William and Mary (Stults) Courtney
In 1880 Macoupin County, Illinois, W. H. and Mary Courtney are
both 30, with E. E. 12, J.W. 8, Charlie 5, "Olie" 3 and Nora three months.
May 13, 1899 "W. H. Courtney will move into his new possession, the Cheney residence, about
June 1."
"At 5:30 o'clock Friday morning, May 12, 1899, W. H. Courtney quietly passed to his final
rest. Death came to his relief after a long siege of suffering. The funeral services will be
held at the Presbyterian church at 2 p.m. today."
May 20, 1899 " The funeral services over the remains of W. H. Courtney were held at the Presbyterian church
last Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Smith conducted the ceremony in the presence of a
large number of the friends of the family. The remains were taken to the cemetery and consigned
to the grave. William Henry Courtney was born in Green county, Illinois, December 1, 1844. In 1868, he moved
to Macoupin county, where he married Miss Mary Stults, and they resided there until 1884,
when they moved to Hamilton county, Nebraska. In the spring of 1886 they came to Wray, and
have made this their home ever since. The deceased leaves a loving wife and seven children
to mourn his departure.

Elmer Courtney married Gussie Harp, 28, on July 30, 1916 in Wray.
August 3, 1916 "Rev. Rice was called upon to perform the
ceremony that joined in wedlock Elmer Gray Courtney and
Miss Gussie Harp. These young people have gone to the mountains
to spend a few weeks. And again are two lives united to whom the
best wishes of the community go."
In 1920 Wray, Ray is a lunber helper, 29, with Gussie 29 Arkansas, Helen M. 2 and Everett E. eight months. Mary, mother 69 is with them.
In 1930 Wray, E. Wray and Gussie are both 40, with M. Helen 12 and John Wray 1. Mother Mary, 80 is still with them.

John Wray Courtney was born on May 19, 1928 in Wray, Colorado to Elmer Wray and Gussie (Harp) Courtney. John passed away peacefully in his own home on June 1, 2012, with his beloved wife of 63 years by his side and next door to his birthplace. He was a lifelong resident of Wray. John's life was focused on family. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. When not working, he preferred family time to outside social activities.
Beginning as an elementary schooler, John was industrious in finding ways to help provide for his family, including digging and selling fish worms, collecting glass jugs, raising rabbits, and setting duck pins at the bowling alley. He worked through high school at ABC Cleaners, learning the dry cleaning trade. John earned his diploma with the Class of 1946 through the Yuma County High School in Wray. He enlisted in the Marine Air Corps immediately following graduation, honoring a request by his father to finish high school. He was stationed in San Diego, California until his honorable discharge in 1947. Because the war was over, he was unable to fulfill his dream of becoming a pilot or serving overseas. John later joined the National Guard here in Wray and just missed being called to the Korean War.
John returned to Wray and resumed his employment with ABC Cleaners, which had been relocated to a new Quonset building on Grant Street. John married Mary Jacobson on February 20, 1949 in the old Methodist Church that burned down later that same year. John and Mary were blessed with four children, Joy Rae, Lea Ann, Mark Everett, and Julie Kay. From 1951 to 1953 John worked as bookkeeper and salesman for Massey Harris Implement Company and also did books for John's 66 Service Station. In 1954, John began a 35-year career with the City of Wray. He began as deputy city clerk in the old City Hall on the corner of 3rd and Adams. In his tenure with the City, he also served as City Clerk, City Manager, and Director of Health and Safety. He was a dedicated civil servant and felt privileged to play a role in multiple City improvement projects, including street paving with curb and gutter, development of seven flood control dams, Stalker Lake Dam, building the new "Roundhouse" City Hall, the industrial park, the hospital on Birch Street, water storage tanks and supply wells, the new library, swimming pool, and the lighted tower Christmas Tree. In addition, he served the Wray Community in volunteer efforts, including Red Cross Liaison for Servicemen, Emergency Medical Technician, Volunteer Fireman, and Emergency Ambulance Service.
John held great pride in being a Marine, a volunteer fireman, and the first EMT in Wray. He was also extremely proud that all four of his children earned college degrees.
Preceding John in death were his youngest daughter, Julie Kay Courtney; his parents; his older brother, Everett; his sisters, Helen (Harold) Cook and Leora (Pete) Thompson; brother-in-law, John Jacobson; nephew, Lyle Jacobson and niece, Barbara Moss.
Those left to mourn his passing include his wife Mary; his children, Joy Rae (Doug) Brophy, Lea Ann (Pete) Sullivan, Mark Everett (Shari) Courtney and daughter-in-love, Cynthia Mitchell; grandchildren, Erin (Joel) Palmer, Daniel (Becky) Brophy, Curtis (Kadra) Brophy, Lily and Patrick Sullivan and Matt and Andrea Courtney; great-grandchild, Jace Palmer; sister-in-law, Wanda Jacobson; dedicated care giver, Carol White and nieces and nephews.
Services were held Monday, June 4, 2012 at 2 p.m., at the First Christian Church with Steve Wynkoop officiating. Memorials can be made to the John W. Courtney for the City of Wray. Interment followed in the Grandview Cemetery.

