ODA'S FAMILY
In 1930 Vernon precinct, Homer Stuteville is 53, Josie M. Stuteville 44,
Oda L. Stuteville 23, Laveda Stuteville 19,
Dwight Stuteville 16, and Helen Stuteville 3.
1938 "Word was received here on Monday, soon after the parents had been notified,
of a change for the worse in the condition of Mr. Gerald Stuteville,
that he had passed away about 7 o'clock Monday evening. Mr. Stuteville had undergone an
operation for appendicitis at the hospital on the Friday before and had been recovering
in a satisfactory manner until Monday afternoon. A sudden change in his condition brought
about his death within a few hours. Mr. Stuteville is well known in the Vernon community
where he had previously farmed. Since leaving here he has been in the western states with
his family, but returned here not long ago and, he,
with his family of three small children had been living with his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Homer Stuteville of southwest of Vernon. Oral Gerald Stuteville was born
October 30, 1909 near near Vernon, Colorado and departed this life at Denver, Colorado,
January 31, 1938 at the age of 29 years, 3 months and 1 day.
He spent his entire life in the Vernon Community excepting just a little more than a year
at Kimberly, Idaho. He spent his life on the farm and was an outstanding young man of his
community. Greatly respected by all whom he met.
He was united in marriage to Jessie Allison of Vernon, May 18, 1929.
To this union were born three children, Geralding, Betty Jean, and James Merril.
He also leaves to mourn his passing, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Stuteville,
one brother, Dwight Stuteville of Vernon, and four sisters, Mrs. Henry Emel of Yuma,
Mrs. Lloyd Downing of Loveland, Mrs. Ivan Hoaglen of Vernon and Helen Stuteville of Vernon.
Also a host of less near relatives and acquaintances."
Homer Stuteville, a resident of the Vernon and Wray communities since 1903 and a well known farmer
and respected citizen, died Friday, January 26, 1951 after a prolonged illness.
Funeral services for Mr. Stuteville were held at the Christian church Sunday afternoon,
conducted by Rev. Robert Seals and Rev. K. Orlando Lee. Interment was at Glendale cemetery at Vernon.
Mr. Stuteville was a son of George and Mary Stuteville and was born on December 21, 1876,
near Lineville, Iowa. When he was still an infant the family moved to near Pleasanton, Iowa,
where he grew to manhood. He was baptized into the Baptist church in 1900, and while in Wray
had been active in the Christian church.
On February 2, 1902, he was united in marriage to Jose Eastin at Pleasanton. To them six children
were bom. In 1903 the family moved to a farm southwest of Vernon. He farmed there,
and near Vernon, until about nine years ago when the family moved to Wray to make their home.
Mr. Stuteville;s health began to fail a short time ago.
Surviving him are his wife, Jose; four daughters, Mrs. Inez Emel of Colorado Springs,
Mrs. Oda Downing of Denver, Mrs. LaVeta Hoaglen of Wray, and Mrs. Helen Jones of St. Francis, Kan.;
one son Dwight Stuteville of Wray; fifteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
One son died as a young man. Other near relatives are a brother, Merritt Stuteville of David City,
Iowa, and a sister, Mrs. Mollie Hobbs of Los Angeles."
LLOYD AND DORIS
Doris is buried in Vernon 1898-1930 # 80178389. "Doris Leota Wheeler was born October 10, 1898 at Barnard, Kansas, and passed away February 17, 1930 at Wray, Colorado, at the age of thirty-one years, four months, and seven days.
She lived with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. N. Wheeler at Barnard, Kansas, where she grew to womanhood. She graduated from Barnard, Kans., high school in 1916 and taught school near Barnard the following winter, coming to Vernon, Colorado, the following spring. On July 11, 1917 she was united in marriage to Lloyd E. Downing at Wray, Colorado. To this union were born four children, Lloyd Thaine, Mary Louise, Thelma Leota and baby Iris Arlene.
She leaves to mourn her departure, besides her sorrowing husband and four children, her aged father, P. N. Wheeler, Vernon, Colo., one brother, Howard Wheeler of Seattle, Wash., and five sisters, Mrs. Arthur James of Kit Carson, Colo., Mrs. Max Ross of Vernon, Colo., Mrs. Horace Whomble of Colby, Kans, Corrinne and Cleora Wheeler of Vernon .also one half-brother Floyd Wheeler of Denver ,and three half-sisters, Mrs. J. E. Downing of Vernon, Colo., Mrs. R. L. Blanding and Mrs. W. E. Murphy of Barnard, Kans. Also her grandfather H. D. Tebow of Jamestown, Kans., and a host of friends and relatives, who will miss her from their midst. She was preceded in death by her mother and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held this afternoon at the Methodist church in Vernon with Rev. Fred Blanding in charge. The remains will be laid to rest in Glendale cemetery."

