In 1880 Van Buren County, Iowa, David Gilbert is 60, Deboria 56, Daniel 23, Emma 17, George 15, and Charles 12.


He was in Van Buren County in 1860, age 14, with David 32 and Deborah, 30.
He was farming in Van Buren County, Iowa in 1880, 36, born in Indiana, with Lodinia 29 born in Indiana, Albert 7, Dora 5, Bertha 3, and Augustus one month.

Lodenia was in Henry County, Iowa in 1860, age 10, with B. Robinson 62 and Maria 54. Levi is 21, Maranda 19, William 14,

In 1870 Henry County, Braxton Robinson is 72, born in Virginia, Maria 65 in East Canada, and R. Alice 19, born in Indiana. In the same household is Sarah E. Stubbs 40 a seamstress.
So William A. Gilbert married Sarah ROBINSON Stubbs' sister.

In 1885 Van Buren County, William A. Gilbert is farming, 40, with Alice L. 34, both born in Indiana.
Albert B. is 12, Dora M. 9, Bertha D. 7, Roscoe W. 2, and Arthur R. 1.
Maria Robinson is 79 born in North Carolina in the next household.

Lodenia must have died between 1888 (when Guy was born) and 1895... It's very possible that she's buried in Vernon, Colorado.

William A. Gilbert cash-claimed a quarter in section 20, 2S 44W in 1890, and three miles from brother Daniel's 1801 cash claim
.
That's about a mile from his sister Emma Stubbs' claim.

He's in Denver in 1900, a painter born Dec 1844 in Indiana with Sarah E. Feb 1847 in Illinois, married five years. William's sons Ray A., a teamster born Feb 1884 in Iowa and Guy H. Dec 1888 in Colorado.

David Gilbert died in 1898, age 79, buried in Iowaville Cemetery, Selma, Van Buren County.
Findagrave # 40633209 has him born 1799, dying 1889.
Deborah Gilbert 1825-1907 is buried in the Iowaville Cemetery # 40633210.


FROM THE McLAUGHLIN FAMILY HISTORY
In 1860, Vilotta and four of her children, Isaac (age 19), James (age 16), Sarah (age 13) and Mary J (age 10) are living in Leyar Creek, Lykins County, Kansas. Her daughter, Harriett Emma (age 18), is also living in that same place with her husband James A Haggard. They were married in Scott County, Illinois on 8 April 1858.

In 1870, Vilotta was living in Lyon, Knox County, Missouri with her daughter, Sarah E. and her husband John Dorman. Sarah E. married John Dorman on 28 December 1865 in Hancock County, Illinois. Vilotta' s daughter, Hariett Emma, was living with her husband James A Haggard in Kansas City Ward 2, Jackson County, Missouri.
In 1880, the only member of the family I have found is Vilotta's son, Isaac. He was living in Lake, Mono County, California with his wife Mary E. He was age 38. He was married to Mary E. Bowman on April 29, 1880 in Mono County, California.
Lodimia died sometime after Dec 1888 and before abt. 1895 when William remarried. She would be buried Colorado.

WILLIAM A. GILBERT and SARAH E. DORMAN married in Arapahoe County, Colorado on September 8, 1895
In 1900 Vilotta was living in Denver, Arapahoe County, Colorado with her daughter Sarah E. and her second husband, William A. Gilbert. Vilotta reported having five children and three are living. Sarah E reported having had no children. Vilotta' s daughter Hariett Emma, was living with her husband James A. Haggard in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. Hariett reported having had four children and four are alive.

Per the 1870 Kansas City, Missouri census she had children: William, Ralph, Lotta, and Harriett.
William G. L. McLaughlin stated that Vilotta died 10 September 1908 in Nucla, Montrose County, Colorado. This is likely true as her son in law William A. Gilbert was in Nucla, in the City Directory, listed as a painter by profession.^^^ This was his occupation in Denver ten years earlier.

Vilotta lived near her daughter Sarah E. Gilbert in her last years. Sarah E. McLaughlin Dorman Gilbert died in Washington County, Oregon on 25 July 1930. Sarah was the only member of the family that I have been able to document where and when they were born.


William is farming in Nucla in 1910, 65, Sarah E. 63, and Guy H. 20.

November 1910 "Andrew Sett left yesterday for Chicago, Mr. W. A. Gilbert having bought their place; consideration $4,200."

