"Tintype, believed to be dated 1857, Electa (Lectie) Faulkner McColrey (c.1806-1888?) and Stephen Nichols (c.1799-1857), both second marriages.
They were married in 1839 or 1840.
They are the mother and step-father of my great, great grandfather, Orrien McColrey/McColery (1833-1916)."

Her name at that time was Hannah Anna (Mart) Bronson.

After his civil war service for 18 years, Mr. McColrey followed the business of mining and hauled coal from an area near his home at Monica, Peoria County, Illinois down (about 18 miles) to Peoria City, Peoria County, Illinois.
Later, in Monica, he owned his own shop as a wagon maker where he did a good business. He also owned his own dwelling in Monica.



Then later in 1880, the Orrien McColrey first moved to Hollenberg, Kansas where his family is listed in the 1880 census, and then later the family moved to Beatrice, Nebraska.



Clinton Bronson's father was Red Bronson, based on verbal history.

It was said that Red Bronson went to Oklahoma to fight in the Indian Wars where he was killed, based on verbal history, but I have no independent evidence of this verbal history.
Hannah had two more marriages: the third marriage to my great, great grandfather: Orrien McColrey/McColery."


In 1880 Washington County, Kansas, O. "McCorery" is a wagon maker, 45 born in New York, with Hannah 30 Ohio, Clinton 13 Ohio, Henrietta 11 Missouri, Hattie 10, Evaline 8, Frank 7, Lenora 2, and Charles eleven months. The last four kids were born in Illinois.

In 1880 Washington County, Kansas, O. McColery is a wagon maker, 45, born in New York, with Hannah 30 Ohio , Clinton 13 Ohio, Henrietta 11 Missouri, Hattie 10, Evaline 8, Frank 7, Lenora 2, and Charles eleven months. – the last four kids born in Illinois. In 1885 Gage County Orrien McColrey is a teamster 53, Hannah 34, George 29, Clinton 18, Etta 16, Hattie 15, and Evaline 11. Nora is 8, Charles 6, Donald 3, and Mary 2.

Charley, 25, born in Illinois, married Clara Smith 21 born in Nebraska, on September 10, 1904 in Beatrice, Nebraska.
September 14, 1904

1909 Beatrice, Nebraska " A barn on the premises of Charles McColery in South Beatrice, was destroyed Wednesday night, with a large amount of grain and hay. Two horses perished in the flames. Mr. McColery places his loss at about ?!H)0 with $700 insurance."

Charley McColery registered for WWI in Beatrice, a real estate agent, wife Clara. He was born June 17, 1879.

Clara died in 1918, and is buried in Beatrice.


Charles died in 1922 in Yuma County, and is also buried in Beatrice.

" Both Judges Pemberton aud Raper presided at brief sessions of the district court yesterday afternoon. Belle McColery's petition for an order restraining Frank McColery from removing their child, who is in the custody of his father, from the jurisdiction of the court, came up and Judge Pemberton issued a temporary restraining order on the defendant and required that the plaintiff, Belle McColery, furnish a bond for a hundred dollars. charges her husband with extreme cruelty and infidelity. She asks that she be permitted to visit with their child, and that F'rank McColery he restrained from taking the child outside the jurisdiction of the court. "

Frank is a cement worker in 1930 Beatrice, 56, with Eunice 34 Nebraska. Ernest 18, was born in Nebraska. Merle Spence 17 was born in Nebraska, widowed. Charles 11, Hazel 11 in Nebraska, Evelyn 6 in Colorado, and grandson Homer 1 in Nebraska.

Evelyn Louise McColery was born Nov 26, 1923 at Eckley to Frank McColery and Eunice I. Edwards, as Towle in 1953, Regan in 1964, and as Bass in 1994. She died Sept 22, 2003. Hazel Mary Bass, born in Nebraska Feb 5, 1920, father McColery, mother Edwards, died March 18, 1984 in San Diego County. She's buried there # 51216583.


DONALD

Mina Howes was born July 29, 1884 in Whiteside County, Illinois – father J.L. Howes. She died in St. Lukes Hospital, Kansas City, residence of Leawood, Johnson County, Kansas. Informant was Mrs. Lenore Henderson of the same address in Leawood.
In 1880 Henry County, Illinois, Phoebe J. Lewis is 20, Eva M. 17, Samuel I. 14, Hattie B. 10 Parents Samuel 57 and Margaret M. 51.

Phebe Jane Lewis married Frank L. Howes in Henry County, Illinois on January 18, 1881.

