16- both kids born in Colorado.

Stella Morris was a charter member of the Eckley LYLO  (Ladies Young Ladies Old ) Home Demonstration Club.

One MyHeritage tree has Dallas Rex Morris 1922-1984 marrying Donna Marie Smith February 28,1925- September 2, 1982 and three children..  It has Ervin Henry Morris (Rusty) dying January 1, 1973

The tree has a note "Divorced" -- so that may be why there's no Donna Morris in Fort Logan Cemetery.  And why Dallas isn't in the class reunion photos from 1979.

This must be the same Donna M. Smith in Eckley in 1940, living with her aunt and uncle Albert and Maud Owens.    And her parents might be in Riverside California

The 1937 directory has "Owens, Albert (w) Maud - Eckley, Barber and Cream Station,  (Donie, Marie)."

The 1934 directory only has Maud running a creamery in Eckley - no mention of Albert.  They're buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Denver,  Maud 1893-1967 and Albert  1894-1963

South Dakota Birth Index has Albert Pierce Owens born February 24, 1894 in Brown County to John W. Owens and Mary Roberts

PHILLIPS COUNTY'S CONTINGENT
Local Boys Won't Wait for Compulsory Service, but Enlist in the National Guard

As the time approaches for the selection of men under the compulsory service act, a number of the boys have decided to enlist and go as a local unity of Company A. Colorado National Guard, 2nd Infantry.

This is a company being recruited by Captain H.E. Isley of Denver and Lieutenant O.B. Kalbaugh of Eckley. About twenty-five members were secured and passed this week by the Captain who was in Holyoke on Saturday. At an early date the boys will be assembled at some common point and sworn into the service of the United States government. The number required under conscription will be called about August 5th and a portion of these will no doubt be used to recruit the regular army to full war strength. Others will go to Fort Riley, Kansas, for intensive training until the spring campaign next year.

The boys who enlisted at Haxtun are: .....,Albert Owens, ........

===============================================

That Haxtun location sure makes the 1900 census with George C. Smith farming in the eastern part of Logan County - very near Haxtun, with wife Sarah Smith and stepchildren Mary Garwood born 1884 in Arkansas, Jacob S. Garwood born 1889 in Colorado, and Maud Goddard born 1893 in Colorado, very tempting.  All three kids had parents born in Arkansas.  Bet the "Garwood" should be "Goddard".

Maud might be the wife of Clifford Goddard in 1910 Phillips County, and by 1920 Clifford had married Clara - different ages, and had a bunch of step-children. So maybe Maud and Clifford split, and then Maud married Albert Owens.  If so, Maud may be the mother of Jessie.Goddard Smith Jones.

One Ancestry tree has Clifford Goddard and Maude Smith as parents of Jessie Goddard Jones.  There's a Jessie Jones dying 1987 in the Holyoke cemetery, in the same plot at William Clifford Goddard and Clarissa.A Goddard.

Ora Joslin wrote in September 1914:

Lucy, Rosa and I went to Ladies Aid again yesterday, at Mrs. Ford’s.  Didn't have far to go.  Mrs. Clarkson went with us.  They meet next time with Mrs. Goddard about five miles from here.  We want to go if possible.  She is a real nice little woman.  Has two children, a little boy "Dene" that makes me think of Leonard, he is so little and frail, and a baby girl that is just as frail looking as the boy.  Dene was sick yesterday, had some fever and looked so tired.  Said she didn't know as she ought to have come, but thought the ride might make him feel better.  It was quite cool, and only four miles.  You know that isn't very far in this country.  Of course we had a dandy time and a good supper.  There were only eight ladies there but the house is small so it was enough to be comfortable.

LAST RITES FRIDAY FOR C. GODDARD

Funeral services were held last Friday afternoon from the First Christian Church in Holyoke for W.C. "Cliff" Goddard who passed away in his sleep Monday evening, January 6. He was 92 years of age.

Dale Arnold, minister of the church, officiated at the services. Burial was in Holyoke Memorial Park.