October 1912 Nucla " Mr. Ashard has moved his family to the old W. A. Gilbert place"

January 1913 " The report is going around that G. M. Love and George Smith of Montrose are going to build a saloon on Main street, and also that U. H. Walker and W. A. Gilbert are building a pool hall on the same street. "

1919 "Two carloads of fine hogs were shipt from the Nucla section last week to the Denver markets. M. V. Fredericks, L. M. Veatch, G. M. Love, Shaw Bros., F. C. Gibbs, W. A. Gilbert and Everett Gibbs furnished the hogs, which averaged 250 pounds."

William A. Gilbert 1844-1930 is buried in Hillsboro, Washington County, Oregon # 55704588 (the same county as his sister Emma (Gilbert) Stubbs)

So is Sarah E. (McLaughlin) Gilbert 1847-1930 # 55704991,.

BERTHA

In the same household in 1900 Denver as Albert Gilbert, Edmond B. Ashard is a brick wheeler, born October 1871 in Colorado is married five years to Bertha D. Oct 1877 Colorado. Ada A. Dec 1896 and Edmond Sept 1898 were born in COlorado. Edmond's father James Achard March 1834 in New York is with them.

In 1910 Jefferson County, Colorado, Edmond is a farm laborer, 38, with Bertha D. 32, Ada 13, Edmond 11, Leonard A. 6, Emma 4, and Howard G. 1.

June 25, 1915 Telluride, Colorado "V. L. Pomeroy of Nucla secured a marriage license to wed Miss Ada Alice Ashard also of Nucla from County Clerk Robt. E. Hogan last night."

July 19, 1915 "Born To Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Ashard, a boy, weight 9 pounds. The mother and her babe are doing nicely." (this would be Clarence.)

February 1917 "Mrs. Visher Pomeroy arrived in Nucla on Tuesday afternoon from Sawpit to nurse her mother, Mrs. Ed. Ashard, who is quite sick. "

March 22, 1917 "Born - On St. Patrick's day, to Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Ashard, a fine baby girl. Mother and babe doing nicely. " (this would be Thelma)

They're farming in Nucla, Colorado in 1920, with Edward 21, Leonard 18, Emma M. 13, Howard 11, Clarence 4, and Thelma 3.

December 1920 "Visher Pomeroy and family, who left Sawpit last September for Racine, Wisconsin, do not find the state as they thought and are very anxious to return to Colorado. Mrs. Pomeroy is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs Ed. Ashard of Nucla. Most people who leave Colorado are always glad to get back. "

In 1930 they're in Portland, Oregon, Edmond 56 a laborer in a veneer plant, Bertha 48, Leonard 26 and Howard 21 both laboreres, Calrence 14 and Thelma 12.

Edward died March 17, 1932, and is buried in Portland # 60842255.


"Edmond's father was the manufacturer of Ashard's Dry Yeast, Denver, CO. His yeast was recommended in an old cookbook published by Central Presbyterian Church, Denver, CO. "

Bertha is widowed in 1940 Portland, 62, with Leonard A. 36. They're living with THelema, 23, who's married to Guy L. Chambers 27.

Bertha, born October 1877, died May 10, 1974 in Multnomah County.
Bertha Ashard, 7724 N. Fessenden; mother of Ada Pomeroy, Emma Mueller, Thelma Chambers, Leonard, Howard and Clarence Ashard; 19 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren 12 great-great- gra ndchildren.

A retired owner and operator of a gasoline station, Clarence V. Ashard, 81, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 1996 in Lilliwaup, Washington.
Mr. Ashard was born July 2, 1915, in Nucla, Colo. He was a Vancouver resident before moving to Lilliwaup, where he lived the past 19 years.
He attended Messiah Lutheran Church.
Mr. Ashard enjoyed salmon fishing, camping, clamming, hiking and hunting.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth, at home; a son, Bob of Brush Prairie; three daughters, Phyllis Mulford and Roberta Fuller of Woodland and Beverly Quam of Vancouver; a sister, Thelma Chambers of Los Gatos, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Ada Alice Ashard was the daughter of Edmond Baker Ashard and Bertha Deborah Gilbert Ashard. Ada was born in Denver, Colorado December 11, 1896 . Ada was married to Visher Crolius Pomeroy on July 3, 1915, in Montrose, CO. Ada passed away in Portland, OR on March 10, 1980, # 83757369.


