Teller County Colorado History

Archive Projects CoGenWeb

There are a number of archive projects underway. You may find clues at some of these links. Check often for new data.

Books about the area

Teller County, especially the Cripple Creek Gold Mining District has a rich well documented history and there have been many books published about the area. Many are still available for purchase in the local area and some are available via the Internet and other book sellers.

Cemeteries List

There are two cemeteries in the Mining district and four outside the mining district. Map locations of these cemeteries can be obtained using the instructions found on the Cemetery Page.

Census Project

Vounteers are transcribing the census records so they can be accessed via the Internet.

Census project home page gives information on how you can volunteer to assist the worthwhile activity.

City Directories

Before it was common for telephones to be in homes these city directories served like the telephone books of today. The Pikes Peak Genealogical Society now has for sale a CD-ROM with copies of all the Teller County and El Paso County cemetery transcriptions as well as additional Teller County death registers for $10. For more information email Linda Vixie at lvixie@comcast.net.

Geographic Locations

If you want to find a place on a map, use the GNIS database. You can locate Mines, Towns, Cemeteries, and geologic items even if they no longer exist. The search page will open in a new browser window.

Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) Form used to query Names – Location database. Enter the Name of the place in Feature Name field Select Colorado for the State or Territory Name (drop down) field. Enter Teller in the County Name field. Select the appropriate value for the Feature Type field. For example: select Populated Place for a city or town, or select Cemetery, or Mine for those features. If you leave the Feature Name blank you will get a listing of all Features of the requested type in the County. The result of the query will include basic information and a links to Maps and in some cases aerial or satellite photographs.

Non-governmental sources that contain historical materials that might be useful in genealogical research do exist and can be a wonderful Gold Mine of information.

The existing local governmental entities often have historical records. Teller County government is where you need to get photocopies of Birth, Marriage and Death certificates.

Newspapers List

There were many newspapers in Teller County that like their host towns no longer exist. There are some still available on microfilm. See the list. Most of the papers were in the mining district.

Obituaries

Archived Obituaries for Teller County and a list of names indexed at the Ute Pass Historical Society.

School Records

School records can give insight into family happenings. For example, I noted a teacher's entry in one girl's record about a death in the family and that the child was living with an Aunt when her grades lowered and her attitude changed.

The family historian must master the art of storytelling. What, after all, is truth without anecdote, history without events, explanation without narration--or yet life itself without a story? Stories are not just the wells from which we drink most deeply but at the same time the golden threads that hold and bind--Ariadne's precious string that leads us through the labyrinth that connects living present and the living past.
