Ed Deterts , Vernon


"Eert Jakob" Deterts and Buske Wietsher Stekker married in uma COUnty on June 30, 1913.

December 4, 1958 "Ed Deterts, widely known retired farmer and operator of the meat processing department at the Wray Food Bank until a few months ago, died at his home Sunday at the age of 72 years, four months and 25 days. Funeral services for Mr. Deterts were held at the Presbyterian church in Wray at 1:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Robert Bill. Interment followed at Grandview cemetery.
Mr. Deterts was born July 5, 1886, to Detert and Elizabeth Deterts, the youngest of four children. He died November 30, 1958. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
He and his wife-to-be came to the United States from Germany on June 14, 1913. He was married to Geska Stekker on July 5, 1913. They made their home at Vernon and lived there until moving into Wray ten years ago.
Four sons and three daughters were born to them. Surviving him are his wife; his children, Detert Jacob of Wray, Jacob Herman of Denver, George of Denver, Eert Jacob of Wray, Louise Annette Brower of Yuma, Anna Engel of Vernon and Helen Marie Brown of Wray; and six grandchildren."

DETERT

"Funeral services are being held today, Thursday November 7, 1974 at 1:30 p.m. for D. J. Deterts, brother of Mrs. Pat Brower.
He passed away Sunday evening, after an illness of several months.
He is survived by his wife, his mother, Mrs. Grace Deterts, brother George Deterts, Denver, sisters Mrs. Bob Brown of Wray and Mrs. Bob Brower of Yuma, and other relatives."


LOUISE

Louise is buried in Yuma 1919 # 101358772, "wife of Adrian Franklin Brower."

JACOB

"Jacob H. Deterts, technician 4th grade, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Deterts of Vernon, has been helping to push the Nazis out of Italy. Jake enlisted in the U. S. Army September 23, 1941. Leaving Denver he began a series of assignments which took him pretty well over the country. He went to Fort Bliss, then to Fort Riley for 3 months, then back to Fort Bliss and on to Indio, Calif; from there he was shipped to Fort Knox, Ky. for 13 weeks of schooling, back to Indio, Calif., and finally to Camp A. P. Hill in Virginia. His outfit sailed from New York and landed in Africa on Christmas eve 1942. He participated in the African campaign, then went on to Sicily and then Italy. T-4 Deterts is still in Italy with the driving sth army and at the present time is a “long ways north of Rome” according to his last letter. Veteran of three major war theaters Jake is a member of the mechanized cavalry."

May 1950 "Jacob H. Detcrts, formerly of this locality, suffered a broken hip on Tuesday of last week when he was hit by a rolling log at the saw mill he operates at Dillon. He was hospitalized at the Ft.« Logan Veteran’s hospital. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Deterts, and other members of the Deterts family visited him at the hospital Sunday."

HELEN

"Miss Helen Deterts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Deterts of Vernon, became the bride of Robert E. Brown, Sunday, December 29th, 1947 at a quiet but impressive ceremony performed at 3 p. m. at the Lutheran church in Englewood, Colorado. Reverend Schmid was the officiating clergyman. The bridal couple recited their vows before an altar decorated with pink and white carnations. The ceremony was witnessed by Mrs. Leva Orndorff and Mrs. Gene Derowitsch, both of Denver.
The bride was lovely in a light blue suit with black accessories and her corsage was of gardenias and red roses. The groom wore the conventional blue suit. Immediately following the ceremony the bridal party went to the Cosmopolitan hotel where a wedding dinner was served. The bridal couple returned to Wray Monday to receive the congratulations of their friends and expect to depart the latter part of this week on a honeymoon trip to California.
The bride is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Deterts of Vernon. Helen was born and raised in this county and graduated from the Vernon high school with the class of 1942. She has had numerous positions in Wray where her charming manner has won for her a host of friends.
The groom is the eldest son of J. J. Brown of Laird. Robert is also a native Yuma countian. He graduated from the Laird high school with the class of 1942 and in August 1943 answered the call of his country to service in the armed forces. Robert was a member of the U. S. Army Infantry and saw many days of combat duty, and some mighty tough going in almost two years overseas duty. Returning to his homeland he received his honorable discharge from the armed forces in July 1946. Robert is a young man of fine character and his winning smile has brought him a legion of friends.
The Rattler joins their many friends here in extending congratulations and best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brown for a long and happy wedded life."

ANNA

Tha friends of Miss Anna Deterts and John Engel of Vernon will be interested in the announcement of their marriage which occurred on January 17, 1946 at St. Francis, Kansas, Judge Florence Curry officiated at the single ring ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Richards of Wray attended the couple. The bride wore s sky blue dress with brown accessories.
Mrs. Engel is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Deterts of Vernon and the groom is s son of John Engel of Eckley. The couple will make their home on a farm southwest of Vernon."