In 1895 Smith County, Kansas, Willie Howes 11, Mina 9, and May 7 are living with Samuel 72 and Margaret 64 Lewis

In 1900 Beatrice, Jane Howes is widowed, a washerwoman, born Oct 1860 in Illinois. Elmer drives an oil wagon, born Oct 1881 and William a butcher Feb 1883 and Elmina July 1824 were born in Illinois, May L. Dec 1886 in Minnesota

P. Jane Howes married George S. Gaston on April 9, 1906 in Lincoln. He was born in 1880, twenty years younger than Jane.

# 70098824 says Jane B. (Stephens) Gaston is buried in Wyuka.

In 1900 Beatrice Nebraska, Jane Howes is widowed, born Oct 1860 in Illinois, with Elmer Oct 1881 William Feb 1883, and Elmina July 1884 in Illinois, Mary L. Dec 1886 in Minnesota.
1899 Beatrice "Don McColery and family returned home from a trip of several weeks in Colorado."

1909 "Articles of incorporation of the Beatrice Brick works have been filed with the county clerk. The company incorporates with it capital stock S40.000 and will manufacture all kinds of brlcks, paving blocks, cement blocks, tiling and other products manufactured from clay, cement and sand. The incorporators are Robert Klose, II. Hepperlin, Don McColery and W. Farlow.

The City of Beatrice was able to acquire the Interstate Chautauqua grounds and recreate it as a beautiful park for the community. In 1919 Dr. Harry Hepperlin and Don McColery purchased the grounds west of the park to enable its expansion to Highway 77.

Henry Workman, plaintiff, was employed as a carpenter to assist in doing repair and alteration work for the F. W. Woolworth Company store in Beatrice. On May 28th, 1918, he suffered the loss of part of his middle finger when it was caught under a box of plate glass being unloaded on the sidewalk. Because the Woolworth Company had employed Don McColery to supervise the work on a "Cost plus" arrangement, it sought to shift liability for compensation on McColery and Alex Smith, the drayman who hauled the glass from the depot to the store. The superintendent of construction of the Woolworth Company, directed the work, authorized the payment of price and one-half over time wages on week days and double price wages for Decoration Day. The Commissioner held the F. W. Woolworth Company, a Corporation, liable for compensation in this case allowing plaintiff $12.00 each week for fifteen weeks, medical expense and 50 per cent penalty for delayed payments. Appealed to District Court.
In 1910 Beatrice, "David McColory" is 27, managing a brick factory, with Elmina 25, Gale 6, Lenora 4, and Donalad 2.
He registered for WWI in Beatrice, self-employed in bridge construction, with Eva Elmina and 1207 S. 6th in Beatrice.

In 1920 Gage County, Donald is 37, Eva 35, Gale M. 15, Lenora M. 14, and Donald L. 12.
In 1930 Yuma County, Don is farming, 48, with Elmina 48 born in Illinois, and Donald 22 born in Nebraska.
Don 58 and Eva 55 are alone in 1940 Yuma County, farming.

Don registered for WWII in Eckley, born Feb 22 1882 at Beatrice Nebraska.

Eva Elmina (Howes) McColery 1884-1963 is buried in Wheat Ridge # 125388115 "died in Kansas City. Wife of Donald McColery"

In 1930 Eckley precinct, Gale McColrey is an auto mechanic, 26, born in Nebraska, with Velma 20 Missouri and Bonnie Jean 1 born in Colorado.

In 1948 Bill McColery graduated from the Eckley High School. Receiving diplomas at Wray were Bill, Dedpha Coffman, Francine hall, Shirley McCalla, Bob Pariset an Dean Pollard.

Bonnie Jean Robison, 88 passed away at her home in Manhattan, Kansas on December 24, 2016. She was born on October 11, 1928 in Eckley, CO. She is survived by four children, David Don Robison, James Martin Robison, John Franklin Robison and Jana Marie Maestas, eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Owen Robison, Dixie Snow, Bill McColery, Bob McColery.

Lenore McColery is a nurse in 1940 Denver, 34, living alone.

Lenore Mae Ledingham, born Dec 11, 1905 in Nebraska, died January 14, 1981 in Santa Clara County, California.

Donald Lewis McColery married Lelia Ethel Stenson in Fort Morgan, Colorado on May 18, 1933.



In 1940 Eckley precinct, Donald McColery is 32, born in Nebraska, farming, with Leila E. 28 born in Kansas.

1942 Eckley "Miss Lenore McColery drove down from Denver Saturday to visit her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Don McColery. Mr. and Mrs. Donnie McColery and Kenneth Arnold were also at the McColery home Sunday."

