Hiram and Ina (Schilling) Cumley

INA'S FAMILY

In 1880 Monroe County, Ohio, Jacob Schilling is 61, Martha E. 58, with August 24, Charles 22, Louisa 20, Frederic 18, and George14.

In 1900, Eckley precinct, Georgeis farming, born August 1865 in Ohio, married seven years to Ella S. March 1868 Illinois. Hazel July 1894 and Ina August 1897 born in Colorado.

On the same page are Marvin Cook, born July 1838 in Illinois, married 42 years to Margaret Nov 1828 Tennessee. She's had six kids, three living.
1901 "George Schilling of Eckley sold his ranch last week to Mr. Morgan of Hastings."

May 13, 1910 "Mrs. George Schilling and daughter Ina left the latter part of the previous week for a visit with Mrs. Schilling's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cook, of Joplin, Missouri. Ina will the summer there helping to care for her grand parents, who are very old and in poor health. Mrs. Schilling will return to Wray in a few weeks."

In 1910 Yuma County, on the Vernon road from Wray, George is farming 44, Ella S. 43, Hazel 15, Ina 12, and Thelma 5.

HIRAM AND INA

Hiram Cumley married "Iva Schillings" on May 23, 1916, recorded in Yuma County.

"Notice is hereby given that Hiram Cumley, of Wray, Colorado, who on May 2, 1916, and July 23, 1917, made One & Addl. Homestead Entry, for land in Section 33, Township 4 North, Range 44 West, has filed notice of intention to make Pinal Three Year Proof, to establish claim to the land above described , before T. C. Jennings, at Wray, Colorado, on the 14th day of October, 1919. Claimant nnmes as witnesses: John W. Wilkins, William H. Courtney, Lewis L. Corwin, Ernest Chambers, all of Wray, Colorado."

In 1920 Wray precinct, Hiram Crumley is 26, born in Missouri, Ina 22, Leala 3, Letha five months, sister Bulah 14 and brother Howard 11, all five born in Colorado.

In 1930 Wray, Hiram Cumley is a laborer in a coal yard, 36, Ina 32. Heal M. is 13, Letha G. 10, Earl Ws. 8, Floyd R. 6, Royden D. 4, and Glen A. 1.

1934 Wray Misses Leah and Letha Cumley, and Velma Jeanne Richards spent last Tuesday afternoon at the Walt Hadlock home.

April 1935 Miss Letha Cumley spent Tuesday morning with her mother, Mrs. Ina Cumley. Mr. George Schilling, Haxel Zancker, Letha and Leah Cumley spent Saturday evening at the D. H. Donovan home.

September 1937 "Mrs. Hazel Zancker and Mrs. B. W. Richards and daughter visited their sister, Mrs. Hiram Cumley Thursday afternoon."

"Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Cumley have three sons in the service. Sergeant Floyd (Bud) Cumley began training with the infantry on February 25, 1943 at Camp Roberts, California, and sailed overseas the following July. For wounds received a year later in the South Pacific he was awarded the Purple Heart which was forwarded to his parents. He is now driving a truck in New Guinea.

Corporal Wayne Cumley entered Service in May 1943 and received training at Kearns Field, Utah, Lincoln Nebraska, and New York. He is now stationed at Tonopah, Nevada, as a ground crew mechanic in the air corps. His wife is with him.

The third son, Private Royden Cumley, graduate of the Wray high school last year, is now on combat duty with the infantry in Germany. Pvt. Cumley spent a furlough in Wray last November shortly before he sailed for overseas."

