"FUNERAL OF W. M. HENDERSON -
It Will Take Place At 2:30 PM Tomorrow -
Sketch of a Pioneer -
Funeral services over the remains of the late William M. Henderson will be held at the residence, No 62 North Washington street, Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev Charles L Shipman, of Girard, and the Rev Samuel Semple, of the First Presbyterian church, of this city, will conduct the services. The remains will be laid to rest in Woodlawn cemetery where several generations of the Henderson family are buried.
William L. Henderson was the son of Samuel Henderson,
who with his father and brothers came from near Harrisburg to Crawford county
in 1803. The subject of this sketch was born in 1816, two miles from
Titusville. Upon attaining manhood he engaged in the lumber business,
in which he continued till 1859. In the early 60's he became identified
with the oil industry, and during the war was in the revenue service for
the government. In politics Mr. Henderson was an ardent Republican and
cast the first Republican vote and the only one at that election
in Oil Creek township. About 1868 he removed his family to Titusville
and shortly afterward was elected as a member of the school board,
serving in that capacity for a number of years. It is related of deceased
that during his term of office the school board, becoming temporarily
embarrassed, he advanced it the sum necessary for the carrying on of
the school work. In 1877 he was appointed city treasurer by the councils
and when the charter was changed, was elected to the position,
serving until 1880. He also served the Second ward in the common
council from 1881 to 1885, when he retired from active work.
Mr. Henderson was a man of sterling worth, a power for good in his day
in the community in which he lived.
Besides his children, Mrs. Frederick Feezer (sic) [Fezer], of Greeley
, Colo; John M. Henderson, Milton and Lee Henderson, of Sterling, Colo;,
deceased is survived by one brother, Joseph C. Henderson, of Oil Creek
township; two sisters, Mrs. David White, Forestville, NY, and Mrs.
Sarah Andre, of near Pleasantville. His daughter, Dr. Ida Henderson,
preceded him to the grave five years ago, and his wife three years ago."
(Titusville Herald, May 7, 1900, p.3)"
So the Henderson brothers were Lydia (White) Smith's cousins.
MARTIN ARRIVES IN STERLING
Calvin Goodwin wrote thirty years later ""We left Bay
Verte the first of August, 1867, and the date I moved to the
Sterling valley was June 21, 1872. At that time the following
settlers were all who were there: Columbus Chambers,
at the American ranch on the mouth of Beaver creek;
next came Henry Nicholson, eight miles below. and
then Bascom. There were no more settlers on the south side
of the river until the mouth of Cedar Creek was located
where Brush's cattle ranch was located, and the
Henderson boys and M. H. Smith were at that ranch.
That is all on the south side of the the river."
Martin H. Smith claimed a quarter in section 23,
8N 52W in 1882.
"M. H. Smith staked a claim near the old Jim Moore
ranch, three miles east of Sterllng on the south side of the
river: the present flne farm belonging to tbe Smith estate
is the original location."
June 1885 "Miss Lydia A. White from Denver, a Cousin to M. H.
