In 1910 Wayne County, Missouri Silas Vanmatre is 21, Ettie 20, and they have Catherine 2 and "Beras"  (must be Burress),  1.   Mother-in law Sarah Whitt, widowed, 53, born in Missouri, is living with them.

Etta proved up 320 acres in 5 and 8, 3S 46W in 1917.

This tree also said Etta Hughes was born Aug 25, 1889 in Missouri, marrying Silas Oscar Van Matre Oct 9, 1907 in  Wayne Missouri, dying Dec 20, 1961 in Earl, Colorado.

The  Yuma County diary of Lorinne Barker mentions visiting and working for the Van Matre family, 1922-1926  and   "Viola & Leta & Eveyln Van Matre here" 
 

In 1930 Las Animas County Silas and Ettie have George, 17, Nellie 14, Ellen 12, Ethel 9, Mabel 6, daughter Lora 22 and her husband Charles Sevester, 28, France, their son Burris 21 and his wife Maud 19, Nebraska and son Juddie 19, Missouri and his wife Florence 18, Oklahoma.

Burnice Van Matre - no date- is listed in the Knowles Mortuary of Yuma records.

Eula Van Matre was a daughter of Stabenow (Frain page).

C.W. Van Matre is in the 1934 county directory, Eckley section.

That might be Charles Walter Van Matre, born March 21, 1885.  In 1900 he's in Adams County, Nebraska, with John and Elizabeth Van Meter, Rosa M. 18, Orrie E. 16, Charles W. 15, Frank O. 13, Martin J. 8, Pearl E. 6, Lillie M 4, William J. 3, Loyde C. 11 and Lenord W. three months.

In 1910 Charlie 25, born in West Virginia is farming in Adams County, married four years to Frankie 23, Kansas.  They hae Cecil e, born in Nebraska.

In 1920 they're in Frontier County, Nebraska, with Cecil 13, Walter 7, and Nora 4, all three born in Nebraska.  Nobody has an occupation.

  Nora married Clarence Tuttle in Eckley December 1, 1934 , performed by Frank Foster, minister.  In 1940 they're in Washington County, saying they were in Yuma in 1935.  Jessie E. 3, son , was born in Colorado.  (Clarence was in Abarr in 1930, with his brother-in-law Maurice Fagan and Mamie both 34.  Mother Ada D. Tuttle 54 is also with them.)

In 1940 Charles and Frankie are in Webster County, Nebraska, saying they were in Yuma in 1935.  Lola 15, Fern 13, and Rena 11 were all born in Nebraska.

Walter VanMatre, dying 1976, is buried in the Yuma cemetery.  10/18/1912- 4/19/1976 - WWII Army private.

Richard Lee Van Matre, dying 1944, is also buried there.

Etta B. Van Matre, dying December 23, 1961, is buried in the Masonic Cemetery, Trinidad, Las Animas County.

Phyllis Elaine (Van Matre) Hagerty passed away peacefully at the Whatcom Hospice House in Bellingham on May 2, 2011 in the presence of her loving family at the age of 78. Phyllis was born October 8, 1932 in Yuma, Colorado.

In her teens, she met the love of her life, Jack Hagerty at the Burlington Roller Rink and they later married on August 22, 1947. They spent the next 60 years together as soul mates until Jack's death in 2007.

Phyllis was also preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Kevin Hagerty; great-grandson, Matthew Bernard; brothers-in-law, Lee Rogers and Andy Anderson; and niece, Alison Forsman.

She is survived by sons Dan and Marilyn Hagerty, David Hagerty, Darrell and Laurie Hagerty; daughter Darlene and Al Eshuis; sister Lucille and Harvey Taylor; brother Cliff and Dorothy Van Matre; sisters-in-law Sue Rogers and Maxine Anderson; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Donations may be made to Whatcom Hospice.

A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Friday, May 6th at Squalicum Boathouse at Zuanich Point Park, 2600 Harbor Loop, Bellingham.

