George F. and Mildred (Ballard) Butler, Happyville

In 1880 Linn County, Kansas, Jas. A. Butler is a laborer, 30, born in Ohio, Elizabeth J. 27 in Indiana. The Ancestry trees and the 1900 census don't show George. Neither does the John Butler 42 born inKentucky, married to Bertha 22 born in New York in 1900 Anderson County.

"James A Butler died at his home in Carlyle township on the morning of Nov. 14, 1897, in the 52nd year of his age and was carefully laid away by his friends and neighbors in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

Mr. Butler had lived in Allen county but a few months. He had long been afflicted with dropsy and the last few weeks of his life endured all pain and torture that accompanies that dread disease. His neighbors were very kind to him and did all they could to ameliorate his terrible sufferings.
He leaves a wife, two sons and four little girls without the love and care of a husband and father.

In 1900 Allen County, Kansas, Elizabeth Corisenberry, born Sept 1862 in Indiana, married one year to Thomas Feb 1842 Ohio. She's had eight kids, seven living. Hattie Nov 1885 and Isabel March 1888 both born in Kansas, Alfrata June 1890 and Flossie July 1892 in Iowa.

James Alexander Butler died young, 1897, in Kansas and is buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, 3 miles east of Carlyle, Kansas # 143325547. This family poss. was from Iowa, moved to Butler County & Linn County, Kansas, then back to Mason City, Iowa, then back to Kansas, Allen County. In addition to farming, in Kansas, James may have worked in the coal mines, in Iowa, he may have drilled water wells. His family was said to have been of German descent. After James's death Jane married a Thomas William Cruisenberry (sp?), a civil war veteran who was orginally from Ill., and gained two step-sons. Jane also may have been married once before James and had one child. James Alexander Butler and Elizabeth "Jane" Hawthorne's children were:

1. Son: George Finley Butler (my ggrandfather), b. 8/4/1883, Linn County, Kansas; d. 8/30/1970, Clinton, Henry County, Missouri.

2. Son: John Thomas Butler, b. 5/2/1879, Linn County, Kansas; d. 10/11/1951, Kansas. Married 1. Ola Olene Hockett. 2. Mamie Hensley.

3. Daughter: Alphareta (Alpha) Butler, b. 6/26/1889, Iowa; d. 1/1/1961. Married Boyd Lane Schultz.

4. Daughter: Pearl Butler, b. 1891; d. 1/17/1953, Kansas City, Missouri. Buried in Old Iola, Kansas Cemetery. Married Earnie Coppen. No children.

5. Daughter: Isabell Butler, b. 3/8/1888; d. 1922. Buried in Yates Center, Kansas. Married Frank Kunkel. Isabelle 1888-1922 is buried in Yates Center, Kansas.

6. Daughter: Sarah Ann Butler, b. 2/20/1881, Linn County, Kansas; d. 2/6/1942. Buried in Fairview Cemetery, Mildred, Kansas. Married 1. George Ray (shot to death in self defense by his wife in 1913 per Iola, KS newspaper); 2. ? Duggan; 3. ? Moss in Gas City; 4. ? Daughtery; 5. ? Wetzek abt. 1925.

7. Daughter: Hattie Butler, b. 1887; d. 1918. Buried in Iola, Kansas. Married ? Blunt.

George's mother Elizabeth Hawthorn was 17 in 1870, with Sophronia 40 and Wesley Robins, 40 in 1880 Mercer County, Missouri.

Elizabeth was in Linn County, Kansas in 1880, 27, with Jas A. Butler, 30.

In 1885 James 35 and Jane 32 are in Linn County, with John T. 5, Sarah A. 4, and George 1.

George is in Nemaha County, Kansas in 1900, 15, born in Kansas, with Frank Robbins 30, his wife Orpha 26, and two daughters. John Butler, 52, born in Illinois is with them - perhaps an uncle? Frank is perhaps a cousin by marriage.

In 1900 George is in Anderson County, Kansas, born August 1883 in Kansas, a hired man for Isaac Mourin 52 born in Indiana and Ida 47 Missouri.
Another hired man is William Crusenbery, 21 born in Kansas - so he must be a step-brother.

He's in Yuma County Colorado, in 1910, 26, born in Kansas, farming alone. His father was born in Ohio, mother in Indiana.

In 1910 Anderson County, Kansas, Franklin J. Ballard is 41, Harriet 31, with Mildred 13, Mary M. 11, Roy 9, Florence 7, Doris 4, and Lloyd 1.

Mildred was in Anderson County, Kansas in 1910, with Franklin J. Ballard 41 and Harriet C. Ballard.

George F. Butler, 33 of Mildred, Yuma County, married Mildred Ballard, 20, of Anderson County, Kansas on November 25, 1916.
He likely came to Yuma County because his aunt Mary Ann (Hawthorne) (King) Brittianand grandmother Sophrona (Millsap)(Hawthorne) Robins were there, both buried in Vernon.

George was in Yuma County in 1917 when his sister Hattie died.

