Koene Vrieze and Lammerdina Weers had 9 children and 6 daughters stayed
alive. Three of them went to the USA. Engeltje in 1880, Harmke in 1892 and
Ettie in 1903. Reinderdina, Swaantje and Antje (my great grandmother) stayed
in The Netherlands.
Engeltje was married to Zens Roelfsema and they lived in Lakota, Iowa.
Harmke was married to Jacob Ruben, her name was changed in Minnie Ruben
and they lived in Montrose, Colorado.
How are you doing? Hope
everything is all right. We
have moved to an apartment in
the center of Dronten and it is
very nice. The shops are close
and we see everything thats
going on in town. I got a new
picture of Zens Roelfsema. He
has been in the Salvation Army
in Chicago. Here is the picture
of
1929.
Iowa - Tuesday, November 12,
1929 occurred the burial of on
of the oldest settlers (Mr. Zens
Roelfsema) late of Chicago. Mr.
Roelfsema spent a goodly portion
of the most active part of his
life in the vicinity of Lakota,
where he reared a large family,
the living of which still reside
in Kossuth county with the
exception of George, who resides
in Philadelphia. For the past
several years Mr. Roelfsema was
resided in Chicago. Soon after
going to that city he became
impressed with the necessity of
work among the poor. He
consequently joined in the work
of the Samaritan Army to
which work he devoted a large
part of his time. By his efforts
along that line, his zeal for
his work was recognized. He held
the title of Major at the time
of his death. He was second in
authority in Chicago. Assistant
attorney of Illinois, Mr. Dewitt
who was a personal friend of Mr.
Roelfsema’s, said of him in
part- „There is not a man
in Chicago who will be more
missed by the poor than he. He
always kept hot coffee and lunch
in the rear of his little store
which he operated, and fed and
warmed every needy person who
came along.”
He told further of his care of a
homeless boy with whom he shared
his bed besides feeding him for
seven weeks of winter weather.
The gratitude of the boy was
such that when he heard of Mr.
Roelfsema’s illness he went to
the hospital where he was being
cared for, and asked to see the
Major, but was refused on the
ground that the ward was under
quarantine for small pox. The
boy insisted on taking the
chance, but was refused. Not
being daunted by his reversals,
he found the location of his
room, climbed seven stories up a
fire escape, crawled through a
window, and wept at the bedside
of his dying benefactor. "He
serves God well who serves his
creatures."
Albert and Ettie (Ettje) Kolk (born Vrieze) came to the USA in February 1903. They first went
to Gezinus "Zens" and Engeltje Roelfsema (born Vrieze) in
Germania (later Lakota), Iowa.
In 1910 and 1920 Albert and Ettie are in Johnson County.
1910 kids are Dena 9, Marie 8, Girtie 6, Carrie 4, Jonnie 2, and George 0.
Census said he was German, and did "odd jobs"
Albert registered for WWI in Sterling, Johnson County, Nebraska, saying he was
born September 10, 1876 in Holland, and was a laborer.
1920 Albert and "Annie" have Gertie 16, Carrie 13, John 12, George
9, Annie (Angie?) 7, Margaret 5, Conrad 2 and Edith two months old. (this
must be Ida)
In the 1924 Lincoln, Nebraska directory are Albert and Etta Kolk, at 2745 S.
48th. Albert is a farmer. Carrie Kolk also lives at that address.
In 1930 Albert J. Kolk is a shoemaker in Eckley. "Addie" and he
have John A., 22 a farm laborer, George E. 20 a farm laborer, Margaret E. 14,
Conrad E. 12, and Ida 10. All the kids were born in Nebraska.
Jim Brophy said "Connie Kolk was a good baseball pitcher. He was
on one of the Eckley teams that came out to play us. Connie was the same
age as my brother Paul."
In 1940 Eckley "Hatten" Kolk is widowed, with only Conrad, 21, with no
occupation. The census says they rented a house at "end of Block 2 in
South Eckley"
Jim Brophy said that Mrs. Kolk ran the cafe in the hotel for a while.
Ettje, Albert and their daughters, Lammerdina and Maria left the Netherlands
and traveled from Antwerp to the US on "The Finland" during March 1903. They
were traveling to meet Gezinus Roelfsema in Germania, Kossuth County, Iowa.
Gezinus was married to Harmke, Vrieze Ettje's sister. Harmke came to the Belmond,
Iowa area in 1892.
The name of the Germania was changed to Lakota in 1918 due to anti-German
sentiment during World War I.
Ettie is a daughter of Koene Vrieze and Lammerdina Weers and they first lived in Vriescheloo
in the province Groningen in the Netherlands.
Do you know if there are still Kolk
relatives living close to Eckley, Colorado?
Albert and Ettie are buried on the cemetery just outside of Eckley, Colorado

