RUTH

Benjamin Ferdinand Specht registered for WWI in Willard, born July 3, 1888 in Berlin, Germany, naturalized, farming, with a wife and four children.

March 1917 "Avenging alleged violation of the sanctity of his home, Ben Speck, a young ranchman of the Willard country, fired two bullets into the body of Ira Cosselman, also of Willard, on Saturday. The crime was committed in a stall in the Lindsay Feed and Sales stable, at the corner of Front and Ash streets, at about 4:45 in the afternoon.
Immediately after the shooting Speck went to the sheriff’s office and gave himself up. He informed Deputy Sheriff Stern that he shot a man and wanted to surrender. He turned over his gun. Three chambers of it, a .32 caliber weapon, were empty, but so far as the doctors attending the injured man could determine only two took effect. Cosselman was cared for at once and Dr. Kellogg was called to attend his wounds. One bullet entered the chest and glanced off to the right, but it is the belief that it did not penetrate the lung, although the patient spit out a little blood on Sunday. The other bullet was fired after Cosselman started to run from the stable and passed between the arm and body just tearing the skin on the abdomen. The two men came from Willard Saturday morning. Whether or not they met during the day previous to the time of the shooting, is not known, although it is believed that they avoided one another or the crime would have been committed earlier.
Shortly after 4 o’clock the two men met on Main street near Third. According to the story of Cosselman, Speck asked him to accompany him around to the Lindsay stables and see a horse, and that as soon as they entered an empty stall Speck pulled a gun and fired, point blank. Speck says that he asked Cosselman if he had “sinned against his home.” and that Cosselman admitted he did. Speck then fired the shots. Soon after he was placed in the county jail, Speck declared that "a broken home” was what made him do it. While the patient was in such condition that it wasn’t advisable to probe for the bullet, it was the opinion of the attending surgeons that Cosselman would recover. The patient himself, however, was afraid that it was all over with him and he gave directions as to what should be told his relatives and also expressed a desire to make a statement. Deputy District Attorney Turman was called and took the statement. An information against Speck will not be filed for a day or so, to await an possible change in the condition of the man who was shot. If he shows prospects of recovery the information will change assault to murder, which will enable the defendant to secure release on bonds, the understanding being that should Cosselman die the charge will be changed. Speck has secured the law firm of Coen, Morison & Sauter to defend his case."

"Ben Speck, a ranchman, shot and fatally wounded Ira Cosselman Saturday. Speck accuses Cosselman of hreal-ing up his home. Speck says that he asked Cosselman if he had "sinned against his home." and that Cosselman admitted he did. Speck then fired the shots. Soon after he was placed in the county jail, Speck declared that "a broken home" was what made him do it. The wounded man may recover."

March 1917 "Ira Cosselman, who was shot in the breast over a week ago by Ben Specht, is still in bed, although he is recovering from his wounds. The bullet has been located, although not yet removed. It is imbedded in the muscle in the right side of the chest."
