Kit Carson County Pioneers:

Elias G. and Leah (Glass) Davis, 6 South 45 West

Leah Glass, age one, arrived in Philadelphia from Liverpool May 10, 1849 with John and Maria Glass.
In 1850 they're in Jackson County, Ohio, John 35, Hannah 36, Mary 12, Hannah 8, and Leah 2.
They're in Macon County, Missouri in 1870, Jno 55, Hannah 35?, Leah 22. John J. Davis, 14 is with them, born in Ohio.

Leah Glass Davis claimed two quarters in section 12, 6S 46W in 1919.

"Heirs of John Glass" claimed a quarter in sections 13 and 24, 6S 46W in 1893.

Danah wrote "The sod house picture of the lady in doorway are from near Kirk. The man with beard is John Glass."
John Glass 1812-1892 is buried in Burlington # 73803199.

Elias G. Davies married Leah E. Glass in Macon County, Missouri July 1, 1872. He was from Joliet Illinois, she was from Gladston, Missouri.
In 1880 Macon County, Missouri, Elias is 38, Leah 32, John G. 6., Elias G. 5, and Lewis G. nine months.

One post said "Anna Davis and family that was near Alma, Harlan County, Nebraska in the years around 1886. She had been a Glass before her marriage. Her sister Leah Glass Davis spent several months with Anna's family in 1886 on their way to a new homestead in Kit Carson County, Colorado.

Anna's mother and family in 1850 are in Bloomfield Twsp, Jackson County, Ohio. Hannah's husband may have been a Glass or a Davis. He died before 1860 and she married again to widower, John Glass (possibly her husband's brother). who already had a daughter, Margaret M. Glass. In the 1860 Census from Jackson Co.,Ohio, I have John Glass, Hannah, Hannah B,18, Leah E, 12, and Margaret M. 9. I am hoping the 1850 Census for Hannah will show her first husband and Anna and Paulla, older sisters of Hannah B. and Leah E.

Elias G. Davis was appointed the postmaster in Tuttle, then Elbert County, on November 9, 1888, and had it until May 1889, when Dolly M. Blackman took over. Elias was re-appointed in August 1896 and had it until 1901.


"The large sod house is of Elias G Davis and his wife Leah homestead. The older man in photo is her dad John Glass. John is one of the oldest graves in Burlington cemetery. I am told they moved to Colorado because their son Elias G. Davis, Jr. had asthma. The children in photo are their kids."


In 1900 Kit Carson County, Elias G. born Oct 1841 married 28 years to Leah G. August 1847, both born in Wales, have Morton H. Sept 1888 Colorado and Annie M. May 1890 COlorado.
In 1910 Kit Carson County, E.G. is 69, Leah 63, Morton 21, and Annie 19.
On the same page is Rosser B. Davis, single, 24, born in Nebraska.
Rosser B. Davis claimed two quarters in section 1, 6S 46W in 1917.

Elias 1841-1913 is buried in Burlington, # 73802889.

In 1920 Kit Carson County, Leah is 72, widowed, with son Rosser B. 33, born in Nebraska, a farmer.
In 1930 Stratton, Leah is 82 widowed, Wales, and John J. Davis a lodger born in Ohio, 72 is with her.
This doesn't match the "Roadside Guide to Colorado Pioneer Cemeteries" which says J. J. Davis is Leah's son.

In 1900 Kit Carson County, the brothers are living together, John G. April 1874 Missouri, Rosser B. April 1883 Nebraska, David E. July 1886 Missouri, and a lodger John J. Davis Nov 1857 Ohio is a lodgerRosser Beynon Davis, born April 16, 1886, registered for WWI with a Stratton address.
Rosser married Katherine Nowak.

Rosser 1886-1978 # 89258901 and Kathrine E. 1895-1967 # 89207284 are buried in Burlington.

Morton H. Davis cash-claimed 117 acres in 19, 6S 45W in 1914.
Elias G. Davis claimed a tract in sections 13 and 18, 6S 46W in 1899.

Elias G. Davis timber-claimed 153 acres in 19, 6S 45W in 1901. He had proved up 156 acres in 13, 4 and 18 in 1899, and cash-claimed 153 acres in 18 in 1891.

ELIAS, Jr.

Elias G. Davis Jr. was a candidate for Kit Carson County sheriff in 1912.

