Schulke sisters - Anna, Otillde, and , Alvin


February 1917 "Mrs. C. A. Schulke and little son, Alvin, left Monday evening for their home near Naponee, Nebraska. They had spent a month visiting Mrs. Schulkes three daughters, Mesdames Ed Bascue, Bluford Starkey and Harry Wistrand, who reside twenty miles northwest of Wray."

"The Rev. and Mrs. J. B. Starkey were honored by their sons and daughters December 10 in wedding anniversary. The Starkeys were married in Phillips county, Kansas, and came to Medford in 1924. Joining in celebration of the couple's 50th anniversary are Clarence Starkey, Medford; Mrs. Thomas Harger, Central Point; the Rev. Roy Starkey, Portland; Milton Starkey, Salem, and Mrs. James Hoskms, Lincoln, Neb. Out-of-town guests included Mr. and Mrs. Carl Schulke and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Schulke, and Mr. and Mrs. Francis Hecht, all of Silverton; Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Colley, Salem; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brown, Kirby and Mr. and Mrs. Will Lowe, Riverside, Calif.
The honored couple received many congratulatory cards and gifts."

"Albert Fredrick Schulke (1860-1950) came from the Landeck area in Germany to America via Chicago in 1879. He worked to bring his father Karl Edmond and mother Anna, his brothers: Karl August, Rudolph, Herman Theordore, Ernest and Edmond. He also brought his future wife Pauline Schultz, her sister Theresa and neice/cousin Mathilde Lange.
Albert married Pauine Schultz in 1880. Then the whole family, except for Pauline's sister Theresa (who married a Lawrence) stayed in Chicago, went to Naponee, Nebraska and settled there. "

In 1900 Phillips County, Kansas, Charles A. Schulke born July 1864 in Germany, married 12 years to Frona M June 1870, Illinois. Anna A. July 1889, Ottilie E., Frona October 1892, Edmond June 1895 - all these kids born in Nebraska, Carl July 1896, and Mary October 1899 in Kansas

In 1900 Franklin County, Nebraska, Harry W. Wistrand is 6, with mother Osie C. Blackburn April 1869 Norway and he husband Elmer Nov 1858 Blackburn, married five years.
Osie Christina Blackburn 1870-1943 is buried in Phillips County, Kansas, # 71147455


Osie Christinia Nybroe was born near Christinia, Norway, April 20, 1870, and departed this life February 16,1943, at the age of 72 years, nine months and 27 days.

She came to the United States when a small child with her parents who located near Athens, Ill., later they moved to Franklin County,Nebraska. In the year 1893 she was united in marriage to Peter William Wistrand. To this union one son was born, Harry W. Wistrand, of Franklin, Nebraska.

On March 2, 1895, she was married to Augustus Elmer Blackburn and to this union seven children were born: Ernest Blackburn of Naponee, Nebr., Edith Akers of Naponee, Cynthia Blackburn of Larned, Kansas, Lena Gibson of Athol, Kansas, Lester Blackburn who preceded her in death two years ago, Emmett and Elden who died in infancy.

She is survived by her husband, two sons, three daughters, sixteen grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Anna Holland of Springfield, Ill., two brothers, John Nybroe of Naponee and Ole Nybroe of Aliceville, Kansas, a number of other relatives and many friends.

Harry W. Wistrand proved up 160 acres in 17 and 20, 4N 43W in 1920.

Harry William Wistrand registered for WWI with an Alvin Colorado address, farming with a wife. He was born March 5, 1894 at Bloomington, Nebraska.

March 1919 "Charles Woody and Harry Wistrand went Friday by automobile to Sterling on land business. While in Sterling Mr. Woody picked out a piece of land thirty-five miles from Wray, upon which he has made a homestead filing."

Harry was in the Phillips County, Kansas census in 1920, 25, with Frona P. 27 born iNebraska, and Audra M. 1 born in Colorado.

In 1930 Phillips County, Kansas, Harry is 36, Frona 37, Audra 11, Robert 9, and Phyllis 7.

In 1940 Franklin County, Nebraska, Harry is 46, Frona 47, runnin a general store., Robert 19, and Phyllis 17.

