Richard Bennet Taylor and Hannah Frances (Collins) Taylor, Hale.
 

Richard B. Taylor married Louisa Young Dec 5, 1856 in Christian County, Illinois.  There's a Louisa Young in 1850 Christian County, 12, born in Illinois, with Billy 56 and Rebecca 41 Young.

Richard enlisted in the 13th Regiment, Kansas Volunteers Company A in Troy Kansas August 27, 1862, saying he was born in Cuyahoga County, New York.

On J___ ?, 1863, Private Richard B. Taylor was absent from the Company Muster Roll and was sentenced to confinement at Springfield, Missouri. The sentence read: "And the court do therefore sentence Richard B. Taylor, Private, Co. A., 15th Kansas Vol. to undergo an imprisonment for and during the service of thirty days with a ball and chain attached to his wrist and ankle and that he be marched around the Public square in the City of Springfield, Mo., one hour each day between the hours of 10 in the forenoon and 2 in the afternoon for the said period of thirty days."

In 1870 he and Hannah are in Nemaha County, Kansas, with Richard 8 and Jasper 2.

In 1880 Osborne County Kansas, Richard B. is 43, Hannah 35, Richard B. 17, Jasper 12, Lillian E. 7, and Nancy D. 5.

Jasper proved up a quarter just south of Hale in sections 13 and 14, 5S 43W in 1898, and Richard next to him in 1901 - Richard's claim touched Ulysses G. Ratcliff.

Richard Bennett Taylor, Sr. filed his homestead claim in 1888 for 160 acres one mile south of the Republican River and about seven miles west of the Kansas line. At that time the land was in Arapahoe County, then Yuma County in 1889 and finally Kit Carson County in 1890. In 1900 he convinced the Postal Department there was a need for a post office in the area and his wife, Hannah Frances (Collins) Taylor, was appointed post Mistress 30 October 1900. It wasn’t long until they hired Mr. H. W. Crites to build a small stone building to house the store and post office, which they had named, "Hale".

In 1909 the Taylors sold their interest in the store to the Westfall brothers and their brother-in-law, Jesse Roe. Jessie soon tired of the store and moved over toward Wray to a farm. Soon after, Floyd Westfall also quit the store and moved to a farm near Oberlin, Kansas. George Westfall remained until the winter of 1911 when he sold out to a Mr. Baker and his son-in-law, Mr. Day. These men sold it to Glen Wooley and A. Winn from Kanorado, Kansas in the spring of 1913. Mr. Wooley later bought Mr. Winn out and remained with the business for 25 years. It has changed hands a number of times since.

Dora Nancy Ratcliff proved up a quarter in section 24 in 1912, touching Jasper's claim.

Theodore R. Taylor cash-claimed a quarter in 18, 3S 42W in 1890 - that's a dozen miles north of Richard's

In 1900 Lansing Richard B. born Feb 1837 in New York, has been married 38 years to Hannah F. June 1843 Pennsylvania.  They have Liza J Nov 1886 in Kansas.

A man bought the store in the 80's or 90's and rumors were he burned the store to collect insurance and then went back to where he lived before he moved to Hale. That is why part of the store is now gone. The new owner’s name is Dan Patten and he worked for Colorado Outdoors magazine in Denver. He kept what was left of the building after the fire and built onto it. This is how it looks in 2004.

In 1910 Hale Richard B. Taylor, 73, New York, is married to Hannah F. 66, Pennsylvania.

Richard Bennet Taylor, born Feb 19, 1837, died May 29, 1914, and is buried in the Kanorado Cemetery.

"Richard Taylor, an elderly man living in Kanorado, died Saturday May 9, a burial casket being furnished by the Bower undertaking firm of this city. John Heston came to Goodland and secured a large number of floral pieces and cut flowers. It is inferred the funeral took place on Sunday May 10, at Kanorado.

In 1920 Hale Hanna is widowed, living with her son Jess, 53, his wife Eva 43, and their daughter Edith 5.

In 1865 Doniphan County Kansas,  John J. Collins 65, is married to Sarah H 56.  They have Mary J. 18, Joseph B 16 , both Pennsylvania, Chas E. 10 Illinois.  Next household is Theodore Collins 33, Maryland, and Amelia A. 32 New York.

Mary Josephine COLLINS Mansfield, father John J. Collins, Mother Sara A. Collins, (both parents buried in Troy, Kansas)  married John Shelton Mansfield 1845-1916.  Mary Feb 25, 1845 - May 28, 1910 are in Mount Olive Cemetery, Troy

LILLIAN

In 1900 Lansing Daniel Mansfield Aug 1866 in Kansas, has been married nine years to Lillian Dec 1872 Missouri.  They've had six kids, five living.  May June 1890, Mary Apr 1892, Shelton June 1895, Lulu Jan 1898, and Charles May 1900, all born in Colorado.


