WAYNE
July 11, 1935 "Wayne Hicks, son of Russell and Mary Hicks, was fatally injured June £6, by being kicked by a horse. Wayne, who was nearing his twelfth birthday, had spent most of his life on a farm southeast of Eckley. About two years ago his widowed mother was married to Charles Peterson of near Burlington. The family then went to live on the Peterson ranch. Wayne was injured while leading a team of horses from the field where he had been harrowing corn. His grief stricken stepfather spoke of him as being an obedient child and that he had previously handled the team as directed and safely. But thoughtlessly, no doubt, the boy had tied the old horse to the young one, and then looped the rope, by which he was leading them, around his wrist. The young horse evidently became frightened and began kicking. It was a sad sight when his brother Kenneth went to his rescue. His arm was broken in six places, his face and head badly crushed and the collar bone broken. He was rushed to the Burlington hospital but lived only a few hours. "