But # 143298030 has Frona P. Wistrand 1892-1982.

Harry W. 1894-1980 is also in Franklin County # 143298031.

Robert W. Wistrand 1920-2007 is buried in Franklin # 132769321.


Audra Marvene Wistrand was born May 19, 1918 at Wray to Hary W. WIstrand and Frona P. Schulke, dying as Audra Marvene Copley in February 8, 2000.

Riverton resident Audra M. (Wistrand) Copley, 81, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at her home. Services are 2 p.m. Friday at the Christian Fellowship Evangelical Free Church in Franklin with the Revs. Frank Alexander, Dwain Fowler and Jim Hossler officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Franklin. Visitation is 1 p.m. until services Friday at the church. Hutchins Funeral Home of Franklin is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Copley was born May 19, 1918, to Harry and Frona (Schulke) Wistrand near Wray, Colo. She attended rural Griffin school in Phillips County, Kan., and graduated from Naponee High School in 1936. She then attended teachers training at Kearney Teacher's College. She taught school at Simmons School in Phillips County, Liberty School in Smith County, Kan., and District No. 34 in Franklin County. On April 9, 1939, she married Chris C. Copley in Nelson. He preceded her in death on May 13, 1992.
She was a member of the Christian Fellowship Evangelical Free Church, the Fellowship Christian Women's Ministry, Extension Club and Arts Group, all in Franklin. She also served on the church board, museum board and as a deaconess.
Survivors are two daughters, JoAnn Hossler of Dodge City, Kan., and Ruth Hostetler of Indianapolis, Ind.; two sons, James of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Paul of Riverton; one brother, Robert of Franklin; one sister, Phyllis Smith of Canyon City, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by one brother.

Phyllis Mary Wistrand was born August 19, 1922, dying Sept 25, 2002 as Phyllis Smith.



Phyllis Mary Smith - August 19, 1922- September 30, 2002 is buried in Canon City, # 105697448, on the same stone as Melford and son Stephen.

Melford I. Smith, 89, passed away August 23, 2013 in Canon City, CO. The son of Arthur W. and Ada (Haines) Smith, he was born December 30, 1923, in Franklin County Nebraska. Melford was united in marriage to Phyllis Wistrand on January 28, 1945. He worked in heavy construction, building roads, bridges, and irrigation ditches in Nebraska. Later, Melford worked as an Inspector for the Army Corps of Engineers on power lines throughout Colorado. He also worked on the construction of the Turquoise Lake Dam near Leadville, and the Trinidad Dam in southern Colorado.

In 1983, Melford retired and moved to Canon City. He enjoyed RVing, camping, fishing, and 4-wheeling in his 1966 Ford Bronco, aka "Trusty Rusty". He also enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and was an avid reader of westerns by Zane Grey and Louis L'Amour.

Mr. Smith is survived by his daughters, Vicky (Jim) Murphy of Canon City, and Sherry (Tim) Eager of Cheyenne, WY; grandchildren, Sean (Stacy) Murphy of Canon City, Mindy Murphy of Denver, Kandi (Philip) Busby of Loveland, CO, Dee Anne Eager of Cheyenne, WY, Caitlin (Dustin) Alexander of Littleton, CO, Jared Murphy of Missoula, MT, and Tyson (May) Eager of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; and great grandchildren, Seth and Lorelai Murphy, Elum Busby, Aspen and Malakai Murphy, Calvin Alexander, and Eli Cortes (Eager). He is also survived by his brother, Everett Smith of Canon City; sister, Rosalie (Pat) Schachterle of Vancouver, WA; and sister-in-law, Mary Kay Smith of Shawnee Mission, KS.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Phyllis; son, Steven Melford Smith; his parents; sister, Lydia Whyman; brother, Newton Smith; and sister-in-law, Ione Smith.

Visitation will be from 9:00 until 10:00 a.m., prior to Funeral Service at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at the Holt Chapel of the Garden in Canon City. Interment will follow at Lakeside Cemetery. # 116281507.

OTTILIA

Edward F. Bascue proved up 320 acres in 33, 4N 43W and 4, 3N 43W in 1916.