1935 "Lloyd Downing, who resides on the Chas. Sweazy farm a few miles south of Vernon held a public sale Tuesday and disposed of his livestock and other farm property. Mr. Downing had a very good offering of farm property. The terms of the sale were cash."

1948 "Mr. and Mrs. Ed Downing returned home Saturday after spending a couple of weeks in the Lloyd Downing home in Denver. Lloyd suffered an operation and was seriously ill but is now doing satisfactorily."
Lloyd is buried in Vernon 1891-1950 # 80178472. "Funeral services were held at the Lockwood Mortuary in Wray at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon for Lloyd E. Downing, 59, a former resident of this community, who died August 3 in Denver following a two year illness. He was buried in Glendale cemetery. The rites were conducted by Rev. Ralph Hines.
Mr. Downing was born at Scandia, Kansas, on May 15, 1891. He came to this community in 1910 and made his home here for several years. He was married here to Oda Stuteville of Vernon and the couple lived near Vernon a few years before moving to Loveland in 1935.
For the past seven years, the family has lived in Denver where Mr. Downing was employed by the
Burlington Railroad. Three children were born to the couple, Carol, Duane and Gary, who
survive their father.
Mr. Downing is also survived by four children from a previous marriage.
They are Thaine Downing, Mrs. Louise Norton, Mrs. Thelma Thornburg and Mrs. Iris Carson."
Oda Downing, born 22 Apr 1906, died in January 1987,

IRIS
"James Canova Akey, a resident of this area for most of his life, died at the Memorial
hospital in Colorado Springs Sunday, May 21, 1961, at the age of 77 years, three months and four days.
He was a son of Frank and Tressie Akey and was born at New Havenm Indiana, on February 17, 1884.
He came to Colorado in 1887 and lived most of his life in the Vernon and Wray communities.
In 1906 he was married to Carrie Belle Slick and to them were born two children,
Helen Wetherington and Melvin Akey. Mrs. Belle Akey died in 1931. In 1936. Mr. Akey married
Amanda Downing and they provided a home for Iris Downing Carson. Mrs. Amanda Akey died in 1942,
and in 1947 Mr. Akey was married to Margaret Garder of Colorado Springs.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, and one brother A C. Akey of Bozeman
Montana.
Surviving him are his wife. Margaret, of Manitou Springs, a daughter, Helen Wetherington,
and a son, Melvin Akey, both of Vernon: five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren:
one halfbrother. Harold Akey of Tahoe, Calif.: three half-sisters Myrtle Akey of
South Bend, Indiana, Mildred Acker of Ft. Wayne, and Effie May Reid of Los Angeles. Calif.
: his foster daughter, Iris Carson of Tucson. Ariz and many other relatives. Mr. Akey farmed and ranched In the Vernon community until about two years ago when his health forced him 1o retire. The funeral service was held at the Lockwood Mortuary In Wray Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock with the Rev. Claude Schuler officiating Interment was at Grandview cemetery.

1956 "Pvt. Leland D. Downing, whose mother, Mrs. Oda Downing, resides at 3933 Tejon St., Denver,
has recently been assigned to the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team, Fort Campbell, Kentucky,
for Advanced Military training. A former student at Vernon high school, he volunteered for
parachute training, but will be required to undergo advanced individual training prior to
becoming a paratrooper. Upon completion of the eight-week course he will graduate to
Airborne Training where he will be taught the techniques of making a parachute jump."
