Jane E. Pugh claimed a quarter in 27, 6S 46W in 1907, and another 40 acres in section 26 in 1920.

John J. Pugh claimed 80 acres in June 1900 in section 26, and another 80 acres in section 14 in September 1900.
a quarter in sections 27 and 34, 6S 46W in 1911.

1916 "Miss Gladys Pugh and sister, Mrs. Jerry Guy, were in Wray Tuesday attending to business.  They are from the Kirk neighborhood."

In 1910 Tuttle precinct, Kit Carson County, John J. Pugh is 52, born in Wales, Jane E. 47, Iowa, Leona A. 23, Mabel A. 17 Gladys M. 14, Loyd L. 10, Richard L. 9, Clara A. 7, Helen L. 4 , and newborn Kenneth J., all kids born in Colorado.

August 18, 1910 "Kenneth J., the year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Pugh, died at their residence north of town, Monday, August 15th. The funeral services were held Wednesday and interment was had in the Burlington cemetery. Mrs. L. H. Bevier conducted a short burial service at the grave. Mr. and Mrs. Pugh have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement."
February 8, 1912 "J. J. Pugh and daughter have returned from a winters visit with old friends and relatives in Wales. "

February 1912 "Miss Elizabeth Powell and Messrs. Harry Whiticus and Richard Lloyd of Wales, are visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Pugh of Tuttle. Miss Powell is a niece of Mr. Pugh and the gentlemen are friends of the family."

(Wonder if this is the Elizabeth Powell who claimed two quarters in 27 and 34, 6S 46W in 1917...)

Elizabeth Powell married Morton H. Davis on June 27, 1917, recorded in Kit Carson County. Lloyd is 31, Tessie 24 born in Oklahoma, with Robert 2 born in Colorado. Wiliam Richards, an uncle, is 65 born i Iowa.

John J. Pugh died at his home near Tuttle on Wednesday, April 23, 1913 from the effects of a stroke of apoplexy suffered ten days prior while sitting quietly in his chair. Prior to this attack Mr. Pugh enjoyed the best of health; the shock coming on without previous warning. The end of the dying pioneer came quietly as though he were sleeping. John Pugh was closely identified with the history of Kit Carson county ever since he crossed the plains twenty-six years ago. Few men have been more prominently identified with the commercial, political and educational development of our county than has Mr. Pugh. John J. Pugh was born at Llanidloes, North Wales, December 25, 1856. He came to America in September 1878 and settled in Louisa County, Iowa, where he remained for five years. Later he spent two years in New Mexico and twenty six years ago he came to Kit Carson County. At Columbia City, Iowa he was united in marriage to Miss Jane Richards on February 22, 1886. To this union was born twelve children, seven boys and five girls. Four of the boys died in infancy.
In early life he was affiliated with the Baptist church, but later joined the Congregational denomination. He was a member of the Woodmen and Odd Fellow Lodges, Columbus City Lodge K of P., and Burlington Lodge No. 79 L.F.A.M. The deceased is survived by a widow, eight children and an aged mother in Wales. Also Thomas L. Jones of Stratton, Arthur, David and Marguerite Jones of Llanidloes, North Wales, half brothers and sister of Mr. Pugh. The funeral services were held at the Pugh residence. The local Masonic lodge had charge of the services at the grave. (April 25, 1913).

May 29, 1958 "Mr. and Mrs. Ora Street and Mrs. Helen Meade motored to Stratton and visited Tom and Eloise (Gross) Brown at the Lloyd Pugh home. Mrs. Jane Pugh and Mrs. Leona Stapp were also guests at the Lloyd Pugh home that evening."

PIONEER RESIDENT, 97 YEARS OLD, DIES
Final rites for Mrs. Jane E. Pugh, 97, of Stratton, were conducted Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Stratton with the Rev. V. J. Lamm officiating. She passed away in Denver Wednesday, Oct. 18, attaining the age of 97 years, 2 months and 5 days. She had been a resident of Kit Carson County 75 years. Vocal selections, "The Old Rugged Cross," "It is Well" and "Close to Thee," were sung by a quartet composed of Oscar Smith, George Clark, Dorothy Smith and Marge Brown, and accompanied by Ida Boecker.
Burial was in the family plot in Fairview Cemetery in Burlington and the Hendricks Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Jane E. Pugh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Richards, was born at Columbus City, Iowa, Aug. 13, 1864, and departed this life in Denver, Oct. 18, 1961 at the age of 97 years, 2 months and 5 days.  On February 22, 1886, she was united in marriage to John J. Pugh of Springer, N. M. In that same year they came to what is now Kit Carson County to establish their pioneer home on a homestead, later moving to the Tuttle Ranch on the Republican River, 18 miles north of Stratton. Here they reared their family, Leona, Arthur, Mabel, Gladys, Lloyd, Luther, Clara and Helen, and experienced the joys and hardships of pioneer life. Four sons, Jay, Evan, Pryce and Kenneth, died in infancy. Mr. Pugh passed away on April 23, 1913, and another son, Arthur, died in 1936. Mrs. Pugh, one of the last of the early settlers, was a life long member of her church, a devoted wife and mother and a friend to all who knew her. She leaves to mourn her passing, 7 children, Mrs. Leona Stapp, Mrs. Mabel Guy, Mrs. Gladys Quinn, Lloyd Pugh, all of Stratton; R. L. Pugh of Pampa, Tex., Mrs. Clara Baker of Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. Helen Fuller of Denver; one daughter-in-law Mrs. Ruby Pugh of Port Hueneme, Calif.; 24 grandchildren, 60 great grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter and a host of relatives and friends. In addition to the extensive floral tribute, cash was given as a memorial to the Flat Rock Children's Home.