April 29, 1976 "Sandy Christianson was married Sunday in Arvada. Dennis Herzbergs were among those from Cope who attended."
1978 "Dennis Christianson spent Thanksgiving in the home of his sister and family, the Jim WIlsons of Denver. Mrs. Wilson is the former Sandy Christianson."
1984 Sandra Wilson and Summer visited her mother, Mrs. Leona Christianson, over the weekend. They had dinner on Monday at DJ Cafe in Cope.
In 1984 The Wray singles hosted the Tri-County Singles Club, with a Halloween party at the Vernon School. Second
prize costumes were awarded to Leona Christianson and Leora Johnston. Their costumes were twin black cats.

Donald Wear Christianson was born on December 22, 1929 and passed away on October 6, 2015.Donald was the father of three children. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2015 at 10 a.m., at the Baucke Funeral Chapel in Yuma. Interment will follow in the Yuma Cemetery. Memorials are preferred. Baucke Funeral Home of Yuma, is in charge of arrangements.
Donald Wear Christianson was born to Ben and Peggy Christianson on December 22, 1929 in Denver, CO. At the age of 5 he moved to the Donald Ranch north of Cope, CO, homesteaded in 1912 by his aunt and uncle, Art and Mabe Donald, 30 miles south of Yuma.
Don graduated from Yuma High School in 1946, then attended the Colorado University Music School in Boulder. He returned to the Donald Ranch one year later and married [name omitted] in 1948. They had three children who were all raised on the Ranch and they were married for 32 years. In the 1950's he formed the Don Cristy Dance Band which allowed him to express his love of music to share with others, as well as giving him enjoyable breaks from ranch life. Don also enjoyed working with his hand, mainly with steel and wood, and later with stained glass. He moved to Denver in the mid-1970's where he was a free-lance photographer for Channel 7 news. He also took up flying again which was another one of his passions. Years after he divorced, he later met a new partner, Babs Murphy, whom he spent 22 years with. Babs left this world in 2012 and Don then returned to Yuma to be closer to his family. Don had a good life and was fortunate to experience many things.
He leaves behind his three children, his five grandchildren, as well as his great-grandchildren, The Funeral Service was held on Thursday, October 8, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Baucke Funeral Chapel in Yuma, Colorado with Pastor [name omitted] officiating. Interment followed at the Yuma Cemetery. Baucke Funeral Home directed the service.

the first of the week visiting his sisters, Mrs. Bert Evans and Miss Nelle Haines.
Mr. Haines was up at Denver on legal business, and from there was going to Salt Lake City,

Nellie was born at Elmwood, Illinois to Moses Haynes and Sarah A. Washeler..
March 1907 "Bruce Wimmer, of Creston, Iowa, visited in this city a couple of days
the fore part of the week. He is a nephew of Mrs. O. A. Courtney and Mrs. A. R. Evans
and a cousin of Mrs. Letitia Scott and Mrs. Bullard. He went from here to Denver and from
there goes to Greeley to attend school."
July 1908 "Walter E. Haynes, who had been visiting his sisters Mrs. O. A. Courtney
and Mrs. A. R. Evans for about two weeks, left Saturday morning for Denver and from
there he goes to his home at Anita, Iowa."
April 1909 "Otis Courtney left Wednesday for Omaha where he will meet his
brother-in-law, Walter Haines of Creston, Iowa and together they will go on a three weeks
trip thru the states of North and South Dakota. Charley Courtney is doing the barber
act in his stead during his absence."
May 28, 1909 "O. A. Courtney left Tuesday with a carload of furniture
for his new home in South Dakota. Mrs. Courtney will accompany Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Evans,
who will make the trip overland."