William Clifford Goddard was the oldest son of Samuel D. and Mary E. Goddard. He was born in Ravanna, Missouri, on September 15, 1883.

He came to Phillips County at the age of four when his parents came by wagon to settle north of Paoli. There he lived with his six brothers and one sister. It was a happy childhood in the pioneer home. The income was mainly from cattle raising and Mr. Goddard continued in this profession until he retired a few years ago.

While on the school board over 60 years ago, he met the teacher, Clarissa Pendleton Latta. Their friendship increased, and on December 24, 1914, in the G.M. Hitt home, they were united in marriage.

Each had a daughter by a previous marriage, Mrs. Jessie Jones of Anchorage, Alaska and Mrs. Junia Richmond of Gibbstown, New Jersey. After the school term, 60 years ago, Cliff and Clara moved to a homestead southwest of Holyoke, where they were making their home at the time of Mr. Goddard's death.

Two years after moving to their home, twin daughters were born, Mrs. Velma Sprague and Mrs. Verda Pollock. A few years later Mrs. Willa Zick and Mrs. Edythe Rossi were born, making a family of six daughters.

During the depression, when it was difficult to make a living with cattle and farming, Mr. Goddard worked as deputy sheriff for a number of years. He also served many years on the school board and the high school board.

Mr. Goddard passed away in his sleep Monday night. On Monday he had participated in ordering some new clothes and helped in the plans being made to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. December 24th was the date, and the anniversary had been celebrated in several small groups, but on January 18 it was hoped to have a bigger, better one.

Mr. Goddard will continue to live in the hearts of his wife, six daughters, six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, one sister, and four brothers.

RITES FOR MRS. GODDARD MARCH 12

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 12, 1975, from the First Christian Church in Holyoke for Mrs. W.C. Goddard, who passed away March 8, at the Sheridan Manor Nursing Home.

Dale Arnold, minister of the church officiated at the services. Interment was in Holyoke Memorial Park.

Clarissa Ann Pendleton Goddard was the second child of seven children of James Howard Douglas and Mary Elizabeth Low Pendleton. She was born in Idaho Falls, Colorado on November 12, 1882.

Mr. Pendleton was a carpenter and designer of houses. Part of Clara's early life was spent in Kansas where her father was to contract and build houses. When this was finished, they moved to Boulder, Colorado, where they made their permanent home. Her father designed and built their home on University Avenue, and it was a happy home on the mountain side, with parents, one brother and five sisters.

While the younger children were still small, Mr. Pendleton died leaving a mother and several small children. Together they all worked and managed high school and college for those who wanted it.

Clara chose the teaching profession and taught school in the Haxtun and Holyoke area where she met Cliff Goddard who was a member of the school board. Their friendship increased and they were married on December 24, 1914 in the G.M. Hitt home.

Each had a daughter by a previous marriage, Mrs. Jessie Jones of Anchorage, Alaska, and Mrs. Junia Richmond of Gibbstown, New Jersey. After the school term, Cliff and Clara moved to a homestead southwest of Holyoke where they made their home for sixty years. They were living at the homestead at the time of Mr. Goddard's death on January 6, 1975.

Two years after moving to their home, twin daughters were born, Mrs. Velma Sprague and Mrs. Verda Pollock. A few years later, Mrs. Willa Zick and Mrs. Edythe Rossi were born, making a family of six daughters.

Clara passed away on March 8, at the age of 92 years after two months of illness. Preceding her in death were her loving husband, Cliff, her parents, one brother and three sisters.

Surviving, besides her children, are two sisters, Amy and Grace Pendleton of California, six grandchildren, five great grandchildren as well as many relatives and friends.

The 1940 Fort Morgan, Colorado census has a Sarah Bell, WIDOWED, born Missouri 1899, working as a cook on a WPA project.  She has Mildred, 18, Harvey 17, and Meritha 14, all born in Arkansas.  In 1935 they had lived in Hope Arkansas.  So this must be our Sarah Gardner./ Edman / Cowan.

Harvey enlisted in the army in Denver in 1943 - said he had farming experience and was single.
