March 25, 1899 "August Becker and Fred Engle
were scanning the eastern horizon from the Wray
heights Thursday for a couple of prairie schooners
containing relatives, but up to a late hour they
were not sighted."
(August Becker 22, son of Frederick Baker and Perline Kaefer, married Anna Winkelman, 19, daughter of Ernest Windkelman on May 27, 1896 in Butler County, Nebraska. Both were born in Germany.
Anna is buried in Vernon 1867-1911 # 6518023 "She was a daughter of Ernst/William and Johannah Louise (Gumelt) Winkelman. She was the sister of: Mono, Anna Minnie Emma and Ottelea W. "
March 9, 1901 "Mrs. Winkelman, mother of
Mrs. August Becker, Mrs. Fred Engel and
Mrs. Minnie Thomas, died of old age on Tuesday
morning, February 20. The deceased was 75 years of
age."
Johannah Louise (Gumelt) Winkelman 1821-1901 is buried in Vernon # 6519674.
In 1900 Glendale precinct, Frederick Engle born April 1859, married 18 years to Otelia W June 1857., both born in Germany. She's had eleven children, two living. John P. Feb 1887 in Nebraska, and Frank Feb 1891 in Colorado. They're next to August and Anna Becker. (their homesteads touched, so their houses
could have been very close together.)
Fred and Ottelea are alone in 1920 and 1930 Yuma County, still farming.
Ottelea W. (Winkelman) Engle 1857-1937

(Gumelt) Winkelman. She was the sister of:
Anna Amilia, Mono and Anna Minnie Emma.
She was married to Frederick J. Engel. They had the following children: Willie, August L., Christ H., Anna M., Mary L., John R. and Frank O"

"Born, to Mr. and Mrs. John Engle on Saturday,
March 13, 1909, a boy."
July 1910 Wray Gazette "Fred Engel accompanied
by his son John, returned Tuesday morning
from Wymore, Nebr., where he had gone the Friday
previous, for a few days visit with his son
Frank, who lives in that vicinity.
While there he enjoyed a visit with Henry Peter
who formerly lived east of Vernon. Mr. Engel
reports that crops in that section are
excellent but that in common with almost
every other part of the county they are needing rain at present. "

November 1910 " Frank Engle returned from
Nebraska Tuesday of this week and will remain
with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Engle
during the corn husking season."
"Mr. and Mrs. Frank Engel of the Vernon
neighborhood are the happy parents of a 10-pound
baby girl, born to them Thursday, April 27, 1922."
"Heirs of Jacob Engle" timber-claimed a quarter
in section 10, 3S 42W in 1898, next to Augusta Engel's
homestead of 1892, and Lea B. Engel's cash-claim in 1891.
Leah also timber-claimed a quarter in section 22, 3S 42W in 1898.
December 1910 "Alvin Winkleman and his sister, Miss Martha,
arrived in Wray last Sunday from Berlin, Germany. They are a
nephew and niece of August Becker of south of Vernon and have come
to make their home in this country. Mr. Winkleman was a baker in
Berlin but will engage in farming here. They were expected to arrive
Saturday but did not get here until Sunday and there was no
one to meet them. They stayed with Mr. and Mrs. George Maag
until Mr. Becker came to town after them. They are bright looking
young people, such of the German extraction that
make our best citizens. The Gazette welcomes them to
our community and wishes them an abundance of success
in any of their undertakings."
January 4, 1912 "County Clerk Abbott issued a license to
wed Mr. Ferdinand Becker
and Miss Martha Winkelman both from south of Vernon on Friday, December 29. The Rattler wishes this young couple many happy years of wedded life."
November 7, 1912 "The 10 days old infant of Mr. and
Mrs. Ferdinand Becker passed away Thursday and was laid to rest
in the Glendale cemetery Saturday at 1 o'clock.
They have the sympathy of the community."
December 2, 1915 "Martha Winkelman was born in Germany in 1891.
She was married to Ferdinand Becker about five years ago.
At the time of her death she was 24 years, 3 months and five days
old. There were no children."
January 19, 1922 "Howard Alfred, the week-old son of
Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Becker, passed away at the Becker home
in Wray last Sunday. The funeral was held at the home on Monday
and was conducted by Rev. Strubel."
February 1912 "Frank Engel and Fritz Becker left Friday for Seward, Nebr., where they expect to find employment on the farm the coming summer."
JOHN
John Engle of Vernon and
Louise Beerman of Wray, both 20,
married in Wray on December 11, 1907. Witnesses were Fr. Engel and Geo. Hesse.
The ceremony was performed by Rev C. P,. Pebler.
In 1920 Vernon, on the same page as his parents and brother Frank,
John is 33, Louise 32, Fred H. 12, Tilla L. 9, Clara M. 7, Helen E. 6, Margrette L. 3, and John F. 1.
John Engle and Frances Dilka, both of Vernon, wee married by Judge I. L. Barker on Feb 25, 1925 at Wray.
In 1930, John 42 and Francis M. 26 are farming, with Fred E. 21, edward A. 9, Martha H. 4, Marie P. 3, and Carl H. 1.
John and "Matilda F." 37 are farming in Edkley in 1940, with Martha H. 14, marie P. 13, Carl H. 10, Junior H. 4, and Elmer L. five months.