Lillian Eska Taylor was born in Holt County, Mo., Dec. 30, 1872, and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lula Einspahr, in Imperial, Neb., on Sept. 18, 1944, at the age of 71 years, 9 months and 11 days.
She moved with her parents to Kansas where she spent the greater part of her childhood, coming to Colorado in 1888.  On Nov. 30, 1891, at Burlington she was united in marriage to Daniel B. Mansfield. To this union were born ten children, one of them preceding her in death.
She leaves to mourn her departure one daughter by a former marriage, Mrs. Jessie Winfrey, of Burlington, Mrs. Mary Smith and Shelton Mansfield, both of Wray, Colo., Mrs. Lula Einspahr of Imperial, Neb., Mrs. Nola Lauer of Des Moines, Iowa, Charles Mansfield of Richmond, Calif., Glenn Mansfield of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Eliza Chirrick and Mrs. Ann Hollipeter, both of Wilmington, Calif., also 34 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Eliza Snead, of Ridgefield, Wash., besides a host of other relatives and friends. Her husband preceded her in death of Oct. 3, 1934. Since that time she had made her home among her children.
She entered the Spears Sanitarium in Denver, Colo., April 26, 1944, and remained there until the middle of July. From there she went to her daughter's, Mrs. J.W. Winfrey, and was there two weeks. On Aug. 5, she was taken to Imperial, Neb., to spend the winter with her daughter, Mrs. R.J. Einspahr.
Mrs. Mansfield was a kind and loving mother, with a host of relatives and friends and will be greatly missed by those who knew her.
Mrs. Mansfield had not been very well for some time, but had only been confined to her bed for about two weeks. She was very patient all during her illness although her suffering was very severe. She clung to her faith in God and expressed her desire so many times to go to the Heavenly home above prepared for his children. She was conscious to the end and the most of her children were at her bedside when she passed away.

Lillian married Jesse Grant Biggs (1867-1955) in St Francis May 15, 1889, divorced.

Then she married Daniel Bedford Mansfield (1866-1934) in Burlington November 30, 1891

DORA

Next household is the Ulysses G. Radcliff July 1868 Kansas, married eleven years to Dora, Jan 1875 Kansas.  they have Frank Dec 1889, Earl Nov 1893, Mary J. April 1896, Hannah M. Dec 1894, and Melinda January 1900, all in Colorado- and with them is a Charles E. Collins, uncle, born Feb 1855 in Illinois (possibly the same Collins family as Hannah?)

Dora N. Ratcliff divorced Ulysses G. Ratcliff September 8, 1906 in Yuma County, saying they were married in Bird City Kansas February 1, 1889, and had children Franklin 17, Earl 13, Mary Jane 11, Hannah 9,and Matilda May 6.

In 1910 Hale a Charles E. Collins, 55, says he's married but no spouse, has a niece Dora N. 35, and they have Mary M. 10 - grand-niece.

E.G. Kuk, farmer in 1922, born Yuma County 1894, married Mae Ratcliffe.

Charles E. Collins, born February 24, 1855, died July 8, 1910 in Saint Joseph Missouri - certificate said he was born in Illinois, father John J. Collins born in Pennsylvania, mother unknown born in Maryland.  Charles was married but no wife listed.    Informant J.W. Collins, Robinson, Kansas. To be buried in Troy, Kansas. 

That makes the Mary Ellen Collins claim in 1911 in section 24, 5S 43W - joining Dora Ratcliff's claim - as "Widow of Charles" a probability.

In 1910 Ulysses is divorced, and Frances F. 20, Ulysses E. 16 (must be Earl), Mary J. 14, and Hannah M. 11 are living in Hale.

Francis Franklin Radcliff registered for WWI, saying he was born Dec 9, 1889 in Hale.

In 1920 Hale Dora, 45, divorced, is living with son Frank, 30, and they're still there in 1930.

Ulysses G. Ratcliff of Hale married Mrs. Lizzie Boggs of Indianapolis, Indiana in Burlington February 17, 1932.

Frank - 1889 -1938 is buried in the Saint Johns Cemetery.

Ulysses Grant Ratcliff July 23, 1869 - January 6, 1958  and Dora Nancy Ratcliff Jan 7, 1875 Dec 4, 1942 are on the same stone in Saint Johns...

RICHARD

In 1900 Lansing Richard B. Taylor, born Sept 1862 in Kansas has been married 14 years to Clara B. May 1871 Illinois.  They've lost three kids, but have Alma B. July 1890, Octa C. Jan 1895, Martha J. Sept 1899, all Colorado.

Brother of Mrs. Lillian Mansfield, Wray, Colo.. and Mrs. Lizze Snead of Ridgefield, Wash. .Services 2:30 Thursday from Idalia German Lutheran Church. Interment Idalia. To lie in state 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Smith Bros, drawing room.

In 1900, on the same page as Richard, is Jasper Taylor, Nov 1867 in Kansas, living alone.  He's alone in 1910, but in 1920 Hale he's married to Eva, and they have Edith, 5.  Mother Hannah, 76 is with them.

In 1930 is in Wray, 64, married to Eva, 48.  They have Edith A., 14.

Hannah Frances Taylor, daughter of John Collings and Sarah Haynes, died Feb 19, 1927 in Clark County, Washington, and is buried in Sara Union Cemetery, Clark County.

Eliza J. Hancock - Nov 27, 1886-Sept 21, 1967 is also in Sara Union Cemetery.

Chas. Ashliman  married Octa C. Taylor Sept 11, 1913.

Liza J. Taylor married Lewis V. Cathcart February 9, 1910.

1914 "Mrs. Vernon Cathcart and mother, Mrs. R. B. Taylor were business visitors in Wray Monday."

Lewis V. Cathcart - Feb 6, 1895 - July 22, 1915 is buried in the Kanorado cemetery.

Mrs. Liza Cathcart married John J. Hancock July 19, 1916.

In 1910 Eliza J. Cathcart 23 and Lewis V. 25 are in Hale.

1915 "The Vernon Cathcart corn sheller shelled corn for Browning and Brooks the latter part of the week."

Eliza Hancock in 1930 is in Clark County, widowed, with kids Joe 18, Clyde 15, Jerry 13, Casey 11, and Ralph 5.

In 1940 Clark County, divorced Eliza and Ralph F. 15 are living alone.

February 23, 1943 in Clark County Liza J. Hancock married Thomas B. Snead.