1944 "Dwight Arnold, a nephew of Mrs. Donnie McColery, who had been here at the McColery home for several months, went to Redwood City, Cal., Wednesday morning, where he will make his home with his father. "

April 1949 "Mr. and Mrs. James Toner entertained a large group of neighbors and friends at a covered dish supper and party Friday night honoring Donnie and Leila McColery who are leaving our community."

July 1949 "Mr and Mrs. Donnie McColery, Jr., of Loveland visited Monday night and Tuesday with Mr. and Mrs. Glen Rockwell and family."

February 1950 "D. L. McColery, Jr., of Loveland was transacting business here Monday, Donnie is now district representative of the Archer Oil Co. of Omaha and is moving from Loveland to Ft. Morgan."

1950 Eckley "Donnie and Leila McColery of Fort Morgan spent a couple of days here the latter part of the week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Rockwell.

1972 Eckley "Mr. and Mrs. Don McColery of Los Gatos, California visited last Sunday and Monday with the Jesse Watsons; then with the Jack Wakefields on Tuesday and Wednesday."

In 1985 Leila McColery of Sunnydale, California and Jessie Surdez of Cupertino, California attended the 50th wedding anniversary of Jack and Geneva Wakefiled in Wray.

Donald L. McColery, born 3 Jan 1908 in Nebraska, died 11 Oct 1980 in Santa Clara County, Mother's Maiden Name: Howes.

Leila McColery born Dec 10, 1911, died April 24, 2000, last residence Sunnyvale, Santa Clara County, California.

" Mrs. Jane B. Gaston, 74, died at the home, at 2:50 p. m. Monday. Surviving are her husband, George: two stepsons. Elmer House of Yakima. Wash., and William House of Kansas City, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Mina McColery of Eckley, Colo., and Mrs. May Underdown of Loveland. Colo.; a brother. John Lewis of Sunnyside, Wash ; and a sister, Mrs. Robert Bennington of Smith Center, Kansas. The body is at Umbergers. where funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday. Rev. W. E'. Perry In charge Helen Goldstein will sing accompanied by Mrs. Lars Rasmussen. Burial in Wyuka."

LINNIE

Earnest Crosby, 22, son of Daniel and Allie Crosby, married Linnie McColery in Beatrice Nebraska Dec 25, 1903.

They're in Beatrice in 1910, and in Eckley in 1930. In 1940 in Eckley Ernest is farming, 58, Lennie 54.
Ernest's mother Etta likely married John Whalen in 1887, and is buried in Gage County 1864-1931 # 133557151.

April 1941 "Sunday dinner guests at the Louis Foster home were Ralph Shively and family and Mr. and Mrs. Rip Crosby. "

Ernest 1881-1953 and Linnie 1885-1941, # 52879548, are buried in Eckley.

"Mrs. E. E. Crosby suffered a stroke of paralysis last Saturday about 12:30 and was taken to the Wray hospital where she died a short time later. Her death came as a great shock to her husband, relatives and her many friends as she had been in her usual health that morning and had performed her usual household duties. She complained of her arm being numb when her husband came in from the field, and a short time later became unconscious. Funeral services were held at the Eckley Community church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock by the pastor. Rev. M. L Lathan. and interment was made in the Eckley cemetery.
Lennie McColery Crosby was born on a farm near Adams, Nebraska, on December 25. 1685, and departed this life November 22, 1941, at the age of 55 years. 10 months and 28 days. She spent her early childhood in Madison. Nebraska, and at the age of thirteen years she with her parents and brothers and sisters moved to Beatrice. Nebraska. She was married to Ernest Eugene Crosby on December 25, 1903, at Beatrice, Nebraska. where they resided until coming to Eckley, Colorado, in 1920 where she resided until death. Her mother and father, four brothers and one sister preceded her to the life beyond. Beside her husband she leaves to mourn their loss -three sisters, Mrs. Eva Purcell, of Omaha, Nebraska. Mrs. Lenora Jackson, of Thousand Oaks, California, Mrs. Mary E. Howe, of Seattle. Washington, two brothers - C. B. Bronson, of Mitchell, Nebraska, and Donald, of Eckley, Colorado, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends."

"Several Corrections to Obituary: She was the daughter of Orrien McColery by a previous marriage, and the step daughter of Mrs. Hannah McColery, Orrien's wife.
It is believed she was no longer with her husband, Mr. Dawson, at time of her death.
Her daughter was Miss Mabel Kurtz, and there was also one step daughter, I believe.
She was not buried at Evergreen Home Cemetery in Beatrice, Nebraska, but at Scott Street Cemetery also in Beatrice, Nebraska under her maiden name: Etta McColery with the word Mother on the small cemetery monument, which is adjacent to a much smaller stone for two baby brothers (died as babies): Warren McColrey and Chester McColrey."
