R.A. Calkins a settler of the Hooper community fifty years ago, passed away
last Wednesday, November 9, 1932, at Fremont at the age of 80 years and 9
days, death being due to ailments incidential to old age. His remains were
brought to Hooper and taken care of by the Wollmer and Waine mortuary
service, and give repose in their funeral home awaiting the day of the
funeral.
Funeral services were held at two o'clock Saturday afternoon from the
funeral home with Rev. A.S. Pannbacker, pastor of Zion Lutheran church as
the officiating clergyman. Music was furnished by singers from that church.
Internment was made in Logan cemtery where rest the remains of Mrs. Calkins
and four children.
Renssellaer Addison Calkins was born at Brooklyn, N.Y. October 31, 1852.
When a boy he moved to Beloit, Wisc. where on June 22, 1876, he was married
to Miss Flora Christbelle Craig. Shortley after their marriage the young
couple came to Nebraska and started farming on the present John F. Haye
farm, southeast of Hooper. They occupied this place until 1888 when they
came to Hooper, he engaged in the livery and feed stable business. As a
Hooper businessman and resident, Mr. Calkins became well known and
respected, and active in the affairs of the town.
Following the death of Mrs. Calkins in 1898, he went to Portland, Oregon
where he held the office of deputy coroner for many years. He returned to
Nebraska in 1921 and for eights years made his home with his daughter Mrs.
M.S. (Morton Sumner) Mack and family. For the past three years he had lived
in Fremont.
He leaves to mourn his death, three daughters and one son, Mrs. Maie Tucker
of Garden City, Kansas, Mrs. Morton (Ida) Mack of Hooper, Mrs. Arthur
Marquardt of Ewing and Harry Calkins of Omaha. He is also survived by twenty
grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Friends and relatives of the Morton S. Mack family were greatly surprised
and grieved Tuesday afternoon to learn of Mrs. Mack's sudden death from the
effects of a heart attack which she suffered that afternoon and from which
she did not rally.
Mrs. Morton S. Mack, as Ida Claire Calkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Rensloer Calkins, was born at Hooper July 2, 1882, and passed away November
2, 1937 at the age of 55 years and 4 months.
She had been in failing health for the past couple of years, but was quite
as usual up until the last day of her death.
Mrs. Mack, a quiet little woman devoted to her husband and family was judged
by those who knew her best as a kind neighbor and friend willing to take the
time from her very busy days to assist others wherever she could do so.
Surviving to mourn the loss of this loving wife and mother, are her husband
and eleven sons and daughters namely, Morton C. Fremont, Mrs. Earl May
Hooper, Gordon, Albany, Georgia, Mrs. ? Keokuk, Iowa, Mrs. Lyle Sampson ?,
Iowa, Lawrence, Norman, Avis, Dale, Marion, and Donald ?. She is also
survived by seven grandchildren, two sisters and one brother. The sisters
are: Mrs. Mate Tucker, Grants Pass, Oregon, Mrs. A.H. Marquardt, Ewine, the
brother Harry Calkins of Omaha.
Funeral arragements awaiting the arrival of Gordon from Georgia are set for
Saturday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock at the Methodist Church with Rev. E.V.
Price in charge. Burial directed by Wollmey & Waine, will be made in the
Hooper cemetery.
