1906 Belleville, Kansas "Monday morning of this week Belleville and community were terribly shocked by the news
from Rocky Ford Colorado that Will Stenson was dead. Although he had been sick with typhoid fever for a long time for
ten weeks he had been in a hospital, yet only a few days ago word came that he seemed to be getting along alright and
his physician pronounced him oat of danger.
His death came suddenly, caused by heart failure. The corpse accompanied by his wife and little daughter Mildred,
and his brothers in-law, Otto and Ed Helwick and Mrs. James Helwick arrived here Tuesday on No. 6 and funeral services
conducted by Rev. Stratton assisted by Rev. Holter, were held from the Methodist church Wednesday.
Interment was made in the Belleville cemetery.
Old neighbors, J. O. Sanford of Republic, Bert and Horace Wilkes, D. A. Zech, J. D. Wilkie and Mr. Coons
acted as pall bearers.
Mr. Stenson was a native of Republic county, when but a boy he moved here with his parents from Illinois and
with the exceptions of a few years spent in Allen county he has resided on a farm between here and Republic City.
Seven years ago he was married to Miss Callie Helwick and to this union two children were born, a son and a daughter,
but the boy died in infancy, Mrs. Stenson being very poorly for the past year.
In June Mr. Stenson rented his farm and started to Wyoming with her in hopes that a higher altitude might prove
beneficial to her health. They had only reached Rocky Ford, Colorado, and were visiting her parents when Mr. Stenson
was taken sick with typhoid fever which caused his death on Sunday, September 22,
The deceased was almost 40 years old. he was a conservative man and had but little to say but no man ever lived who
was more respected and loved by his neighbors than was Will Stenson. In 1890 he was converted and joined the Baptist
church of which he remained a faithful member until death.
Beside the entire community of friends he leaves an aged mother in Missouri, a widow and little daughter,
four brothers and one sister, Mrs. J. D. Kephart, of Republic, to mourn their loss. "

C. W. Smith, a farmer living north of Otis, was fatally injured in a fall Saturday evening as he stepped off a moving truck a short distance from his home. His neck was broken and he died almost instantly. The deceased had been in Yuma during the afternoon and was riding home with a neighbor. He was well known here having numerous relatives who reside in and around Yuma.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church in Yuma Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. Hugh Neville officiating, and interment was made at the Yuma cemetery.
Charles Wesley Smith was born in Yuma September 2, 1864 and died February 28, 1933 at the age of 68 years, 4 months, and 26 days.
Very early in life he moved with his parents to Illinois and after his father's death, when he was but a boy of 12 years, he came with his mother to Kansas and settled in Phillips county. Here he grew to manhood and gave his life to farming. On September 1, 1895 he was married to Mrs. Ora M. Ralston of Republican City, Nebraska and to this union were born eleven children, two of whom, Mary Edith and Edwin Guy, died in childhood, the former by accidental death at 7 years of age.
Besides his wife, the following are left to mourn their great loss:
Five daughters, Mrs. Frank Rumley, Mrs. ____ Ishmael, Mrs. Floyd Majors, Mrs. Guy Arnold, and Mrs. C. R. Majors, all of Yuma; four sons - two of whom are married and live at Otis namely Elmer and Fred, and Earl and Ernest who live at home with their mother. In addition to these he leaves twenty-five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, a step-daughter, Mrs. Cashes Dockum of Pasadena, California; two sisters, Mrs. James Muir of Republican, Nebraska and Mrs. Geo. Waggoner of Beloit, Kansas,; and two brothers, Isaac Smith of Republican, Nebraska, and Samuel Smith of Keenan, Oklahoma. These, with a host of friends and other relatives deeply feel the tragic suddenness of his death and mourn the loss of a loving husband, father, and friend.
Mr. Smith was a very good farmer and a very fine friend, cheerful under difficulties, kind and sympathetic to all. He was highly respected by all who knew him whether in Kansas, Oklahoma, or in Colorado, in which states he spent most of his long life. Thirteen years ago he moved to Colorado and settled north of Yuma and after three years moved to the farm north of Otis where he was living at the time of his death. The deepest sympathy of the whole community is accorded the bereaved in their great loss.
