February 13, 1913 "The people of this part of the county were shocked last Saturday when one of the most outrageous deeds ever committed in this county came to light. A week ago last Tuesday Miss Emma Horstman, age 22, was brought to Wray in an unconscious condition, suffering concussion of the brain. She is the oldest daughter of Christian Horstman a farmer living seven miles southwest of Vernon. The cause of her condition was then said to be an accidental fall in which her head received a heavy jar, but it was learned last Friday that the concussion of the brain was caused by a beating which her father gave her early on the morning of the day she was brought to town. Sheriff Bullard went out to place Horstman under arrest last Friday night and found a crowd of men gathered at a schoolhouse near the Horstman home who had gathered there to decide what to do in the case. The Sheriff brought Horstman to Wray and lodged him in the county jail.
The story of the affair as told by the Horstman children to the neighbors is the following substance; The family arose at about 2:00 a. m. on the morning of the trouble, in order for the boys to get an early start to market with grain. Horstman began drinking liquor as soon as he got up and was in a bad humor. After a while he began to abuse Mrs. Horstman and she became frightened and hid from him. Then at the breakfast table he began to abuse the daughter by slapping her on first one side of the head and then on the other and then knocking her down with his fist and finally throwing her on a bed and beating her while she lay there. When he finally realized that she was badly hurt and the mother came from her hiding, it was decided to send for a doctor.
When the doctor arrived he ordered the girl brought to Wray for medical attention. This is as far as the children knew of the matter. The girl is in a very critical condition at the Ridgway house. She is still unconscious and there is little hope of her recovery. It is now nine days since the trouble occured and she has been conscious only a few times and then only for an instant. Feeling is very bitter against Horstman for his part in this affair, for it is not the first abuse his family has suffered at his hands, but rather a climax to twenty years of ill-treatment. It has only been a few weeks since he beat his wife unmercifully and was arrested on complaint of his son, after Mrs. Horstman had kept in hiding for a couple of days. This trouble was then smoothed over with promises of good behavior in the future and Horstman was released from custody.
The court has fixed tho amout of Horstmans bond at $5000, but so far no bond has been furnished and he is still in jail. Members of the family and some of the neighbors have expressed fears for the family if the prisoner should succeed in getting out on bail. The whole affair is very lamentable for the immediate family and many relatives of the family, are among our most respected citizens , and they no doubt feel a keen sense of humiliation over such an action on the part of one of their kin."
December 1914 "Christ Horstman was in Wray last Saturday. Since his departure from Yuma county, he has been residing at Lockwood, Missouri, but lately came out as far as Haigler, Nebraska, where he opened negotiations with his family with the end in view of returning to this county. The report is that he returned east without effecting the attempt reconciliation. It will be remembered by Gazette readers that Horstman was in jail a couple of years for cruelly heating his wife.
Divorce proceedings were instituted by the wife and the whole affair was settled by Mrs. Horstman getting divorce upon a satisfactory division of the property and with the understanding that Horstman was to leave the state and stay away."

April 1915 " Christian Horstmann arrived in Wray last Saturday, from Missouri. Mr. Horstmann is looking for a location to again make his home in Yuma county."