I am a descendent of Lammerdina Weerts and Koene
Vrieze. They had 6 daughters. Three of them went to
Lakota/Belmond in Iowa. Lammerdina came to the USA in
1903 with her daughter Ettje and her son in law Albert
Kolk. Lammerdina died in 1906 somewhere in the USA. I
try to find descendents of the 3 daughters who went to
the USA. Up til now I only found descendents of the
oldest daughter Engeltje Vrieze who was married to Zens
Roelfsema. . Hope to hear
from you
Sincerely, Koene
First you see a picture of Geert, Okko and Jacob Korte in the Dutch Army.
The other is a family picture of Okko Korte with daughter Frouktje Korte, Wife Anna Wilts and daughter Swaantje Korte. Swaantje who passed away last year was a granddaughter of Garrelt Korte and Swaantje Vrieze.
Some sad news. I found out that Swaantje Korte passed away last year on August 14, 2012. I have visited her often in Utrecht where she lived with her husband Marinus de Pijper. Here are a few pictures of them.
Reinderdina Vrieze, a sister of Ettie Kolk of Eckley, Colorado, was born March 2, 1871 in Vriescheloo, municipality Bellingwolde, daughter of Koene Vrieze and Lammerdina Weers. On May 20, 1899 in Wedde she married Hindrik Mulder, son of Jan Mulder and Trientje Ottjes, born May 4, 1868 in Wedde. Hindrik Mulder was 31 years old in 1899 and living in Maarseveen, municipality Gorinchem. He was a customs officer there. Hindrik had a brother named Jan Mulder and he was a customs officer in Bellingwolde. In 1899 Reinderdina was 28 years old and living in Wedde. Reinderdina and Hindrik were living in Maarseveen and probably had three children. Koene, Tine and Lammerdina Reina. Lammerdina Reina was Born in June 1902 and passed away on August 14, 1902. Koene was born round 1904. He passed away before his parents on July 5, 1954 in Groningen, 50 years old. He was a sales representative. He was married to Abelina Maria Huisman. They had two children. Tine was a prideful woman (perhaps because of her husband's position ) and was married to a teacher called Huizing in Nieuw Buinen, province Drenthe. Tine passed away when she was about 90 years old. They had two children, a boy and a girl and they both could learn well and both were airplane pilots. After Reinderdina Vrieze passed away Hindrik Mulder lived with his daughter Tine in Nieuw Buinen. From there he sometimes visited his brother and sister in law Jan Waalkens and Antje Vrieze on their little farm in The Lehte near Bellingwolde. He arrived by bus in Bellingwolde and then first went to Berend Meulman and Reina Waalkens (daughter of Antje Vrieze) to get a bicycle so he could ride the last part to the Lehte.
3. Reinderdina was a sister of Ettie Kolk.

Engeltje came to the US on the SS Rotterdam on
7/25/1889 according to the ship's register. She is
listed as Engeltje Frieze on the first line of the
second page of the register. She was listed as a maid
and her travel destination was Iowa. She was probably
traveling with a 23 year old male having the same
surname, who was listed on the last line of the first
page of the register.
Her headstone reads "Engeltje Vrieze Roelsema, Died Feb
9, 1914, Age 51 Years, 3 Mo 12 Dy". She was listed as
Engel Vrieze in 1925 Iowa Census record of her children,
Anna, Coonie and Zena.
Here a picture of the children and their partners of Engeltje Vrieze and Zens Roelfsema.

George Roelfsema a little behind his wife Esther.
Zena Roelfsema before her husband Albert Hans.

John Roelfsema behind his wife Geetie Helmers.
Not on the picture is Anna Roelfsema. She was born in 1891 and passed away in 1926, age 35 years old.
She was married to Albert Hans. In 1929 Albert Hans married her sister Zena Roelfsema. Zena looked after
the three children of her sister Anna next to her own four children and was a very good mother for all of the children.
Coonie was born in 1893 and passed away in 1978, 85 years old.
John was born in 1894 and passed away in 1965, 71 years old.
Dena was born in 1895 and passed away in 1975, 80 years old.
George was born in 1897 and passed away in 1983, 86 years old.

IDA
Ida (Kolk) Price, 95, passed away peacefully at home in Longview, Washington on January 20, 2015.
She was born on November 20,1919 in Sterling, Nebraska to Albert John and Etta Mae (Frieze) Kolk. Ida was the youngest of ten children, sisters Dena, Caroline, Gertrude, Margaret, Marie, Angie and brothers George, John and Conrad. Ida met the love of her life, John (Jack) Dalton Price in Centralia, Washington in 1950. They were married a few months later on December 1, 1950 in Monterey California. Ida and Jack enjoyed 58 years together before Jack passed away. Although Ida never had children of her own, she had a special place in her heart for all children. There wasn't a child she didn't love and who didn't love her back.
She served in the Navy from December 1944 to May 1946, Yeoman Third Class, Ida Kolk was stationed in Bronx, New York, Treasure Island San Francisco, California and San Bruno, California. During her tour of duty she was responsible for scheduling entertainment for the troops as well as many secretarial duties. Ida grew up in Eckley, Colorado later living in Longview, Centralia and Portland until 1957, when Jack and her moved to Denver, Colorado where both were employed by Denver Federal Center. Ida worked for the Geology Department until her retirement. Early in her work career, she worked for Longview Fibre Company (her favorite job) as well as working as a switch board operator and Montgomery Wards Auditor.
Ida moved back to Washington in 2010 to be near family. She was quick witted and kept us laughing. Ida was a loving caring person and will be missed by all who knew her. Dance the night away and be at peace. Mak de leiden Ida!
Ida was preceded in death by her husband Jack, her parents, all her siblings and many other cherished family members. Ida is survived by her nieces Pauline Lowry and Bert Galford. Also surviving are numerous great nieces and great nephews as well as her dear friend Esther Banks of Lakewood, Colorado and Esther's family.