Elias G. Davis, Jr. claimed land in 2, 5S 46W, making final proof in 1906, witnesses Louis O. Moser, John J. Davis, John P. Ackelson, and William H. Ackelson, all of Kirk. Zelma Ackerman married Elias G. Davis, Jr., and they're in Kit Carson County in 1910, with William A. 6, Violet M. 5, and Susie 3. In 1920 Burlington, Elias is running a garage, and they've added Leah, 8.



In 1930 Burlington Elias is running a skating rink, and they have Leah with them. Violet has married Earl Ormsbee and they have newborn Donna C., also with Elias and Zelma. Zelma is widowed in 1940 Burlington, and Violet is teaching in the public schools - she says she's married but no Earl. She has Donna 10 and Bonnie 8. Earl 1905-1963 and Violet 1905-1975 are buried in Burlington Fairview.
JOHN
John G. Davis married Anna Homrighaus December 28, 1903, recorded in Yuma County.

In 1880 Ringgold County, Iowa, Louis "Homreglaus" and Amelia are both 32, born in Westphalia, with Emma 4, Anna 3, Amelia 2,a nd Lesa nine months.

Anna had been in Fort Collins in 1900, born April 1877 in Iowa, a servant in the Burton Aylesworth - president of a college - family.

November 30, 1906 John G. Davis cash-claimed 35 acres in 19, 6S 45W in 1912.


Amelia Homrighaus was in Idalia precinct in 1900, born April 1878 in Iowa, with parents Louis Sept 1848 and Amelia Feb 1848, both born in Germany. Charlie Jan 1881, Minnie Sep 1882, and Louis March 1884 were born in Iowa.
Louis and Amelia's grandson Earnest Vannida Feb 1897 born in Colorado is with them.
Earnest was also in the 1900 Denver census, with Christopher Vannida 38 and Emma 24.

Louis H. Homrighaus 1848-1917 is buried in Kirk # 28340909, with Amelia 1848-1911 # 54851758.

Emma Vannida is buried in Stratton 1876-1964 # 75528877, with Chris C. 1861-1953.


John Davis' witnesses in 1908 for his homestead were John F. Gleaves, Fielden Amy, george Burkard and James A. Pratt, all of Kirk.

He also claimed land in 13, 6S 46W in 1904.

In 1908 John Glass Davis, Fielding W. Amy, Jeremiah Hutton, and James A. Pratt were witnesses for the claim of George Burkard for land in 21, 5S 46W. All had Kirk addresses.

In 1910 John is farming in Yuma County, now married three years to Amelia 32 born in Iowa. They have Louis 2, Colorado.

Next household is David E. Davis 26 born in Missouri, with Jenny 27 born in Nebraska, and Edith V. 1.

November 1911 "Sheriff Griff Davis of Burlington and his father and mother were guests of John G. Davis on Thanksgiving Day. "

January 30, 1913 "F. W. Amy and John Davis attended the Stock Show at Denver the past week."

John G. Davis 1873-1930 # 28340970, Anna Davis 1877-1904 # 28340941, and Amelia Davis 1878-1948 # 28340957 are buried in Kirk, next to Louis and Amelia E. Homrighaus, parents of Amelia and Anna.

DAVID
David Edmunds "Ed" Davis married Jennie E. Jones April 26, 1908, recorded in Lincoln County.

1910 Yuma County, David E. Davis 26 born in Missouri, with Jenny 27 born in Nebraska, and Edith V. 1.
In 1920 (on the same page as brother Elias) David is running a garage in Burlington, with Jennie 35, Edith 10, Robert 7, and David 2. They have five lodgers.
They have a garage in 1930 Stratton, with Robert G. 17, David E. 13, and Earl J. 7.
In 1940 Stratton, David is 56, Jennie 57, David E. Jr. 23, Earl J. 17 and lodger John J. ,Davis, 82 born in Ohio.

David 1883-1967 is buried in Burlington # 89204710, and so is Jennie E. 1883-1967 # 89207197.

November 23, 1967 "Mrs. Jennie (Ed) Davis of Stratton passed away at the Burlington hospital Friday evening. The funeral services will be held on Wednesday morning at the EUB church in Stratton at 10 a.m.. Mrs. Davis is a pioneer resident of this (Kirk) neighborhood.

