The Fox family moved to western Kansas in the fall of 1886, from there to Colorado in March 1893 where the Fox brothers established their ranch on the Arickaree of which Emmett was a member of the firm, where he spent the remainder of his life helping in the building up of the ranch and their various other enterprises. His quiet, unassuming manner and his fair dealing with all whom he came in contact with won him the respect and affection of all. Emmett’s life was that of a pioneer, bravely and cheerfully facing the dangers, exposure and hardships which can only be realized by those engaged in early day ranching. He was the posessor of a keen mind and hi s ready wit and excellent judgment pertaining to all matters concerning the cattle business and an absolute disregard of personal danger caused him to be much sought after and greatly admired which marked him a man among men. During the writers friendship with the deceased which has extended over a period of twenty-five years, I have never heard him speak an unkind word or did I ever know him to fail to extend tender and sympathetic help to those in sorrow or distress. The body of Maude J. Pratt, about 70, was found Friday morning in her farmhouse about 11 miles from Billings on the Duck Creek road. Coroner Boice said it was believed she had been dead for three days.

Robert McElvie, who lives near the woman, had been bringing some scrap firewood to the woman, who lived alone, and looked through the house window when he became suspicious something might have happened. He said she was lying on her bed. Mrs. Pratt had reportedly been ill recently and McElvie said he hadn't seen her around the area for the last three days. John W. Furneaux of Denver cited by the veterans administration Sunday as an example of what can be accomplished by a veteran, handicapped by the loss of both legs. Furneaux, who learned to walk with a pair of artificial limbs and the occasional help of a cane, has entered his final years of the University of Colorado in Boulder where he is completing four years of work in three, the VA said. When he receives his electrical engineering degree in June, 1949, he expects to start work with a large electrical firm in the east. Furneaux enlisted in the army air forces in 1942 after completing one year at the University of Denver. In 1944, a plane he was piloting was hit by German fire and crashed in flames near the German-Dutch border. He was removed from the plane, but his legs were badly burned and later it was fund necessary to amputate them at a German prison hospital. He also suffered a severe eye injury in the crash, but his sight was saved.