"John H. Engel was born June 8, 1918 to John and Louise (Bearman) Engel north of Vernon on a chicken ranch. He was baptized in the Vernon Lutheran Church.
At the age of two when his mother died, John was taken in by Anna and George Hadlock at their home southwest of Vernon. He attended Hope School, which was a two room school until the 8th grade.
On his 18th birthday the Hadlocks gave John four horses that came from a ranch in Wyoming. John had to break the horses to work on the ranch.
On October 1942, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. After receiving an honorable discharge he returned to the farm.
John married Anna Deterts on January 17, 1946 in St. Francis, KS. They farmed until 1961 when they moved to Wray. He then went to work for Wray Oil Company where he drove a propane truck for 19 1/2 years. John the delivered mail in the Vernon/Idalia and Hale areas. He also worked in the wheat fields during harvest season.
John was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, American Legion and served in the Color Guard for approximately 60 years. He was also a charter member of the Wray Elks Club.
John was preceded in death by his parents, sister Tillie and husband Harry Andrews, sister Clara and husband Earnest Wingfield, sister Helen and husband Earl Newton, sister Margaret and husband Hugh Harris, and brothers Ed Engel and Fred Engel, half brother Carl Engel and half sister Marie Beaumont.
John is survived by his wife Anna of 66 years, half sister Martha Klinzmann, sisters-in-law Ruth Engel, Helen Brown and Louise Brower, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Friday, December 7, 2012, 10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Wray, Colorado 2ith Pastor Glen Kline officiating. Interment was held in the Grandview Cemetery in Wray, Colorado. "

"Anna (Deterts) Engel was born on October 20, 1920 to Ed and “Geeske” Grace (Stekker) Deterts, at the family home west of Vernon, Colorado. Anna was one of seven children and attended early schooling at the Vernon Lutheran School.
She married John Henry Engel on January 17, 1946 in St. Francis, KS. They lived on a farm in Vernon, Colorado until the mid-1960’s when they then moved to Wray, Colorado.
Anna was employed by the City of Wray for many years and was very active in the American Legion Auxiliary and a member for 53 years. She volunteered to help with several funeral dinners, poppy sales and putting the Auxiliary flags out at the Grandview Cemetery in Wray on fellow members of Auxiliary on Memorial Day. She was the Community Service representative for the American Legion Auxiliary where she made sure that anyone who was under the weather or Auxiliary family member had passed away received a card, flowers or a fruit basket.
In more recent years, she was active in the 55 and Over Club of Wray.
Anna’s favorite things were playing cards, quilting, making pies and spending time with family and friends. Both John and Anna loved to go dancing and attending Saturday night pool games at the Vet’s Club.
Anna passed away on Thursday August 9, 2018 at the Hillcrest Care Center in Wray, Co. She is preceded in death by her husband, John, both parents, and her four brothers.
Anna is loved and survived by her sisters, Louise Brower of Yuma, Helen Brown of Wray, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Monday, August 13, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Schmidt-Jones Funeral Home in Wray, Colorado. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, 2:00 p.m. at the Schmidt-Jones Funeral Home, Wray, Colorado with Pastor Glen Kline officiating. Interment in the Grandview Cemetery in Wray, Colorado."

GEORGE

"Two members of the popular set of Wray and Vernon were joined in marriage at St. Francis, Kan., Oct. 25, 1939 at 1:30 in the afternoon by Rev. E. M. Mueller at the Lutheran parsonage in that city. Alta Grace McCoy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claude McCoy of south of Vernon, became the wife of George Deterts, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Deterts, also of the Vernon community.
The couple went quietly to St. Francis unaccompanied by friends, were married in a solemn ceremony and returned to Wray. They chose for their wedding date the birthday of the bridegroom and the 36th anniversary of the marriage of the bride's parents.
Mr. and Mrs. Deterts will make their home in Wray in the Conrad apartments. He will be helped by his wife in the Victor and George cafe of which he is a partner.
The Gazette extends its best wishes to the newlyweds, joining the many other friends of Mr. and Mrs. Deterts.
Mr. and Mrs. Deterts were born and have lived in the Vernon community all their lives."

1957 "Mr. and Mrs. Ed Deterts had their holiday dinner on Sunday with the guests including the Pat Brower family of Yuma, Mr. and Mrs. John Engel, Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Deterts, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Deterts, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brown and family, George Deterts of Denver and the Jake Deterts family of Dillon."

1963 "Mrs. Ed Deterts and daughter Mrs. Robert Brown, and son, D. J. Deterts, went to Denver last Thursday to be with their son and brother, George Deterts, who underwent surgery at the Swedish Hospital. Mr. Deterts returned to Wray that evening by train, Mrs. Brown came on Saturday and the mother returned home Monday night."
