The Yount Family mentioned in the very interesting
diary.
Jacob and Margaret (Homan) Yount. Jacob was born 1836 in Virginia.
He served in Stonewall Jackson's Brigade of the 5th Virginia, CSA. He
died in 1927.
November 6, 1908 "Mrs. J. S. Yount died last Monday at Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Mr. and Mrs. Yount have
resided since leaving Yuma county.
Mrs. Yount has been an invalid for several years and the move was made for the
benefit of her health. She is the mother of the Yount boys who reside south of Wray, and Mrs. Harry Boyes.
Many friends in Yuma county extend sympathy to Mr. Yount and his sons and daughter in the loss of a wife and motherr."
September 29, 1927 "Jacob Spitler Yount was born in Augusta County, Virginia seven miles from Stanton, July 22, 1836. His early life was spent on his father's farm. He was educated in Oakland Academy at New Hope, Va., which at that time was a private institution.
At the age of 18 he left the academy to take up teaching school,
and was thus occupied for two years.
On May 15, 1856 he was married to Margaret Homan and began farming.
In 1860 he volunteered in the West Augusta, Home Guards of Va.,
which went into active service at Harpers Ferry April 17, 1861.
This company was under the command of General Stonewall Jackson.
During the war he was wounded twice, the first times being injured in the left
hip while carrying his dying captain from the battle field.
He was later injured in the same hip and was quite lame for several years after the Civil war. The war over, he returned to Augusta County with his comrades and began to rehabilitate the war wrecked land.
In 1874 he moved with his family to Eastern Va., Ambush county, where they remained eight years.
He and his family then moved to Hardware, in Fluvan county, Va.
Poor health and adverse conditions urged the family to move west to Iowa. This move to the extreme north was unsatisfactory on account of the severe winters.
The Leonards and others had come to Yuma county, Colorado from that part of the country and were well satisfied so in 1888
he came with his family to Yuma county, settling on the old homestead
four miles south and one mile west of Vernon, which he has considered his home ever since.
In 1905 he went with his wife to Phoenix, Arizona for Mrs. Yount's health,
and in 1906 to Albuquerque, N. M. It was there that Mrs. Yount passed away
November 2, 1908.
Since that time he has been transitory, spending his summers in Colorado and his winters in Albuquerque.
In 1912 and in 1921 he visited his many friends and relatives in Augusta county, Va. The winters of 1919 and 1920 he spent in Long Beach, Cal.
with his daughter, Mrs. C. A. Wilmarth. Four daughters proceeded their father to the great beyond:
Mrs. Millie Hayne, who passed in Virginia,
Mrs. Rose Wingfield, Mrs. Maly Isora Wilmarth, and Mrs. Maude Boyes.
He leaves to mourn his departure, one sister, Mrs. Annie Harris of Crimona, Va.,
one brother Geo. A. Yount of Denver, Colo., and four sons, Edgar of Vernon, Lee of Burlingtou, Howard of Jarosa, Colo., and Bell of Vernon.
His activity in Christian affidrs will long be remembered as one of his striking characteristics. Old residents recollect his ardent enthusiasm
in developing Sunday school work and his loyal support of the Presbyterian church in Vernon.
The funeral was held at the M.E. church of Vernon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. A.W. Lenz. A large number gathered to pay their last respects to a man
who always stood for high ideals and who had been their close friend for many years.