September 10, 1909 " Born at Larimore, Iowa, August 31st to
Mr. and Mrs. Otis A. Courtney a girl. Their many friends in Wray will be
pleased as well as surprised. Mr. and Mrs. Courtney left last spring for South Dakota
where they have since made their home, having taken a homestead there."
In 1910 they're farming in Fall River County, South Dakota, Otis 33, Nellie 36, and
Francis M. newborn.
In 1920 Fall River County, Otis is farming, 45, born in Illinois,
Nelie E. 46, Frances 10 Iowa, Pauline M. 7, Genevieve H. 5, and Sarah L. 2 all born in South Dakota. Nelile's father Moses F. Haynes is 84, widowed, born in Maryland. Her sister May D. Haynes 41 is a teacher, single, born in Iowa.
May H. (Haynes) Overton 1878-1973 is buried in Chadron, Nebraska # 79717470.
She was the youngest child of Moses Haynes, a family of five daughters and one son. She had sisters Nell Courtney and Ida Evans who also lived the Oelrichs SD area. The story of her life is in Shadow of The Butte and I have two of her diary's, which are very interesting
Before her husband died in 1931 she was in an accident with him in which she was crippled and later developed Narcolepsy and Cataracts, she had nieces in Iowa so she went there to live and died maybe in the same county as she was born.

Sarah Laurie McHenry Billingsley was born to Otis Courtney and Nellie Haynes Courtney in Oelrichs, S.D. on Aug. 17, 1917. She passed away on Wednesday Aug. 16, 2006 at her daughter's home in Bodfish. She spent two years in the Skilled Nursing Facility in Mt. Mesa. She suffered from Parkinson's Disease.
In 1961 Sarah lost her first husband Harry McHenry. Soon after Harry's death she decided to go back to school to become a dental assistant. She then met Harry Billingsley at a church function. They fell in love and were married in Lancaster. Sarah belonged to the Ridgecrest Seventh-day Adventist Church for many years. She loved to teach Sabbath School to the kindergarten and primary age group.
Sarah loved to travel, hike and camp. When they were in their 60s Sarah and Harry along with daughter Joyce Wilcox, climber Mt. Whitney. Sarah also loved flowers. If you visited her you could always find a beautiful and colorful flower garden in her yard. She also loved to study the Bible, read, sew and crochet. In the summer she would can cherries, peaches and pears. She could bake the most mouth watering, delicious apple pies.
Sarah has been a resident of Kern River Valley for three years. She previously lived in Ridgecrest for over 50 years.
She is survived by her two daughters Joyce Wilcox and husband David, Judy Carson and husband Randy from Bodfish, 16 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
A gravesite service was held at Desert Memorial Park on Saturday Aug. 19. In lieu of flowers a memorial contribution can be made to Optimal Hospice.

They're in Denver in 1930, with Melvin 14, Frederick E. 12. Marie O. Poole is 19, herbert Poole 23, with newborn Roberta.
In 1940 Leroy, an iron worker, and Minnie have only Frederick, 21.
Harold D. Minor married Ethel M. Marsh April 5, 1925, recorded in Denver.
They divorced in Jefferson County in 1926, and Harold married Mae Axtell Ness August 5, 1928, recorded in Arapahoe County.
In 1930, on the same page as Hannibal, Harold is a laborer, 29, wtih Mae E. 21 Colorado, Bettie Lou nine months.
In 1940 Denver, Harold is a carpenter for a bread company, 34, Mae 32 a restaurant cook, with Betty Lou 10.
They're on the same census page as mother Grace and brother Paul.
In 1948 Denver, Harold and Mae live at 30 S. Utica. He is a contractor.
In 1959 Harold D. (Mae A.) is a carpenter for Mershon-Gimend Construction, livng at 60 S. Utica.
In 1971 Harold and Mae are still at 60 S. Utica, and he's still a caarpenter.