John Paul Engel 1887-1969 is buried in Vernon # 80182182, with spouses
Louisa Engle 1887-1921 and Matilda Francis (Dilka) Engel 1903-1985, # 68331888.
January 1945 Eckley "Carl Engel and his sister, Mrs. Marie Newlan, have moved into the house in the east part of town formerly occupied by the Warnick famiy."
Carl is buried in Vernon 1928-2007 # 21184164.
John H. Engel is buried in Wray 1918-2012, # 102074319.

December 10, 1942 "Miss Marie Engel and Glen Newland of Yuma were married at St. Francis, Kansas, Saturday, November 14. Mrs. Engel and Mrs. Newland accompanied them."
October 14, 1943 "Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Newland are the parents of a son, born Thursday of last week at the Yuma hospital. The mother and baboy were dismissed from the institution Sunday."
1943 "Glenn Calvin Newland was sworn into the Marine Corps in Denver. Private Newland's wife, Marie and his parents Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Newland are residents of south of Yuma."

1943 "Private First Class Ed Engel is spending a furlough with his father, John Engel. He recently returned from action in the Aleutian Islands, and is at present stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma."
March 1946 "Mrs. Fred Engel and children from the Vernon neighborhood were
visitors of the former's sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Cline and family last friday" - Eckley items.
Marie Pauline Engel was born August 2, 1926, name Newland in 1944, Custer in 1949, Buaumont in 1972, dying Oct 14, 2004.
Marie Custer and William Beaumont married in Yuma County on May 25, 1972.

Glen Calvin Newland 1922-1994 is buried in Roundup, Montana # 14319897.
In 2003, Harry Benner died in Greeley, with son-in-law and daughter Dick and Patty Newland were living in La Salle.
FRANK
In 1920 Vernon precinct, Frank is farming next to his parents, 29, with Maggie 28 born in Kansas,
George 3, Henry 2, and Bertha 1.
In 1930 Vernon, Frank is 39, Margaretha 36, George C. 14, Henry G. 12, Bertha A. 11, and Ruthe E. 8.
They're next to John and Francis Engle and five kids.
In 1940 Yuma County, Frank is 49, Maggie 48, Ruth 17, and Mabel 8.
Margaretha (Wall) Engel 1893-1965 is buried in Vernon # 80182367.
Frank Henry Engel 1891-1981 is buried in Vernon # 80182026.
"Frank was born February 23, 1891 on the farm where he continued to live for many years,
to parents Fred and Otillia. His parents were married in Germany and came to David City,
Nebraska where they lived six years, then came to Vernon, Colorado and took a homestead
four miles west and three and 1/2 miles south. They lived on this placed until Frank was married,
then they built a home one half mile south.
Frank went to a schoolhouse located 1 and 1/2 miles north and a half mile west of their farm.
He married Margartha Wall of Haigler, Nebraska on December 3, 1914 and celebrated their
fiftieth anniversary in 1964. She passed away in 1965. They had five children,
George C., Henry J., Bertha A. Funk, Ruth E. Stone, and Mabel K. Dvorcek.
He bought his first Model-T Ford in 1914 and a truck in 1917. He always farmed with horses
and never owned a tractor. Frank was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church."
Henry J. Engel
1917–1995 is buried in Wray # 81744551.
"Henry was born in 1917 on a farm southwest of Vernon, Colorado. Parents Frank Henry and Margaretha (Wall) Engel. He learned the carpenter trade while living with his uncle, Fred Wall, at Haigler, Nebraska. Henry married Clarice (Hammell) Ellis in 1939 at St. Francis, Kansas. Clarice was born in 1913 at Curtis, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Cyrus Barton Hammell and Pearl Minton Hammell. Her family came to Colorado when she was just a year old. She attended the Laird schools, graduating in 1932.
Henry worked for the State Game and Fish Department for five years and decided to go into business of his own. He and Clarice designed their Meat Processing Plant and hired Gail Brown to build it. It opened in 1961.
The Engels have two sons, Frank Burton Engel and Ramon Neil Ellis, a son from Clarice's first marriage to Ted J. Ellis."