Ina (Schilling) Cumley 1897-1962 is buried in Wray, # 27880965, with Hiram C. Cumley 1893-1969.
"Mrs. Hiram Cumley. a life-long resident of the Wray community, died Monday September 10, 1962 at the Weld County hospital in Greeley at the age of 65 years and 20 days. Her death followed many months of illness.
The former Ida Schilling, a daughter of George and Ellen Schilling, pioneer residents of Wray, was born at Wray on August 21, 1897. She grew to womanhood here and was married Hiram Cumley in 1915.
Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Cumley. She was known as a good wife and mother and was well liked by everyone who knew her.
Her parents and one son, Glenn Arthur, preceded Mrs. Cumley in death. Surviving her are her husband, Hiram Cumley; her children, Leah Richards of Yuma, Letha Rascr of Portland. Ore., Helen Walter of Castle Rock, Carolyn Cumley of Wray, Wayne Cumley of Portland, Ore., Royden Cumley of Sacramento, Calif., Ronald Cumley of Sacramento, Calif., and Floyd Cumley of Wray; two sisters, Thelma Richards of Yuma and Mrs. Hazel Morreau of Brush, and many grandchildren.
The funeral service was held at the Lockwood Mortuary in Wray at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon with the Rev. Dale Wheeler officiating. Interment was at Grandview cemetery."

Helen Virginia Walter was born in Wray to Hiram and Ina (Schilling) Cumley. She graduated from Wray High School and was a homemaker.
She married Byron “Bud” Walter in Raton, N.M., in 1955. He died Oct. 9, 2002.
Mrs. Walter loved crocheting and children. She died Thursday at her home.
Survivors: Two daughters, Susan Walter of Evans and Sharon Evans and husband Tim of Winchester, Ill.; two grandsons, Jared and Ryan Evans, both of Winchester; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by: Her parents, five brothers and three sisters.
Services: Services with inurnment will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grandview Cemetery in Wray.

GLENN

"Glenn Arthur, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Cumley was born in Wray on May 14, 1929. The light of his earth life went out at the Wray hospital on November 29, 1931 following a struggle with complications following an attack of scarlet fever. The funeral services were in charge of Rev. Clark Bovver at the mortuary on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 2:00 p. m. The text was from 2 Samuel 12: 'I shall go to him but he cannot return to me.' The singing was by Maude and Florabel Walsh and Wilma Jean Meyers. The pall bearers were the four brothers of Mr. Cumley. Burial was in Grandview cemetery. Besides the parents there are two sisters, Leah and Leatha and three brothers, Wayne, Royden and Floyd and a large number of relatives and friends to mourn the passing of the dear one."
CAROLYN

Carolyn Ruth Holiday was born in Wray on Aug 12, 1936 to Ina Schillings and Hiram Cumley and died Feb 28, 1975.
She grew up in Wray and attended Wray schools. She later worked at Cederdale Rest Home and in Sep 1967 went to California and married Glen Holiday. They lived in California until returning to Wray three years age.
She was preceded by her mother, father and two brothers. Survivors include her husband, Glenn and son, Dale; stepdaughters, Barbara and Judy and grandson, Jackie; sisters, Leah Richards of Yuma, Helen Walter of Loveland,
Letha Raser of Portland, Oregon; brothers, Wayne of Portland, Oregon, Royden and Ronald Cumley of Sacramento, California.
Services were Monday Mar 3 at the Presbyterian Church and interment was at Grandview.

MARGARET

July 1996 "Margaret Jeanette Ulrich of Sterling died Sunday. She was 75. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm today at Tennant Funeral Home in Sterling. She was born Margaret Jeanette Cumley on April 14, 1921 in Wray (Yuma County).
Mrs. Ulrich was a resident of Arvada until retirement.
She enjoyed her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband; a son Jack, Sterling; a daughter, Sandy Johnson, New Hope, Minn; a brother, Melvin of Greeley, a sister Doris McKinstery, Illinois; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

MARGARET

July 1996 "Margaret Jeanette Ulrich of Sterling died Sunday. She was 75. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm today at Tennant Funeral Home in Sterling. FLOYD

Floyd Kenneth Cumley was born in Wray on Aug. 1, 1923 to Ina Schillings and Hiram Cumley and passed away Nov. 18, 1974. He grew up in Wray. On Feb. 18 1943 he entered the service spending his entire time overseas. He was discharged Dec. 23, 1945 with the Purple Heart.
On Mar. 17, 1947 he married Darlene Lush. They had two sons, Danny Kenneth and Denny DeLase, both of Wray.
He owned a truck line for several years and a pool hall. In 1967 he started working for the RJ-2 school district as a custodian. Ill health forced his retirement in Jan 1974.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father and a brother. Survivors are his wife and two sons; sisters, Carolyn Holliday of Wray, Letha Raser of Portland, Oregon, Leah Richards of Yuma, Helen Walter of Loveland; brothers, Wayne of Portland, Oregon, Royden and Ronald of Sacramento, California and three grandchildren."