WILLIAM ROSCOE

William Roscoe Gilbert was born August 6, 1882 in Portland, Van Buren County to Wm. A. Gilbert and Alice L. Robinson.

ALBERT

Albert B. Gilbert and Emma D. Boies married in Denver on September 13, 1896.

He's a brick yard teamster in 1900 Denver, 27, born in Iowa, with Emma I.D. 24 born in Iowa. She's had two kids, none living.

Possibly Emma was in Keokuk County, Iowa in 1880, age 4, with Percilla 32, Frank 6, May 5, and Emma 4.

Albert, a carpenter, and Emma are in Portland, Oregon in 1910, with two roomers.

Sadie Durkee is in Portland in 1910, 26, born in Canada, with Clayton Durkee 28. Frank O. is 4. Gladys M. 2, and Sadie's sister Mary Marchand 24 born in Canada is with them.

"Sarah" was in Grafton County, New Hampshire in 1900, 15, wtih Charles "Merchant" 52, Phebe 53, Fred 26, Joseph 24, Eugene 22, Phebe 19, Louise 16., Sarah 15, and Mary 13.

In 1920 Portland, Albert is 47, a carpenter, now married to Sadie 33, born in Canada, immigrating in 1889.

In 1930 Albert 56 and Sadie 43 have her daughter Gladys M. Durkee 22, and son Clayton A. 19, both born in Oregon.

In 1940 Albert is a painter, with Sadie, and her son Clayton Durkee.

Albert died October 4, 1957 in Multnomah County, spouse Sadie.

He's buried in Portland 1872-1957 # 8844159.
Gladys M. Durkee, 19, daughter of Clayton A. and Sadie G. Durkee, married Desper Merle Emery on May 25, 1927 in Vancouver, Washington.

Gladys M. (Durkee) Emery 1907-1981 is buried in Willamette National # 623457, with Deswper M. Emery 1902-1994.

DORA

Dora married Charles Richard Shepherd on Sept 8, 1895 in Denver

In 1900 they're in Teller County, Colorado, Dora M. 25, Charles K. 29, William B. 2, adn Charlene three months.

In 1910 they're in Nucla, Colorado, Charles working on county roads. Dora 34 born in Iowa has had six kids, two living. Willie 12 Mary 8, Earl 6, and Charles 3 months were born in Colorado.

1912 Montrose "Charles Shepherd, road supervisor of Nucla, drove over to Montrose on Sunday and will remain here for several days on business."

August 16, 1915 " Born: To Mrs. Dora Shepherd, a baby girl last week. Grandma Rowley in attendance. Mother and daughter doing nicely."

Dora is widowed in 1920 Nucla, a laundress, 44, with Earl G. 17 a teamster, Charlie R. 11, Bertha P. 8, and Lorena L. 4, all four born in Colorado.

July 1920 " Clyde Sly has purchased the Francis Unfred place in town consideration *800. while Floyd Wlnkfield bought the four lots adjoining George Sly's place owned by Mrs. Dora Shepherd. the price for these were $750. The Unfreds and Shepherds will go to Grand Junction to live."

One tree said Dora died in Portland on July 22, 1926.

In 1930 Portland, Oregon, Earl 28, Charles R. 21, Bertha 18, and Lorena 15 are living with sister May C. Unfred 30 and her husband Francis.

Charline married Francis Marion Unfred on June 18, 1918 in Nucla. Francis 1893-1971.

In 1922 Grand Junction, Francis M. is a laborer, with May C. at 824 1st Avenue. WNellie F. Unfred (Wid Lenhart M. ( is also living there.
Nellie F. Unfred 1870-1958 is buried in Fruita # 73657963, Lenhart Marion Unfred 1858-1913 buried in Billings, Montana # 158147053.
May Charlene, per one tree, died July 31, 1948 in Jefferson County, Oregon.

Francis Marion Unfred, born Aug 22, 1893 in Hopkins, Missouri, died Feb 23, 1971 in Portland, buried in Riverview Abbey.

Bertha P. Shepherd, 19, born in Colorado, married Harry L. Newton on Sept 13, 1930 in Vancouver, Washington.
Bertha "Newtie" Shepard Newton 1911-1998 is also buried in Riverview Abbey # 113713636.
Lorena L. married Charles S. Trout, living in Long Beach California in 1961 and died in Oregon Dec 18, 1966.
Charles S. Trout died in Jefferson County, Oregon on April 30, 1967.

