Funeral services for one of Waucoma's most beloved women, Mrs. Cassie Brayton, who died at her home last Wednesday, September 13, 1955, were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Federated church. James Thames, student pastor of Dubuque, was in charge. Burial was in Waucoma cemetery beside her late husband, John Brayton, who died Oct. 18, 1944. Casketbearers were Tom Hoy, Othmar Luce, Dewey Chizek, Fred Nehls, Ernest Gager and Orange Willis. Cassie Pratt Brayton, daughter of Oliver and Catherine Pratt, was born at Monticello, Wis., April 15, 1862, and grew to young womanhood there. She was married Oct. 22, 1882, at Monticello to John R. Brayton. They came to Waucoma Jan. 1, 1884, and lived here for 71 years. They were the parents of three daughters, Hattie, Mrs. Wilmer Goff, Ruthven; Edith, Mrs. Otto Davis, Dubuque, and Oral, Mrs. Roy Shurtleff, Hawkeye. Mrs. Brayton was a local telephone operator here for 33 years, retiring at the age of 81 years. In 1924, she received the Theodore N. Vale award for heroism in the line of duty. That year, Waucoma had a disastrous fire, and while her life was in grave danger, she refused to leave her post. This national award is given to Bell telephone operators and she is the only one in Iowa receiving such an award, although not working for the Bell company. Surviving besides her daughters are eight grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren. Her parents and husband preceded her in death. |
