where they had been called to the death bed of Mr. Smith's father,
who had been fatally injured by the kick of a horse.
Ray's youngest brother, Elgin came along and will make his home with them."

April 17, 1941 "The Elgin Smith family drove to Lewellen Nebraska last week end and brought his mother Mrs. Hamler, here. A house has been moved from the former Taylor ranch to the Sunnyside ranch for Mrs. Hamler and she will again have her own home, but be near her sons."
January 31, 1952 "Ray and Elgin Smith and wife, with Ted Black, were called to Curtis Nebraska last week end by the death of Guy Coykendall, an uncle of the Smith brothers and a brother-in-law of Mr. Black. Mr. Coykendall homesteaded here many years ago, northwest of Joes but left this region over thirty years ago."

In 1930 Joes precinct, Orren is 28, Merceline 26, with Elinor J. 2 Colorado.
They're next to Ray L. Smith 41, Alta 38, Clare E. 16, and Vera M. 12.

In 1957 Merceline is in Colorado Springs, living at 435 N. Union. Olan W. (Esther K.) at the same address, is in the Air Force. So is Mrs. Esther K. Rakes, a typist at Ent Air ForceBase.
Marceline Rakes born October 7, 1903, died in San Diego County April 4, 1987.
Eleanor Jean Rakes was born August 8, 1927, name as Nadolph in 1944, as Smith in 1949.
March 8, 1945 "Ted Black and daughter, Cecile, accompanied the Elgin Smith family to Otis on Sunday to attend Memorial services for Private George Nadolph, who recently died at a hospital in England from wounds received on the battlefields of teh western front."
Her last residence was Mesa, Arizona.

Francis S. Black married Alta M. Tobin in Pinellas County, Florida in 1943.
In 1945 Pinellas County, Francis is 29, born in Colorado, in the Air Corps. Alta is 1 born in Florida, and they have Francis Jr. 1.

In 1952 Harold and family were living in St. Louis.
CECILE
One post said that Marion Pearl Bates was born August 5, 1881 in Kansas and died February 20, 1971 in Salida.
In 1952 Harold Black of St. Louis arrived and was going to visit Mrs. Cecile Bates and husband of Buena Vista.
James' 1963 obituary listed a daughter Cecile Bates of Salida, Colorado.
October 22, 1964 "Mrs. Amanda Reynolds and son Jim drove to Salida and brought Mr. and Mrs. Pearl Bates hee for the funeral of Mrs. Bates' sister, Leone Stallsworth Thursday."
In February 1970 Pearl Bates, Cecile's husband, passed away in Salida.
Marion P. Bates 1881 - 1970 is buried in Chaffee County # 7855897.

April 2, 1931 John Rice was a Sunday dinner guest at the J.G. Black home.
April 16 - George Cross and daughter Twila, Mrs and Mrs. Marvin Elsey, Leone Black and John Rice called at the Paul Hooper and Ernest Hemmings homes Sunday.
April 23, 1931 "John Rice left Friday for his home in Lewis, Kansas. George Cross took him to Kit Carson, Colorado, and from there he took the train to Hays.
Thelma Black married John L. Rice June 15, 1931, recorded in Yuma County.
1939 "Mrs. Delia Stallsworth's two little daughters of Denver are here visiting at the WWayne Cross home with their grandfather, George Cross."
This might be the same John Rice of south of Wray.
Funeral services for Jerry Ford were held Friday at Cope and interment was at the Cope cemetery. Relatives here to attend the funeral were his parents, his sister, Dorothy, and his brother, all of Portland, Oregon. Harold Black of St. Louis, Missouri was also here for the funeral. Mrs. Ford and children accompanied the folks to Denver Sunday, and she expected to go to St. Louis with her brother to spend some time visiting. Mrs. Marcelene Rakes and family of Laird were also here for the funeral. Yuma Pioneer, Yuma, Colorado June 15, 1944 Transcribed by Carol Moore. He was united in marriage January 8, 1938 to Leone Rice. To this union were born two children: Virden, who preceded him in death, and Verna. He was baptized in the hospital on the evening of his death. Most of his life was spent in the Cope community. Besides his wife and daughter, those left to mourn his going are his step-daughter, Avis Rice; his parents, Virden Ford and and Mayme Ford; one brother Leonard Ford; three sisters, Dorothy Ford, Alberta Eastin, and Ilene Johnston, and a host of friends and relatives. |

November 7, 1957 - Mrs. Grace Black Coykendall, 82, a long time resident of Curtis, died suddenly September 26 following a heart attack. Although in poor health the past 10 years and confined to a wheel chair, she had been active in home and community affairs doing what she could do from her home. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 28, from the Congregational church with the Rev. Homer Blough of the Curtis Congregational church officiating. Burial was in the Curtis cemetery with the Curtis Rebekah lodge in charge of graveside services. Grace Black was born August 2, 1875, in Republic county near Belleville, Kan. She was the daughter of James Black and Harriett Steel Black and grew to womanhood in Kansas. She attended Belleville school at Republic county, Kansas. Mrs. Coykendall was of a family of eight children, five of whom survive. She was married to Guy Coykendall on October 23, 1895, and he preceded her in death on January 25, 1952, at the home in Curtis, where they had resided since 1925. To this union were born four children, three daughters and one son. She was a loyal Rebekah and member of the Congregational Church. survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Jessie Schultz of Moorefield, Mrs. Opal Saum of Dalton, Mrs. Yula Vierson of Maywood SlVIa and one son, Cyrus Guy Coyken of Kankakee,Illinois, 15 grand-children, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. |
Forrest L. Saum, 80, of Elm Creek died Dec. 16, 2001, at his home in Elm Creek. He was born Dec. 8, 1921, in Maywood to Harry C. and Opal T. Coykendall Saum. He grew up in the Maywood and Farnam areas, graduating from Farnam High School in 1941. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1941-1945. He participated in the Battle of Coral Sea and served landings in Africa and Sicily. After the war he worked in Wyoming then came to Kearney and attended Kearney State College. He later worked as a police officer for the City of Kearney, then worked at Turner Body Shop until retiring. He moved to Elm Creek in the early 1980s, where he had lived since. Mr. Saum was a member of the Kearney Elks Lodge 984, Kearney Eagles Lodge 2722 and Kearney Veterans of Foreign War Post 759. He enjoyed the outdoors and especially hunting and fishing. Survivors include two brothers, Hal of Kearney and Burnell of Hamilton, Mont. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother. Memorials are suggested to the Kearney Police Department in care of the Kearney Community Foundation. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary with the Rev. C.J. Willis officiating. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell with graveside military rites provided by the North Platte Veterans Group. ----------------------------------------- KEARNEY - Halton "Hal" Saum, 83, of Kearney died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Hospital. He was born July 5, 1925, in Brandon, to Harry and Opal Coykendall Saum. He graduated from Farnam High School. He taught at Lodgepole. Survivors include his wife of Kearney; daughters, Janet Stull of Lincoln, Terri Winchell of Bellevue, Cynthia Ostgren of Leavenworth, Kan., Trish Wilkinson of Boulder, Colo., and Lisa Saum of Denver; brother, Burnell Saum of Hamilton, Mont.; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and two sisters. Memorials are suggested to Faith United Methodist Church or a scholarship to be established at Elm Creek High School. Online condolences or personal reflections can be submitted at osafh.com. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at the Faith United Methodist Church in Kearney with the Rev.