April 1931 " E. P. Van Matre took his father, J. W. Van Matre into Yuma Monday to consult a doctor. Mr. Van Matre has been feeling quite badly for several weeks."

John Wesley Van Matre, son of Francis and Elisabeth Van Matre, was born January 9, 1862, at Hartford, West Virginia, and departed from this life at Yuma, Colo., December 6, 1942, at the age of 80 years, 10 months, and 27 days. He was united in marriage to Elisabeth Atkins, at Letart, West Virginia, where they made their home until the year of 1906. Then he moved to western Nebraska with his family, remaining there until tiie year of 1927. The last 15 years of his life was lived in Yuma, Colo.
To this union were born 18 children. His wife and five children have preceded him in death. Those surviving are: Mrs. Rosie Frasier, of Yuma, Colorado; Mrs. Ira Jones, of Roseland, Nebraska; Charley Van Metre,., of Roseland, Nebraska; Martin Van Matre, of Selina, Kansas, Emory Van Metre, of Yuma, Colorado; Mrs. Lillie Harrison, of Portland, Oregon; Brother Lloyd Van Matre, of Overland, Kansas; Lynn Van Metre, of Portland, Oregon. He also leaves to mourn his passing one sister, Mrs. Mollie Daugherty, of Hastings, Nebraska; and six brothers, Dave, of Oxford, Nebr.; Orpha, of Miller, Nebr.; Morgan, of Eden Wyoming; Francis, of Boise, Idaho; Holland, of Hollinger, Nebr.; forty grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. He was a charter member of the Hollinger United Brethren church, remaining a member until death. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Grier at the Hollinger United Brethren church Thursday, Dec. 10th. Interment was made in the family lot in the Bethel cemetery."

November 1938 "Marriage license was issued from the county clerk's office Monday, Nov. 21, to Leo L. Lammey and Ethel M. B. Van Matre, both of Heartstrong."

In 1940 Emery Van Matre, 46, born in Nebraska and Florence 45, Nebraska, are farming in Happyville precinct.  They have Dorothie 17, Luella 15, both born in Nebraska, Eva 13, Francis son, 8, Geraldine 6, and Emely 2, all four born in Colorado.

Next household is Lee and Rose, farming. He's 25, she's 24, both born in Nebraska, with Phyllis 7,Clifford 5, and Maxine three months, all three born in Colorado.

Next household is Cecil 33 and Ruth 28, Donald 4, and Myra 2, all four born in Nebraska, farming.

In 1940 Lloyd Van Matre, 41, with Grace, 38 is working on a WPA project in Vernon precinct  They have Robert - farm laborer-  18, Ruby 15, Elma 12 - these born in Nebraska, Elta 9, Eugene 6, and Joy 4 - these three born in Colorado.  Loyd ana Grace had been in Furnas County, Nebraska in 1930.

Lloyd Cecil Van Matre is mentioned in the Hastings, Nebraska Tribune of October 1995 - as dying at the age of 96 - born in Hastings, dying Grand Junction.

October 1959 Yuma "E. P. Van Matre and his daughter, Mrs. Lindy Lindberg and children also left for Denver and their return trip to Washington."

December 1960 "Mr. E.P. Van Matre and son, Lee Van Matre of Seedro Wooley, Washington left a week ago Monday for their home after spending the Thanksgiving holidays with teh Willard Gormans and other relation and friends in and around Yuma. Mr. Van Matre is the father of Mrs. Willard Gorman.

Lynn V. Van Matre, son of John and Elizabeth Van Matre, was born near Hastings, March 15, 1900, and passed away July 12, 1974 at Hastings, at the age of 74 years.

