MRS. WILLIS WRITES OF NEW MEXICO

Silver City, N. M. April 10, 1916.
Elmer Graham, Wray, Colo.:
Dear Sir: Please send the Rattler to us. We miss it very much and like to hear how home folks are getting along.
Ruth seems to be doing well, although she doesn't hold her weight, but time will improve that.
We are rather near the Mexican trouble. A year ago they came to Silver and stole all the ammunition from the armory. The armory is well guarded now and I guess there is not much danger of them getting this far for a while, anyway, on account of the troops between here and there. The trouble at Columbus, N. M. was much more serious than the account the newspapers gave of it. People at home do not realize how serious the Mexican situation is becoming. There have been several race riots near here and the people here came almost having one. There are a great many negroes and Chinese here as well as Mexicans.
In January potatoes, etc., were planted in the Chinese gardens at the edge of town. In February the fruit trees at Fort Bayard were in blossom. Lilacs and everything like that are in blossom, though somewhat blighted by a light snow.
Ralph and the kids can hardly wait until the season is out so they can go hunting. Ruth is missing a great many interesting pictures because she doesn't seem to feel like taking them. We gave her a kodak for Xmas.
Hoping that we will soon receive the paper, I will close.
Respectfully Yours,
Mrs. Ralph H. Willis, 104 Pinos Altos St., Silver City, New Mexico"

Julia Ann Jemima Avery; born May 26, 1867 in covered wagon in Illinois. Dropped her name and took her mother's name of Marion Avery. Married Eugene Dale Gibbs, Sr.
Marion Avery at birth was named Julia Ann Jemima Avery, but so disliked the name she adopted her mother's name of 'Marion'. In later life she used the name Julia Marion, but was known most of her life by the nickname "Mamie."
She married Ralph Hayward Willis September 13, 1906 at Mason City, Iowa, with her children, nine year old Ruth, and six year old Dale present. He was born November 11, 1875 in La Crosse, Wisconsin and was a freight brakeman on the Chicago Great Western Railway. They resided in Mahnomen and Hawley, Minn., also Bloomington, Nebraska. Later they went farming near Haigler, Nebraska, and in 1911 he filed on a homestead six miles north of Wray, Colorado. Rented the homestead and eventually sold it. Moved to Silver City, New Mexico and operated a Confectionary store, later moved the business to Deming, New Mexico. After WW I returned to Colorado, living in Brush, and later on a farm 20 miles from Delta owned by the daughter. She disposed of it and the family moved to Delta, Colorado, and later to Brighton, Colorado where they were divorced in 1925. No children of this marriage. Court granted permission to drop the name of Willis and resume the name of Gibbs. She moved to Los Angeles, California with her daughter in October 1925-