James Franklin Ballard 1868-1934 is buried in Anderson County # 51112672, with Harriett C. (Minckley) Ballard 1878-1969 # 51112661.

April 27, 1934 Iola, Kansas "The funeral services for James Franklin Ballard were held in the F^rrs funeral home in Colony at 2 o'block yesterday (Thursday) afternoon with the Rev. I. L. Neuenswan..der of ..elda officiating. Interment was in the Colony cemetery. Mr. Ballard is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hattie Ballard; two sons, Roy (Dick) Ballard,: Picher, Okla., and Lloyd ("ted) Ballard. of Colony; six daughters: Miss Doris Ballard, Chicago; Mrs. Frances Smith, Independence; Mrs. Eleanor Hyder, Mildred; Mrs. George Butler, Hahatonka, Mo.; Miss Bessie Ballard of the home; Mrs. Merle Stein, Detroit, Mich.; two sisters: Mrs. Etta Swink, Peoria, Ill., and Mrs, Eva Yoder, Indianapolis, Ind... both of whom were unable to attend the funeral. Also: other relatives and friends."

July 1914 "FOR SALE - About 600 or 700 bushels of last year's corn, 65c per bushel in crib.
Geo. Butler, 6 miles south and 9 miles west of Vernon."

May 1915 - Wray Rattler, Mildred items "Geo. Butler is expecting his mother and sister from Iola, Kansas to pay him a visit in the near future."

George proved up two quarters in section 25, 2S 46W in 1916.

March 16, 1916 "George Butler held his sale one day last week, and has rented his farm to Earl Hensley for the coming year and says that he is going to take life easy and see some of the sights. We are just wondering if George hasn't funny notions in his head? Well, any way George, bring her back with you and we will meet you at the gate with a handful of rice and old shoes."

George F. Butler and Mildred Ballard married in Yuma County November 25, 1916.

January 31, 1918 "Away along in the wee early hours of the morning last Thursday, the stork visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Butler and left a fine baby boy. Mother and baby are doing nicely and George thinks he will pull through all O. K. by close watching and good care."

In 1920 Yuma County, George is farming, 36, with Mildred 23, both born in Kansas. Bert is 1.

In 1925 they're in Anderson County, Kansas, George 41, Mildred 27, Bert 7, Opal 5, James 3, and Roy A. five months.

In 1930, George and Mildred are farming in Camden County, Missouri, with Bert 12, Opal 10, James 8 (these three born in Colorado), Roy 5, and Edith eleven months born in Kansas.

They're still there in 1940, with James, Roy, and Edith.

George registered for WWII in Decaturville, Missouri, born August 4, 1883 in Linn County, Kansas. His reference was Mrs. Kenneth North, Camdenton, Missouri.

1947 Hermitage, Missouri "Mr. and Mrs. George F. Butler, formerly of Camden county, bought the place. Mr. Butler's parents own the Sven Anderson old place east of here."

1955 "Mrs. Chas. E. Carlstrom and Mr. and Mrs. George Butler and granddaughter, Ellen North, have been visiting with relatives in Hutchinson, Kan. and Kansas City. Mr. and Mrs. Butler came home last week and Ellen stayed in Kansas City with her father until Sunday."

1961 Iola, Kansas " Mr. and Mrs. George Butler of Hermitage and granddaughter were Saturday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Livingston. Mrs. Butler is the former Mildred Ballard, daughter of Frank Ballard, deceased."

George Finley Butler 1883-1970 is buried in Hickory County, Missouri # 24569525, with Mildred E. (Ballard) Butler 1897-1985 # 24569533.

Bert E. Butler 1918-1944, dying in Germany, is buried in Hickory County # 24569522.
March 1949 "Mr. and Mrs. George Butler of Preston have received word that the body of their son, PFC Bert E. Butler, is due to arrive in the United States soon from Europe. The body will be shipped from Chicago to the Hathaway Funeral Home. Funeral and burial will be at Hermitage and arrangements will be made known at a later date. PFC Butler was killed in action in the Battle of the Bulge on December 21, 1944. He gave his life at the age of 26 years, 11 months and 2 days. Mr. and Mrs. Butler reside on the Sven Anderson old farm between Hermitage and Preston. They came to this county about three years ago from Camden county near Ha Ha Tonka."

"Funeral services for Pfc. Bert Eugene Butler. 31, Preston, Mo., who was killed in action in the battle of the Bulge, December 21, 1944, were held in the Hermitage high school building Preston, Missouri, May 1 at 2 p. m. Private Butler enlisted in the United States Army March 4, 1941 and served in the third battalion, 422nd Infantry. He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously May 27, 1945. Private Butler lived for a good many years east of Colony with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Butler; now of Preston. Later he made his home with his uncle; Mr. and Mrs. Ted Ballard of Colony. His grandmother, Mrs. Hattle Ballard still makes her home here. His mother was the former Mildred Ballard, oldest daughter of Mrs. Hattle Ballard. Surviving him are his parents and two sisters and two brothers. Those attending the services from here were Mrs. Hattle Ballard and Mr. and Mrs. Ted Ballard and Richard."

