"Benjamin F. Howe, 92, died Sept. 16, 2007, at Hutchinson Hospital.
He was born Dec. 27, 1914, in Greeley, Colo., the son of Frank and Goldie Dotie Howe. He served in the U.S. Air Corps during World War II. He lived in Evanston, Wyo., before moving to Buhler in 1968. He worked for Buhler Mills for 10 years, then he worked for CertainTeed Manufacturing for nine years.

Other survivors include: two sons, Frank, Boise, Idaho, and Rex, Wichita; two daughters, Arlene Furr, Ponca City, Okla., and Pat Shepperd, Camby, Ore.; two stepsons, Jerry Bolte, Nickerson, and Les Bolte, Hutchinson; 13 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.

At 92, Benjamin Howe was known around Buhler as "Gentle Ben," always with a smile and a kind word.
Like clockwork the tenderhearted man made daily rounds around town beginning at 9 a.m. in the post office.
Howe died Sept. 16, leaving a wife, Pat, who will miss him terribly, she said.
The couple had been married 16 years, a second marriage for both of them.
First, they knew each other as neighbors when Ben was caring for his invalid wife, Lucille, who died in 1990. Pat Howe had been a widow for a number of years and stopped by to visit the widower.
"He had made some fresh strawberry shortcake," Pat Howe said. They enjoyed each other's company. She needed a friend to talk to, but didn't consider herself marriage material because she was raising a 2-year-old with special needs.
But Howe explained that the child was just another human being in need of love. He asked her to marry him.
They became a blended family. Along with accepting the child, Alex Voth, as a grandson, Howe had his own brood that included sons Frank of Boise, Idaho, and Rex, of Wichita; two daughters Arlene Furr, of Ponca City, Okla., and Pat Shepperd, of Camby, Ore.
After retiring from CertainTeed Manufacturing, he took up caning furniture. It was a lost art that he picked up when he was about 18 years old. There were a lot of people needing pieces of furniture caned. He kept busy with it.
However, three years ago he hit his head and suffered a hematoma.
"He completely forgot how to cane after that, and couldn't do it again," she said.
Howe even tried reading a book with instructions, but couldn't get it.
The worst day of his life, according to his wife, was when he had to call a man to come get his chairs.
"It hurt him so bad," his wife said.
He then took up growing roses with great enthusiasm. He loved to share the blossoms around town.
While he loved his roses, he attacked the dandelions in his yard with a vengeance.
Neighbors would see his rear in the air and know spring had arrived. He would be on his knees, digging with a knife, determined not to miss one of the pesky weeds.
"He read the Bible to me every night and brought me coffee in bed," she said. "He spoiled me."
While she'll miss him terribly, she's thankful for the time they had.
Sixteen years they weren't alone."