Eagle Colorado, September 1920 "0. C. Sheridan returned last Friday from a short business trip to Wray, his former home, being accompanied to Eagle by Bab Southwell of Wray and Ed Bascue of Laird, Colo., and during their short stay here Mr. Bascue became the owner of the Sheridan pool hall and residence property, to take possession within thirty days. Mr. Sheridan returned to the eastern slope with the two gentlemen, but is expected back in a few days."
September 1920 "D. E. Roberts came in last Friday from Wray, Colo., to run the pool hall recently purchased by Ed Bascue until the latter gets here to run it himself."

March 30, 1922 "Edith Way Bascue was born in Laird, Colo., March 13, 1922, and died March 29, 1922, about 8 a. m., aged 16 days. She leaves to mourn her departure her father, Edward Bascue, her mother, Ottilia Bascue, and seven brothers and sisters, all of whom are still at home. The funeral services were conducted at Laird on March 29 at 3 p. m., by Rev. H. J. Brown, pastor of the Wray Nazarene church. The little body was laid to rest in the Grandview cemetery at Wray, in a very beautiful casket bearing tho words "Our darling." Mr. and Mrs. Bascue desire to thank the many friends for their kindness and sympathy shown the family during their bereavement."

Ottilia E. Bascue, born about 1891, died March 25, 1965 in Marion County, Oregon.
She's buried in Salem # 65575569, with Edward Franklin Bascue 1883-1951.

Charlie Franklin Bascue is buried in Woodburn, Oregon "Charlie F. Bascue, 79, died Thursday, Jan. 14. He was born in Republican City, Neb. He moved in Silverton in 1934 and to Woodburn in 1977. He was a psychiatric aide at the state hospital. He was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his daughter Deloris Jones of Salem; brothers Forest of Salem, David of Anchorage, Alaska, Carl of Empire, Calif. and Wayne of Benkelman, Neb.; sisters Ruth Kirk and Darlene Helekson, both of Salem, and Eva Dahl of Gladstone; three grandchildren and one great-grandchildren. Services were 1 p.m. Saturday in Simon Funeral Chapel. Entombment was in Belle Passi Mausoluem."


EVA LOUISE DAHL died June 4 1995 in Oregon City, Oregon at age 78. She was born June 14, 1916, in Wray, Colo. She worked in clothing sales for Zukor. Her husband, Kenneth, died in 1987.

Wayne E. Bascue 1914-1990 is buried in Benkelman, Nebraska.
Surviving are her son, Al Sears of Gladstone; stepdaughter, Kathy Harting of Oregon City; stepson, John Dahl of Salem; sisters, Ruth Kirk and Darlene Hilickson, both of Salem; brothers, Carl Bascue of Modesto, Calif., and Dave Bascue of Salem; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.


Darlene died in July 2004 in Salem, Oregon
Darlene Marie Hellekson, born Darlene Marie Bascue, in Laird, Yuma County, Colorado, USA, on 21 JUL 1918. She was one of 12 children of Edward Franklin Bascue and Ottilla Louisa Schulke. Her siblings, from eldest to youngest, included Anna Bascue (1908-1911), Charles Franklin Bascue (1909-1988), Ruth Sophronia Bascue Kirk (1910-2005), Velda Victoria “Vick” Bascue Inglis (1912-1980), Wayne Edward Bascue (1914-1990), Eva Louise Bascue Dahl (1916-2005), Edith May Bascue (1922-1922), Forest Westley Bascue (1920-1991), Sylvia B Bascue (1923-1977), Carl Lyle Bascue (1926-2007), and David Lee Bascue (1931-2003). She outlived all but one of her siblings, Carl, who passed in 2007.

Her first marriage was to Arthur Ellsworth Jones (1911-1954), sometime between 1935-1937, of which all five of her children resulted in this union; Patricia Rae Jones, Shirley Luon Jones, George Aaron Jones, Judy Kay Jones, and Sherry Lee Jones.

Having lived and raised three out of her five children through the Great Depression, she was an expert gardener. Many of the fruits and vegetables for our families came from her very garden that was about the same size as her home. She did LOTS of canning and dehydrating of foods to make them last longer. I only wished I had paid closer attention or asked her more about it.