She married Ernest Edward Courtney March 28, 1894 in Wray.

June 2, 1899 "While returning from a visit to the bedside of Ed. Courtney,
who is afflicted with an attack of pneumonia, Dr. McGill and Rev. Graff met with a
serious accident which resulted in severe injury to both.
When they reached the Radner school house, tho team became unmanagable and ran away.
They ran into Chas. Graham's fence, a mile from the start. Both occupants jumped from
the buggy while tho horses were running. Rev. Graff fractured his left ankle,
while Dr. McGill sustained painful bruises but broke no bones. They were brought
home by Mr. Reese Davis, and Dr. McGill set and dressed tho wounded limb.
Rev. Graff at last report was resting easily. He is a member of the Masonic order,
and the members of the local lodge will care for him. The team was considerably
cut up by the barb wire."

"Earnest Edgar Courtney was born in Macoupin County Illinois Oct. 18, 1867
died at his late home in Wray Colorado Feb. 13, 1904 age 36 years
3 months and 25 days. He spent the most of his life in Illinois with his
parents coming to Wray Colorado April 10, 1886. Here he married
Gertrude Cunningham, and to this union one child was born.
About six years ago began the illness that resulted in his death.
For a year past the deceased has been in constantly failing health
at times suffering intensely. In the midst of his suffering he
was patient and resigned though hopeful of return cf health.
The end came peacefully at about 2 o'clock Saturday morning.
Death came and took away the spirit leaving only the clay casket.
The deceased was characterized as one of good morals and uprightness. He
affiliated himself with the local organization of Independent Order of
Odd Fellows in which he was in good standing at the time of his death.
The vacant chair the silent voice the faded countenance speak to us of death.
May we find the life in the Christ who is the conqueror of death.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday Febr. 14 at the M. E.
church conducted by the pastor C. W. Cunningham assisted by Rev. G. C. Johnson
of the Christian Church. The body was laid to rest in Grand View Cemetery
by the local organization of the I.O.O.F.

regret at the sudden death" of Ernest E. Courtney, son of neighbor Mary
Courtney, brother to neighbors Otis and Charles Courtney, husband to Gertrude

Cora proved up two quarters in 11, 3N 45W in 1916. Witnesses were
George and William Rose, Otto B. Finn, and Clyde E. Cunningham, all of Wray.
1905 Mrs. Gertrude Courtney, who has been up at Julesburg with her
sister, Miss Rola Cunningham, for some time returned to Wray last Saturday and
will remain here. Mrs. Courtney had been quite ill for some time, and
desired to be at home
1909 she was assisting in the Sisson Clothing Co. store a portion of the
week.
In 1910 Denver Gertrude, clerking in a store has "H. Earl" 14, and C Rola and
Minnie, both teachers, are living with her.
1912 Earl Courtney, who has been attending the Manuel (sic) Training School
in Denver the past two years, came down Sunday to spend the summer vacation.
Earl will be with his mother, Mrs. Gertrude Courtney, at her claim northwest of
town.
1912 Ernest Weatherfield was a Wray visitor Saturday, from his ranch
northwest. He was aconpanied by his sister-in-law, Mrs. Gertrude Courtney,
from her claim near the Weatherfield ranh.

1917 Earl Courtney returned Sunday afternoon to Denver after visiting his
mother and grandmother, Mrs. Gertrude Courtney and Mrs. Rebecca Cunningham from
Friday until Sunday.

the time. - so he very well could have been in Casper in the 1920's

first married at age 20, is married to Gertrude, 55, born in Indiana. No
occupation listed for either.
The 1934 Casper directory has a Chas. H. Allerton (Gertrude) rancher, living
at 1405 E 2d. and Rebecca J. Cunningham (wid Wm. W) at the same address.
In 1940 Casper Gertrude Allerton, widowed, is with her mother Rebecca.
Gertrude, sharing a stone with her mother Rebecca Jane Cunningham, is buried in Casper "was a Casper, Wyoming resident since 1932 and had previously lived in Wray and Denver, Colorado. Mrs. Allerton had been ill since last September and was hospitalized for some time in November. She had been a member of the Rebekah lodge of Wray, CO for 47 years. She was a member of Fort Casper Chapter No 4, O.E.S., and a lifelong member of the Methodist church. She was preceded in death by her son, Earl Courtney Allerton, 20 years ago;by a sister, Minnie Cunningham of Casper, and by two brothers, Clyde Cunningham of Casper and C. C. Cunningham of Wray, CO."