Earl J. Shepherd 1902-1965 is buried in Lane County, Oregon, # 77638753, with Hazel Elizabeth (Chaney) Shepherd 1912-2000.

May 1918 "William Shepherd, a former Ridgway boy, but who is now In service, and who has been home on a furlough, spent several days in Ridgway the past week visiting his relatives and friends"

Wm. Benjamin Shepherd died Oct 31, 1918 at Frott Collins, mother Dora May Shepherd, Nucla.

Charles R. Shepherd is a laborer in Portland in 1940, 31, married to Ruth H. 31 born in Iowa.

He died April 27, 1958 in Mapleton Oregon, # 77702256, wife Ruth H. Harrison.
Ruth Shepard married Oran H. Fore in 1948 and died December 1985.

ROY

March 10, 1914 "The sad news reached this place of the death of Mrs. Mildred Gilbert, wife of Roy A. Gilbert, formerly of Nucla, but now located in Oregon. Mrs. Gilbert had been a sufferer for a long time from kidney trouble, which finally resulted in her death about a week ago. Just about a year ago Roy's brother lost his wife from a similar cause. Roy and his brother are sons of the well known W. A. Gilbert of Nucla."

She might be the Fredricka Kolpin Gilbert 1876-Feb 25, 1914 buried in Portland, Oregon # 186591678.

March 6, 1915 Telluride, Colorado "A. R. Gilbert, of Nucla, and Miss Freda Mossman, of Portland, Ore., were joined in the holy bonds of matrimony by Rev. B. F. Ross, at the Methodist parsonage last night at 7:30. They came up from the lower country yesterday, securing a marriage license yesterday afternoon. The newlyweds left on the return trip to Nucla this morning, driving out about 9 oclock. They will reside on a homestead which Mr. Gilbert recently acquired."

July 1915 "Between trains Monday Mr. and Mrs. Roy Gilbert, who have been visiting in Nucla. chatted with local friends on their return to their home In Portland."

July 1915 "The Nucla church has undergone a coat of paint and looks fine. The painting was done by W. A. Gilbert aad son Roy."

Arthur registered for WWI in Portland, a truck driver for W. P. Fuller, born Feb 29, 1884, spouse Freda Gilbert.

They're farming with William and Sarah in Nucla, Colorado in 1920, Arthur R. 36, Freda 26, Bertha M. 3a nd William A. 2.

1921

In 1930 Hillsboro, Oregon, A. R. Gilbert is a laborer, 46, with Freda 37 born in Germany, Bertha 14, William G. 12 born in Oregon, Alice 10 and Dora 8 in Colorado, Louise 4 in Oregon.

In 1940 Portland, Arthur R. is 56, Freda 48, Alice 20, Dorothy 18, Louise 14.

Freda, per one tree, died in Hillsboro June 13, 1990.

Bertha Mae Gilbert 19 married John Jackson in Vancouver, Washington on January 22, 1935.

In 1920 Montrose County, Jessie B. Johnson is 10, with W.E. Johnston 45 and Cara A. 33, with six other kids.
One tree said William E. Johnston died January 8, 1925 in Colorado Springs.
He could be the William Johnston buried in January 11, 1925 in Florence, Colorado # 79508618.
One tree said Carisa Johnston died in 1948 in Pueblo, Colorado.

March 25, 1919 "Guy Gilbert of Nucla and Miss Mary Johnson - SHOULD BE JESSIE - of Hastings Mesa, motored up from Placervllle Friday with Will Parsons, secured a marriage license, were married and returned to Placervllle within an hour. Judge John M. Way performed the marriage ceremony and Will Parsons and Edgar Kracaw were the witnesses. Both bride and groom are well known residents of this section and have a host of friends in Placerville and Nucla. "

Guy is farming in Florence, Colorado in 1930, 41, with Jesse 30, Clara M. 9, Earl 8, and Ellis 3.

In 1940 Florence, Guy is a road laborer for the WPA, 51, with Jessie B. 40, Clara 19, William Earl 18, Albert Ellis 13, and Esther Eileen 1, all born in Colorado. Jessie's mother Cora E . Johnson 64, born in Kansas, in Bayfield Colorado in 1935, is with them.

Guy H. Gilbert 1888-1959 is buried in Pueblo Colorado # 116180973.
So is Jessie Belle Gilbert 1899-1970 # 116180957.