He came to Furnas County when about six years of age where he grew up and attended District No. 10. He helped his father farm for a number of years. On February 11, 1920, he was united in marriage to Nellie M. Quinn and to this union seven children were born, two of whom died in infancy. He farmed for about ten years and then went into the blacksmith business for about forty years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, two sisters and four grandchildren.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Nellie; four daughters and on son, Ardyth Thorne of Lebanon, Oregon, Zona Longsine of Papillion, Wayne Van Matre of Gordon, Marvel Fisher of St. Paul and Phyllis Weber of Lebanon, Oregon; four sons-in-law; one daughter-in-law; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Lillie La Valley of Portland, Oregon; brother, Lloyd Van Matre and wife of Grand Junction, Colorado; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was a devoted husband father and was always ready to lend a helping hand to a friend in need.

Funeral services were conducted at Mitchell Funeral Home, Oxford, July 15, 1974, with Rev. Marvin Coffey and Rev. John Akers officiating. Music was furnished by Richard York and Beulah Fish. Pallbearers were Emery Quinn, George Quinn, Floyd Quinn, Dale Van Matre and John Quinn. Interment was in the Oxford Cemetery with Mitchell Funeral Home, Oxford, directing arrangements.
 

FindAGrave says Wayne Wesley Van Matre was born July 17, 1926 in Eckley, and died July 8, 2010 in Morristown, Tennessee.

In 1930 Lloyd is a blacksmith in St. Francis, Kansas, with Nellie M. 28, Ardyth M. 7, Zora B., 5, Wayne W. 3, and Marvel J. six months - it said all were born in Nebraska.

The death of Mrs. Anna L. Banks, daughter of pioneer parents, and a native of Webster County, occurred at her home in Blue Hill Friday evening. She had been ill since last September but preceding a stroke she suffered early Thursday, was able to be up and around her home.

Funeral services were held at the Blue Hill Methodist Church Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm with the Pastor, the Rev. C.M. McCorkie in charge. Music was furnished by a quartette composed of Misses Lolita Lacy, Elizabeth Zimmerman, Letha Stowers and Laura Waggoneer, with accompaniment by Mr. Bryon b. Vaughn.

Pallbearers were B.H. Waterbury, Glen Blauch, Henry Hartman, Earl Koons, Frank fish, and Theron Fish. Burial was in the family lot in Cloverton Cemetery.

Anna L. Banks was born September 17, 1875 in Webster County, Nebraska 6 1/2 miles south of Blue Hill. She was the second child of Mary Jane Garloch McHale and Patrick McHale. The parents homesteaded in Batin precinct in 1871. Mrs. Banks death occurred on August 15, 1941 at the age of 65 years, 10 months and 28 days.

On October 27, 1987, she was married to Justice Reuben Banks at Red Cloud Nebraska, and to this union ten children were born, eight of whom survive. Howard C. Banks passed away in infancy; a daughter Mrs. Blanche Hubbard died on August 3, 1930, and the husband and father preceded her in death on June 28, 1916.

The children are Clarence W. of Blue Hill, LaVerne of Kearney, Nebraska, Ralph and Ray of Venango, Nebraska, Mrs. Ethel Trout of Omaha, Mrs. Ruth Van Matre of Eckley. Colorado, Mrs. Edith Dooley of Golf Kansas, and Mrs Edna Schaffer of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. All were albe to be present at the funeral except for Mrs. Dooley.

Mrs. Banks is also survived by four brothers and three sisters, Martin McHale of Connecticut, Eugene Mchale of Mitchell, Nebraska, Edward McHale of Gothenburg, Nebraska, William McHale of Inavale, Mrs. Catherine Banks of Riverton, Mrs. Maggie Banks of Bladen, and Miss Adella McHale of Beatrice. There were also seventeen grandchildren.

The last twenty years of Mrs. Bank's life was spent in Blue Hill. She was a life-long member of the Blue Hill Methodist Church and devoted much of heer time during heer active years in the work of the church.
 