Morton Harrison Davis married Elizabeth Louise Powell June 27, 1917, in Kit Carson County.|
Also in 1917, Morton claimed a quarter in sections 25 and 26, 6S 46W.
In 1922 he claimed another quarter in sections 23 and 26, 6S 46W.

Also in 1922, Elizabeth Davis -formerly Elizabeth Powell, claimed a quarter in 27, 34, and 35, 6S 46W.

In 1920 Kit Carson County, Morton is 31, married to Elizabeth 29 born in England, immigrating in 1912. They have Deverly M. seven months.
In 1930 and 1940 Kit Carson County, there's just the three of them.
Beverly Mayfanwy Davis, born May 20, 1919, married Fred Peter Geis, and died April 15, 2007 in Springfield, Missouri.

Morton 1888-1979 # 89258534 and Elizabeth 1889-1949 # 89206947 are buried in Burlington

Fred's father is probably John Frederick Geis, who proved up a quarter in 12N 43W i- Sedgwick County, Colorado, in 1917.

Fred P. Geis 1914-2009 is buried in Buffalo, Missouri # 48075887, with Beverly M. 1919-2007 # 48075904.

Morton was in Kit Carson County in 1900, born Sept 1888 in Colorado, with parents Elias G. Davis Oct 1841 and Leah G. August 1847, both born in Wales. Annie M. May 1890 was born in Colorado.
He registered for WWI with a Stratton address, born Sept 23, 1888 at Tuttle Colorado, supporting his mother, single.

John Owen Geis, 72, of Julesburg, CO passed away Friday, November 14, 2014 in Julesburg. Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 19th, at Austin-Tennant Funeral Home at 10:30am, burial followed at the Ovid Cemetery.

John was born January 7, 1942, the eldest of six siblings to Fred Peter and Beverly (Davis) Geis in Ovid, Colorado. John lived most of his childhood in Ovid. He had also lived on a ranch in Holyoke and started elementary school at Red Feather Lake in Fort Collins. He soon moved back to Ovid where he played basketball, track, and football for the Ovid Red Devils. He was on the 1956 Bean Bowl State Championship football team. He also participated in band, chorus, drama, and Boy’s State. John graduated from Ovid High School in 1960.

John joined the Marine Corps and served for four years. Having been stationed in Camp Pendleton, Bainbridge Maryland, and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, he also served off the coast of Cuba during the Bay of Pigs. While stationed in Maryland, John was selected to attend the Naval Academy. After being honorably discharged in 1964, he worked on his father’s farm in Buffalo, Missouri.

In 1965 John moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance. John went back to Buffalo in 1967 to help on the farm until his father sold it later that same year. When the farm was sold he moved to Atlanta, Georgia where he managed at Davis Brothers Cafeteria. This is where he met his soul mate, Gwen Sayer, who he married in 1968. Shortly after being married they moved to Dallas, Texas, where their only child Joni Geis was born. The Family moved back to Ovid in 1970. John soon opened up his plumbing and heating company. John stayed in Sedgwick County running his business until his passing in 2014.

John enjoyed golf, fishing, reading, and playing with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Gwen of Julesburg, daughter Joni and husband Jeff, and two grandchildren, Samantha and Jordan Wegman of New Braunfels, Texas.

Lewis Glass Davis registered for WWI with an address of Kirk, Colorado, born August 12, 1879, farming, with Minnie A. Davis.
Lewis 40 and Minnie 32 are in Kirk precinct in 1920, with Edgar 7.

Lewis claimed 80 acres in section 25, 6S 46W in 1920.

In 1930 Yuma County Lewis 50 born in Missouri, is farming, with Minnie G. 43, Kansas, Edgar L. 17 Colorado, and adopted daughter Roberta 8, Colorado.
Minnie and Lewis are alone in 1940 Yuma County, Kirk precinct.
Minnie born Feb 18, 1886 died October 1984.
Roberta Davis was born January 23, 1919 to Lewis G. Davis and Minnie A. Homm, dying June 6, 2002. In 1953 she was Roberta Oglesbee, in 1986 Kammerzell, and Ellison in 2002.

Edgar Davis married Ilda Crawford January 12, 1935, recorded in Yuma County.
Edgar Davis was farming in Yuma County in 1940, 27, married to Ilda C. Davis 26.
He's buried in Kirk 1912-1976, with Ilda 1914-2006, # 67354397.