She remarried Helmer Julius Hellekson (1920-1980) in Stevenson, Washington, sometime before 1976.

Throughout her life she was a grandmother to 19 grandchildren; Robert L Oleman (1954-1965), Ronny L Oleman, Randal L Oleman, Wendell & Allen Jasmer Jr (1956-1956), Geraldine Jasmer, Gregory Jasmer, Susan Jones, Monica Jones, Michael Jones, Matthew Jones, Sharlene Jones, Richard Jones, Christine Copeland, Patrick Copeland, Karla Copeland, Darlene Brock, Shawn Heierman, and Danielle Heierman.

She lived long enough to meet, hold, and fall in love with six of her great-great grandchildren; Demitrius Lawrence Baker-Babson, Jaime Jasmer, Levi Jasmer, Katie Noel Beasley, Ian Tyler Sucich, and Sierra Lynn Murray.

Forest Wesley 1920-1991 is buried in Salem, Oregon # 65575570, with Olive 1922-2000.

Carl Lyle Bascue 1926-2007 is buried in Stanislaus County, California # 39433738.

ALVIN - just a visitor to Yuma County with his mother.

Alvin L. Schulke 1912-1996 is buried in Harlan County # 88673361.
"Former Naponee resident Alvin Lyle Schulke, 84, of Alma died Thursday, Nov. 21, 1996, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Alma with the Rev. Lyn Seiser officiating. Burial will be in Alma Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Banta-Torrey Funeral Home in Alma. Mr. Schulke was born June 14, 1912, to Charles August and Frona Marie (Finch) Schulke south of Republican City in Phillips County, Kan. He lived in northern Phillips County. He attended Red Top Rural School. In 1926 he moved with his family to Naponee. He graduated from Naponee High School in 1930. On May 28, 1935, he married Dena Margaret Walker in Franklin. They lived in Naponee for three years. In 1938 they moved to Alma. He was employed by Alter Lumber Co. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944-45 during World War II, serving in the European Theater. After his discharge from the Army, he was employed as Alma City Clerk. He semi-retired in 1980 and completely retired in 1982. He also operated the Schulke Nursery in Alma during the 1980s. He was a member of Alma United Methodist Church and Faye Cady American Legion Post No. 188 of Alma. He was a former member and master of the Harlan Lodge No. 116 A.F. & A.M. transferring membership to Melrose Lodge No. 60 A.F. & A.M. in Orleans after the Harlan Lodge closed. He also was a member of the Tehama Shrine in Hastings. Survivors are his wife; one son, Phil of Bedford, Texas; two daughters, Judy Krowley of Riverside, Calif., and Pat Holverson of Omaha; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and six sisters. "

CROWLEY, JUDITH Age 69, passed away on January 21, 2006 in La Jolla, CA. UCSD Medical Center, after a courageous battle with Leukemia. She was born 1936 in the small town of Naponee Nebraska to Dena Schulke and the late Alvin Schulke. Judy grew up in Alma NE and Phillipsburg KS on her grandparent's farm. She graduated from University of Nebraska at Kearney with a degree in Education, and began her teaching career in Omaha. Married in 1959 to James Crowley of Kearney, together they traveled within the Air force for 20 years with the opportunity to be stationed in many exciting countries and finally settling in Riverside, California in 1979. She continued to teach throughout their travels in several Department of Defense Schools. In 1980 she began teaching for Garden Elementary School in Riverside, where her kind and loving teaching skills educated the minds of many children over the next 16 years.
Widowed in 1999, she became very active in her local church, Highgrove United Methodist, and continued to substitute teach for the Riverside Unified School District. This past year she enjoyed the birth and life of her first granddaughter.
Judy is survived by her mother, Dena Schulke; her brother, Phillip Lyle Schulke; her daughter, Deidre Crowley Gale and husband Arick Gale; and her beloved granddaughter, Jaimie Skye Gale. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
In addition to her husband and father, she was preceded in death by her sister Patricia Holverson and her brother-in-law Winston Holverson.
Funeral services for Judith Crowley will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 30 at Highgrove United Methodist Church, Cemetery services at Riverside National Cemetery to follow. # 72626620.