In 1930 William is farming in north Yuma County, with Brown and Brophy as neightbers. He's 46, married to Effie m. 32 born in Colorady, with mary M. 8, Mable 6, William H. 4, and Vetty L. nine months.
In 1940 Wray, on South Railway Street, Effie is 42, with William H. 14, Betty Lee 10, James E. 7, adn Norma L.2.
William is buried in Wray 1883-1949 # 17097421.

Betty Lee (Courtney) Endicott was born June 16, 1929 in Wray, Colorado, the daughter of William H. and Effie (Maxwell) Courtney and passed away in Seward, Nebraska on November 25, 2011 at the age of 82 years, 5 months, 9 days. Betty attended school in Wray, Colorado. On September 14, 1946, Betty was united in marriage to Russell Nelson Endicott, Jr. in St. Francis, Kansas. Their marriage was blessed with five children, Donald, Linda, Richard, Judy and Kelly. The Endicott family moved to Seward in 1954 and Russ and Betty were the owners of Doc's IGA, Russ's ShurSave and Pac N Save, all in Seward. Betty was a 5o plus year member of the Seward United Methodist Church. Other memberships included Seward VFW Post No. 4755 Auxiliary and a proud member of the "E.L.K." Club and the "M.E.L.D." Club.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Russ Endicott in 2006; her son-in-law, Jim Sommerfeld; brother, William Courtney; three sisters, Mary Cunningham, Mabel Middleton and Norma Rolfsmeier; two grandchildren, Courtney Endicott and Charles Endicott.
Betty is survived by her children and their spouses, Donald and Nancy Endicott of Wayne, Linda and Steve Schmidt of Lincoln, Richard and Connie Endicott of Seward, Judy Sommerfeld of Seward, Kelly and Jim Dingwell of Lincoln; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, James and Willie Courtney of Laird, CO; sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Robert Yates of Lincoln; cousins and a host of friends.

JAMES ;JIM' E. COURTNEY, 87 born May 30, 1932 to William Henry and Effie Marie (Maxwell) Courtney in Wray, Colorado. He passed away at the Wray Community District Hospital in Wray, Colorado on February 4, 2020.
Visitation will be Tuesday, February 11, 2020 from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Schmidt-Jones Funeral Home in Wray, Colorado.
A Funeral service will be held at the Wray United Methodist Church in Wray, Colorado, on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at 10:00 a.m.
Interment will be held in the Grandview Cemetery in Wray, Colorado following services.
Memorials may be made to the (VFW) Veterans Foreign War.

"Janice Darlene (Courtney) Yates was born April 30, 1941 in Wray, Colorado to William H. and Effie (Maxwell) Courtney and passed away on September 6, 2012 at her home in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 71 years, 4 months, 7 days. Janice was a 1959 graduate of North High School in Denver, Colorado. She was united in marriage to Robert Lee Yates on July 19, 1964 at the Methodist Church in Seward, Nebraska. Janice helped with the Junior High MYF and attended the United Methodist Church. Janice was employed with Kolterman Ben Franklin in Seward and after moving to Lincoln, in 1965, she was employed at the Ben Franklin there. Janice was a longtime babysitter and cared for 96 children in the course of her years of childcare.
Janice is preceded in death by her parents, William and Effie Courtney; her brother and sister-in-law, William and Fern Courtney; four sisters, Mary Cunningham, Mabel Middleton, Norma Rolfsmeier, Betty and her husband, Russ Endicott.
Janice is survived by her husband, Robert L. "Bob" Yates, Lincoln; brother and sister-in-law, James and Willie Courtney, Laird, CO; brothers-in-law and wives, Dean and Marlene Yates, Seward, Dale and Carolyn Yates, David City; brother-in-law, Ben Rolfsmeier, Seward; numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews and a host of friends. "