Gerald LeRoy MURROW  was born about 1907 in Colorado.  He appeared in the census on 15 Apr 1910 in Vernon, Yuma County, Colorado.  He appeared in the census on 26 Mar 1920 in Vernon, Yuma County, Colorado.  He appeared in the census on 30 Apr 1930 in Mildred, Yuma County, Colorado.

 
 He died of ALS on 29 Apr 1973 in Mt. Vernon, Skagit County, Washington.  Parents: William Edward (Ed) MURROW and Edith Clair DICKSON.
Spouse: Leta Belle VANMATRE.      Gerald LeRoy MURROW and Leta Belle VANMATRE were married on 12 Apr 1932 in St. Francis, Cheyenne County, Kansas.

I found a 1930 census record showing a Florance VanMatre with her husband, Emery P. VanMatre, in the Happyville, Yuma, Colorado index. She was born in Nebraska in 1896 (age 34 in census record). The following children were listed: Lee V, Lena Belle, Laura L, Elizabeth E, Dortha D, Luella R and Eva May. I also found a death record for Emery Pearl VanMatre, (10/23/1893 - 04/02/1973) in Sadro Woolley, Washington. I don't know for certain that this is the same VanMatre family, but I suspect that it is. Prior to living in Yuma County, Colorado, I believe that this family lived in Nebraska. I am seeking more information, especially on Elizabeth E VanMatre. I'm at a dead end on this so all information would be appreciated.

  2000 Read your post with interest because I have a grandfather named John Wesley VAN MATRE, b. 9 Jan 1862 place unknown, d. 6 Dec. 1942 Yuma CO (according to family Bible), m. Elizabeth Katharine Adkins in 1882 (she born 12 June 1861 in Harford, Mason Co., WV). They had 11 children, the fourth of which (Oakley Frank) was my grandfather. Let's compare notes. Memory by Nephew's Wife .... Edna Reeves VanMatre (Mrs. Homer VanMatre) writes -----

Homer and Silas VanMatre each owned a farm in Missouri, as well as a partnership in a sawmill.  They lived in a swampy area around Poplar Bluff, and were flooded out at least once a year by the Great Muddy, the Mississippi River.

Some of the farmers in the area had to build walks, on stilts, in order to walk to the barns to care for the livestock during high waters.  False floors were built in the mills so they could operate during the flooding season.  Drainage ditches were not built in that area during that period of time.

Silas and family came to Colorado around 1914.  They settled in the Las Animas area but didn't remain long before returning to Missouri.  However, ill health in the family brought a move to eastern Oklahoma where they farmed a few years before they again returned to Colorado.  This time they settled in the Hoehne area.  They developed a very successful farming operation there so they added to their holdings by purchasing good farm land in the Tyrone, Colorado ("Yetta" at that time), area.  One of Silas' grandsons is still operating one of the family farms.

 Daughter-in-law, ....Pat (Mrs. George VanMatre) has written our family records pages and also told us that Silas farmed and had worked in the coal mines, sometimes.

Niece, ....Alma VanMatre Dickinson wrote in a letter, May 21, 1981:.... Uncle Silas and his family raised Pinto beans.  We raised cane and made sorghum molasses.  Uncle Silas and his family would visit each fall and we would trade sorghum for Pinto Beans.

Great-nephew,.... Horace VanMatre remembers his Uncle Silas as a friendly uncle that brought stories of the west and especially of Colorado in the early 1900's.  They were welcomed visitors and would also recall seeing the one hundred pound sacks of Pinto beans that his family received.  He remembers, also, when his family lived near Poplar Bluff, MO. when the Black River would flood their farm.  Once, they moved the furniture to the upstairs in the house and rowed boats through the downstairs doors.  As a youngster he enjoyed the adventure but his mother didn't share his idea of "fun".

Eula Van Matre Gets Divorce Eula Van Matre of Greeley had the matter of, the legality been granted final divorce decree  from Robert H. Van Matre on grounds   of non-support. She was represented  by E. H. Houtchens.
