Died in Greeley; Was Homesteader South of Haxtun

Peter Nordholm, an early resident of the Haxtun territory, passed away Wednesday morning in Greeley at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Andrew Swanson. He was 79 years of age.

Mr. Nordholm homesteaded south of Haxtun, and for a number of years he was a farmer in that community. In late years he had lived with Mr. and Mrs. Swanson and moved with them to Greeley about four years ago.

Four children survive: Andrew of Haxtun, John of Crook, Mrs. Andrew Swanson of Greeley and Elmer of Eckley.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock from the Elim Lutheran Church in Haxtun. Burial will be in the Bryant cemetery.

Peter Nordholm was born at Kristshamstads Lan, Sweden, on September 23, 1859. He grew to manhood in the land of his birth, where he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church of Sweden. In 1882 he came to American, coming first to Fremont, Nebraska, where he lived for two or three years. He came to Colorado about 1885 and homesteaded in the Bryant community, about 17 miles south of Haxtun. Here he lived until 1932, when he moved to Haxtun. In September, 1936, he moved to Greeley, where he made his home until his death. Since 1932 he had lived with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Swanson.

Mr. Nordholm was married on December 22, 1880 (records say 1889)  to Miss Betty Pearson, at Bryant, Colorado. To this union were born three sons and a daughter, all of whom survive. They are Andrew Nordholm of Haxtun, John Nordholm of Iliff, Elmer Nordholm of Eckley, and Mrs. Andrew Swanson of Greeley. Fifteen grandchildren and one great grandchild, and a brother, August Peterson of Waterville, Kansas, also survive. He was preceded in death by his wife who passed away at Haxtun in 1934 and a foster-son who died two years ago.

Mr. Nordholm was engaged in farming all his life, nearly 50 years of which was spent in the Bryant community. He was always an industrious and highly respected member of the community in which he lived. He directed the building of the Bryant church and was very active in Farmers’ Union circles. He was for many years a member of Elim Lutheran church of Haxtun and at the time of his death held membership in Immanuel Lutheran Church of Greeley.

Death came suddenly to Peter Nordholm as he was doing his daily work, for he did not want to retire from active work as long as strength permitted. He and his son-in-law were cutting wood on a farm a few miles from Greeley, and had just begun their work on Wednesday morning, November 16th, when during a pause in his labors, while he had sat down for a brief rest, the angel of death came suddenly, and our aged friend entered into the eternal rest. It is our hope, our comfort, our trust that he rests “Safe in the Arms of Jesus.” Peace be to the memory of Peter Nordholm!

Funeral services were held at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Greeley, on Friday afternoon, November 18, and at Elim Lutheran Church, Haxtun, on the following afternoon. The body was laid to rest in the Bryant cemetery. Rev. R.E. Carlson of Greeley conducted the services.

In 1900 Yuma County Peter and Bettey have Andrew, 12, Annie 9, John P. 7, and Elmer 5.

Andrew E. Nordholm registered for WWI in Haxtun, saying he was born October 4, 1886 in Guntburg, Sweden, and was naturalized.

In 1920 Rockland, Logan County Peter and Bettey are with Andrew and Anna Swanson.
