John B. and Minnie (Winkleman) Thomas, Vernon
Harry Thomas and Lydia Kuk were married in 1916 and settled on their homestead southeast of Idalia, Colorao where their five children (Eunice, Dorothy, Rawlin, John, and Shirley) were born. They spent the first twenty years of their marriage near Idalia, then lived in or near Vernon for six years before moving to Kit Carson in 1942. Harry was born at Chadron, Nebraska and as an infant came to Yuma County with his seven brothers and sisters and his parents, John Bernard and Emma Minnie Anna (Winkleman) Thomas, and settled south of Vernon. Ludia was one of the eleven children of Gottlieb and Caroline (Lange) Kuk and was born and raised at Newton which was in southern Yuma County. Harry and Lydia were engaged in farming. Much of the food was home grown as they planted potato patches, vegetable gardens, milked cows, and raised and butchered their own chickens, pork, and beef. Vegetables were dried or canned and meat was cured or canned for use throughout the year as there was no electricity or refrigeration. wheat was exchanged at the local flour mill in Idalia for flour. Excess eggs and cream, were taken to the general store and traded for additional groceries, oil for kerosene lamps, chicken feed, overalls, shoes, dress material, or whatever was needed at the time. The children rode horseback to school most of the time. The older ones attended Newton grade school and Eunice and Dorothy graduated from Idalia High /school, attended college in Greeley, and taught school. Rawlin and John graduated from Vernon and served in the Army -- Rawlin in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy and John in Japan. Shirley attended schools in Kit Carson and Vernon and graduated from Ellicot near Colorado Springs. She attended college in Fort Collins and taught school. He was always excited to attend any of his grandchildren's activities, spending many evenings and weekends watching their games and dance recitals.