Denny Cumley, 64 was born in Wray, Colorado to Floyd (Bud) and Darlene Cumley on May 20, 1951. Denny graduated from Wray High School in 1970. He married Gladys Wheaton on Feb. 13, 1970 and to this union they had two daughters Lisa and Abbi. Denny and Gladys later divorced.
Denny loved golfing and team roping. He enjoyed going to the vets club to play cards. Denny worked for the city of Wray for 10 years. He also worked for Doug Sessions Construction for 22 years. Denny was a member of the Wray Volunteer Fire Department for many years. After retiring Denny enjoyed helping Doug Myers. Denny loved a Sunday afternoon when his buddies would come over to watch an intense bronco game. Denny thought it was awesome to watch his grandsons wrestle, a sport Denny loved. He was proud of his granddaughters and their achievements in 4-H and life itself.
Denny was a well-liked guy. He knew no strangers. Denny was known as “Uncle Denny” to many people even if he wasn’t related. Everyone will remember his fun, ornery personality. He was truly one of a kind!
Denny is preceded in death by his Father Bud Cumley, Granny Eleanor Lush as well as Grandpa Pete and Grandma Ina Cumley. He leaves to mourn his Daughters Lisa Spelts of Wray, Abbi and husband Paul Garcia of Sterling. Mother Darlene Cumley of Wray. Grandkids Briann and husband Aaron Schwartz of Wray and Kortnee and husband Brenden Dutton of Belton, Mo. Austin and Caleb Garcia of Sterling, and anxiously awaiting Denny’s first great granddaughter Tinsley Mae Schwartz due April 4th. Also, his only brother Danny and wife Mel Cumley of Wray, Nephews Kevin and wife Gette Cumley of Strasburg and Casey and wife Ginger Cumley of Lutz, Florida. As well as great niece and nephew Jasz and Erik Cumley of Strasburg. Last, but not least lots of extended family and many friends.
A Memorial Service was held on Monday, March 28, 2016, 2:00 p.m. at the Schmidt-Jones Funeral Home in Wray, Colorado with Pastor Glen Kline officiating. Inurnment was held in the Grandview Cemetery in Wray, Colorado following services. "

THELMA

1943 "Mrs. Paul Richards was taken back to Denver in the Lockwood ambulance Thursday night of last week and placed in Porter Sanitarium where on Friday she submitted to an appendectomy. Her condition was quite serious at the time of the operation, but she is now reported to be recovering satisfactorily. Her husband and her father, Hiram Cumley, accompanied the ambulance on the trip to Denver. Mr. Richards returned to Wray Monday.

October 1970 - Thelma Richards of Yuma and Ann Ansom of Vona attended the funeral of Ann's sister Margie Cox of Meeker.

HELEN

"Miss Helen Cumley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Cumley of Wray, became the bride of Byron C. Walter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harley Walter of Eckley, on Saturday morning, June 25, 1955, at the Golden Ring Wedding Chapel in Raton, N. M.. Mrs. John O. Regian, justice of the peace, performed the double ring ceremony at eleven-thirty. Witnesses for the couple were Mrs. Esther Brockman and Fred J. Suygart, both of Raton. The bride wore a navy blue suit with blue and white accessories for her marriage. a The couple returned from Raton to honeymoon in Colorado Springs and Denver and are now living in Wray. The bride is a graduate of the Wray high school with the class of '5l and plans to continue working at the Pines Cafe. The groom is a graduate of the Eckley high school with the class of '49, served two years with the United States Marine Corps and is now employed with the Soil Conservation Service in Wray."