Opal Butler married Kenneth C. North on October 9, 1937 in Lebanon, Laclede County, Missouri.
She was born August 17, 1919 at Vernon, Colorado, name as North in 1942, as Turrell in 1964.

1955 Hermitage, Missouri "Mrs. George Butler has recently returned from Yuma, Ariz, and a short visit with her daughter, Opal and family. Mr. and Mrs. Butler were visiting relatives in Kansas City the past week."

Opal is buried in Butler, Missouri 1919-2000 # 124053443.

Kenneth C. North 1918-1995 is buried in Camdenton, Missouri # 41331232, on the same stone as Delma U. North 1919-1970.
"James Franklin Butler, 92, Adrian, Missouri, died Monday, September 29, 2014 at home. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 2, 2014 at the Crescent Hill Cemetery in Adrian. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Adrian. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian Fire Department, or Grace Hospice, Kansas City, Missouri. Jim was born February 2, 1922 in Yuma, Colorado, the son of George Franklin and Mildred Elizabeth (Ballard) Butler. He was fond and proud to tell people that he was born in an old sod house. The family moved to Nebraska, then to Kansas, and on to Camden, Missouri in 1929, where he grew up, helping out on the family farm. Jim was inducted into the Armed Services in October, 1942. After basic training at Fort Riley, Kansas, he was stationed on the Northwest Coast in the Mechanize Cavalry, then was sent to the European Theater in June, 1943, with the 28th Infantry Recon Division and returned to the states in August, 1945. Jim was then stationed in Hattiesburg, Mississippi at Fort Shelby, where he served in the Military Police until an Honorable Discharge in October, 1945. After serving his country, which he was very proud of, Jim returned to Kansas City, Missouri. At this time, Jim worked at Security and Neevels. In 1947 he met his wife-to-be, Doris Anne Walker. They were married in Lathrop, Missouri on March 19, 1948 and raised three children. Jim then went to Barber School. After graduating and receiving his license, he went to work for O’Malley’s Barber Shop on the Plaza for 10 years. In 1957 he and his wife bought a farm west of Passaic, Missouri and he also bought and ran his own barber shop in Adrian, Missouri. In 1959, the family moved to Adrian; in 1961, they moved to Altona, Missouri and in 1964, they moved back to Adrian, where Jim has said Doris Anne told him she was through moving, so they haven’t moved since!
Jim retired in 1983 from the barber shop, due to illness. Jim had many do-it-yourself hobbies and was always working with his hands. He loved to be outdoors and digging around in the earth or in the shop, making or revising something. Even when his health was poor, he had some project, sitting on his walker or by his chair that he was tinkering with. The family is very proud of all he did. Jim never knew a stranger. He was willing to talk to or give a hand to help anyone. The family remembers several times that strangers were at the house because he could do something to help them. There was never an animal that wasn’t welcome on his property, tame or wild; he would see that it was taken care of with food and water and compassion. Jim’s family loved listening to his life stories. He lived a very happy life and his family loved him. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Opal Turrell and Edith Eckert, two brothers, Bert Butler and Roy Butler, and one son, James Bradley Butler. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Doris Anne Butler of Adrian, Missouri; one daughter, Elaine Jones and husband, Robert of Grandview, Missouri; one son, John Butler of Adrian; 3 grandsons, David Jones and wife, Tristen of Humansville, Missouri, Michael Jones and wife, Ashley of Grandview, Missouri and Daniel Jones and wife, Samantha of Belton, Missouri; 2 great-grandchildren, Travis Jones and Karson Jones; and many nieces and nephews. "

"Edith M. Eckert, 82, died Saturday (Aug. 21, 2010), at her Newton, Kansas home. She was born on April 22, 1928, in Welda, Anderson County, Kansas to George F. and Mildred (Ballard) Butler.On Nov. 12, 1946, she married Bill J. Eckert at Swope Park Baptist Church in Kansas City, Mo., and he preceded her in death in 2003.
Edith was a longtime active member of First Baptist Church in Newton. She was a member of the American Business Woman's Association and Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority. She also volunteered with Girl Scouts and at the former Bethel Deaconess Hospital. Edith was a head waitress at Lee and Ida's restaurants in Newton and Hutchinson for many years, and she worked at the Learjet company in Wichita. She also was an Avon lady for 11 years. Edith enjoyed having coffee and visiting with her many friends. She also looked forward to spending time with her loving family.
Edith is survived by her sons, Billy Jr. and Mary Eckert of Neenah, Wis., and Gary L. Eckert of Wichita; daughter, Patricia and Ric Snyder of Hutchinson; brothers, James and Dorie Butler of Adrian, Mo., and Roy and Zelma Butler of Pittsburg, Mo.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her father, George F. Butler; mother, Mildred L. (Ballard) Butler; brother, Bert Butler; sister, Opal Turrell; and husband, Billy Eckert Sr.Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Newton with Pastor Terry Tareila presiding.Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in care of Petersen Funeral Home."