The pallbearers were her six grandsons, Laurence Pugh of Harrison, Ark., Richard Guy of Bethune, Robert Pugh and Gordon Flieger of Denver, David Guy of Stratton and William Pugh of Grand Junction.
Burial was in the family plot in Fairview Cemetery in Burlington and the Hendricks Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
Out of town relatives attending the funeral were Mrs. Leona Stapp, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Guy, Mr. and Mrs. George Quinn and Patricia, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Pugh, all of Stratton; Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Pugh of Pampa, Tex., Mrs. Charles Baker of Chicago, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Hoyte Fuller of Denver, Betty Jo Rehor of Lubbock, Tex., Mary Quinn of Colorado Springs, Leona and Margaret Chapman of Paonia, Joanne Wolf of Lamar, Roberta Kindred of Sidney, Neb., Jane Bandi, Barbara Flieger, Pauline Berver, all of Denver, and Tudor Thomas of Boulder.

Arthur L. Pugh married Ruby Ryun on November 24, 1910, recorded in Kit Carson County.

April 13, 1912 "A. J. Pugh and family bade good bye to Kit Carson County, Tuesday, and left for Harrison, Arkansas, with the expectation of making it their future home. Kit Carson County has been their home for twenty-three years. They were among the best, most substantial citizens, and consequently a loss to the community and it is with deep regret, that their many friends of Stratton and Burlington see them leave. It is hoped the change will bring health to Mrs. Pugh."

Ruby Pugh cash-claimed 40 acres in 4, 6S 45W in 1916.
In 1920 Kit Carson County, Arthur L. is 31, Ruby 27, Lawrence J. 8, Frances L. 7, Grace L. 6, Arthur L. 3 and John L. 1.

In 1930 Kit Carson County, Arthur is farming, 41, with Ruby 33 born in Nebraska. Lawrence 18, Ferances L. 17, Grace 15, Lewis 13, and John11 were all born in Colorado.

Ruby is widowed in 1940 Boulder, a maid, with Francis 27 a telephone operator, Grace 25 no occupation and John 21 no occupation.
Arthur 1888-1934 # 89639242 and Ruby Pugh 1892-1969 # 89639346 are buried in Burlington.
California death index has Ruby born Janaury 17, 1892, dying July 29, 1969 in Ventura County, mother Livingston.


Ruby Ryun was a waitress in 1910 Stratton, age 18 born in Nebraska, with hotel-keeper Amos 51 and Willamina 48 Ryum. Elmeda B 15 is a chambermaid, Grace 12, and Cecil L. 8 all born in Nebraska.
Amos and Willamina moved back to Iowa, and they're buried in Burlington, Iowa John # 102762788 1858-1943, Willamina 1860-1935. In 1920 Kit Carson County she's married to Arthur L. Pugh 31 born in Colorado, with Laurence J. 8, Frances L. 7, Grace L. 6, Arthur L. 3 and John L. 1.
Ruby is widowed in 1940 Boulder, a maid in a dormitory, Frances is a telephone operator - both were in Casper Wyoming in 1935. Grace is a nurse, and she was in COlorado Springs in 1935. John was in Kit Carson County in 1935.
Ruby 1892-1969 is buried in Burlington # 89639346, with Arthur 1888-1934.

In 1920 Denver Jane E. is widowed, with Gladys 23, Clara 16, Helen 14, and Richard L. 19. - none have occupations.
Lawrence J. Pugh married Helen Elizabeth Lewis June 22, 1938, recorded in Kit Carson County.

In 1940 Sterling, Colorado, Lawrence Pugh is adminstrator of a C.C.C. camp, 28, with Ellen 26 a teacher born in Iowa. They were in Kit Carson County in 1935.

Laurence J. Pugh LTC U.S. Army WWII - August 27, 1911 - November 20, 1994 is buried in Harrison Arkansas # 54761827.
So is Helen 1913-2003 # 54651826.


Lt. Col. John L. Pugh, U.S. Air Force 1918-1996 is buried in Mountain Home, Arkansas, # 80852700.


Frances Lucile Pugh, born Dec 5, 1912, died Oct 21, 2002, died as Frances Lee.
Possible son "On Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007, Larry Dennis Lee passed away. Larry was born Aug. 14, 1947, in Ventura to James and Frances Lee. He was a 32-year resident of Lake Tahoe and Truckee..."

Leona A. Pugh claimed a tract in section 14, 22, 23, and 26, 6S 46W in 1917.

In 1920 Louisa County, Iowa, Chancey Stapp is 30, born in Iowa, Leona A. 38 born in Colorado.

In 1930, still in Louisa County, Chancey is running a lumber yard, 40, Leona 43.

Chancey died in 1936, per one tree, and in 1940 Leona is in Stratton, Colorado, 53, widowed, with mother Jane E. Pugh 75 widowed, and Jane's brother William A. Richards 79 also widowed."