Helen is buried in Wray 1919-2006, with Bryon 1931-2002.

LETHA

Letha Genevieve Cumley and Archie Willis Raser married in Clark County, Washington on June 12, 1942. Both were of Portland. Arch was 30, born i Colorado to Clinton W. Raser and Alberta McCaw of Georgia.
BROTHER CHESTER

Letha 1919-1977 is buried in Portland # 195686058, with Archie 1910-1969.

HIRAM'S BROTHER CHESTER

"Chester C. Cumley, a former Wrayite and a brother of Hiram Cumley of Wray, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 1961, at the Weld County General hospital in Greeley. He was 74. He had lived in Greeley since 1926 where he was in the concrete construction business.
Hiram Cumley was at the hospital in Greeley when his brother was admitted as a patient shortly before his death. Chester Cumley was born on June 22, 1886 in Mobley County, Mo.. He moved with his parents to Creede where he worked in mining. He came to Wray in 1912 where he married Sadie Bell Penton on December 19, 1915. The family moved from here to Greeley.
Survivors include six children, Mrs. Kills B. Goodwin of Greeley, Mrs. Lulu May Sotham of Provo, Utah, Mrs. Margie Ulrich of Arvada, Mrs. Doris McKinatry of Grant Park I11., Earl R. Cumley of Arvada and Melvin L. Cumley of the US Army at Fort Riley Kansas, brothers and sisters, Howard of Loveland, Robert of Seattle, Wash., Hiram of Wray. Mrs. Olle Wills and Mrs Beulah Koshl of Burlington, Wash., Mrs. Minntr Stratton of Renton Wash.: 24 grandchildren and ten great-grand-children.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 11 a. m. from Adamson Memorial Chapel in Greeley, with the Rev. Harold P. Converse in charge. Interment was at Linn Grove cemetery."

HENDERSON

1915 "Mr. and Mrs. Henderson Cumley of Selma, California, former well known residents of this county arrived within the past week from their California home. They were entertained last evening in Wray at the W. J. Weller home."
August 31, 1922 "Mrs. Col Cumley has so far recovered from her prolonged illness that she was able to return to her home near Wray a few days ago. Mrs. Cumley contracted typhoid fever several months ago and for many weeks her condition was so grave that little hope was entertained for her recovery. She was cared for at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Josh Jones. Mrs. Cumley passed the crisis several weeks ago, and from that time on improved rapidly. Her many friends will be pleased to know that she has almost entirely recovered."

December 1922 "Word was received several days ago that Mrs. Henderson Cumley had passed away at her home in Long Beach, Calif. The body, accompanied by the husband and other relatives, will arrive in Wray Friday night for burial. Funeral services will be held at the Christian church in this city Saturday, conducted by Mrs. Boast.
Mrs. Cumley is survived by her husband, by two sons, Dale and Col, and by one daughter, Mrs. Ruby Culbertson. Mrs. Culbertson and Dale both live in California. Col Cumley lives near Wray. Mrs. Cumley is a former resident of this county and is well known to the older settlers. She had been in failing health for more than a year ."

CLYDE - son of SANFORD

Clyde Cumley and Gladys Hulen married in Yuma County on September 6, 1919.

James N. Hulen, 67, who was a widely known and popular barber at Wray for many years, died Saturday January 13, 1962 at Greeley where he had made his home since he moved there from Wray in 1935. The funeral service was held from Macy's Drawing Room at Greeley Monday at 10 a. m with the Rev. Donald Adkins offlclating. Burial was in Grandview Cemetery at Wray Monday afternoon. Mr. Hulen came to Wray in 1910 and lived here for 25 years. His wife preceded him in death in 1928.
Surviving children are Elate Cooper, Gertrude Jackson and Leo Hulen, all of Greeley, Bill Hulen of Portland, Ore., Gladys Cumley of Pueblo and Dick Hulen of Wray."

Wm. Clyde Cumley 1891-1960 is buried in Greeley # 28762211, with Gladys Ione (Hulen) Cumley 1898-1968.