Ruth Elizabeth Otilla Engel Stone
1922–2017 is buried in Vernon # 177138782.
"Ruth Elizabeth Otillia Stone passed away March 5, 2017 at home in Otis, Colorado. She was born April 27, 1922 in Vernon, Colorado to Frank and Margaretha Engel. She attended Bunch Grass and Vernon Schools. She always rode Old Cap the horse to school everyday.
She married Eugene V. Stone on July 27, 1940 and to this union five children were born, Kay, Sue Melbourne, Laura and Beverlee. They lived south of Vernon where they farmed and ranched until 1960. They then moved the family to the ranch southwest of Wray.
Ruth worked at the Engel Packing Plant for years. She also painted and papered with her sister, Bertha. She was devoted to family, farming and ranching with her husband. Dad always said Mom was the best hired hand he ever had.
She loved playing ball with their kids and all the grandkids. Her hobbies were sewing, embroidery, quilting, crocheting, flower design and bowling. She was also very active with many area home demonstration clubs. She loved to follow all her kids and grandkids in their school and sporting events. She was a fabulous cook and canned her garden produce, if you ever left her home hungry it was your own fault. She enjoyed fishing and hunting and was known affectionately as Rattlesnake Ruth.
Due to declining health, Gene and Ruth moved into Wray in the fall of 2009. After Gene passed away in 2011, Ruth moved to Otis to be closer to family in the spring of 2013. This "Sweet Lady" was never forgotten in her old community and she was welcomed into her new home and church family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 70 years, Eugene, daughter, Kay and husband, George, daughter Laura, son-in-law Rick, grandchild, Shawn, brothers, George and Henry and sisters, Bertha and Mabel.
She is survived by daughter, Sue and husband, John Peterson of Poway, California: son Melbourne and wife, Connie of Longmont; daughter, Beverlee Eskew of Otis; 17 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church in Otis, Colorado at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Randall Feather officiating. Interment in Glendale Cemetery in Vernon, Colorado."
Mabel Engel Dvoracek
1931–1985 is buried in Vernon # 80179756.
Mabel Kathryn Engel married John Edwin Heindel on October 3, 1951 in Yuma County.
They're in Omaha, Nebraska in 1956, John an inspector for Chev Motor Division,
living at 5304 N. 36th Street.
(John's father Theo A. Heindel 1905-1967 is buried in Wray # 81626627.
His mother Dora M. Heindel 1905-1995 is also buried there # 81626278.)
Theodore Heindel, 25, a salesman born in Colorado to Wm. Heindel and Letha Reynold,
married Dora Upchurch 25, on May 25, 1930 in Lucas County, Ohio.
George Engel, 22, of Vernon,
and Violet Shaffer, 20, of Cope, married in Yuma County on April 11, 1938. Henry F. martens, a minister of Yuma, performed the marriage, witnessed by Errm Shaffer and Leo Shaffer.
Violet Blanche Shaffer was born June 8, 1917 at Cope to Roy I. Shaffer and Ida E. Conant, dyin gMay 29, 2005.
In 1940 George is farming in
Yuma County, 24, with Violet 22 and ten-month-old Patricia. All were born in Colorado.
George, born April 2, 1916
to Frank H. Engel and Margretha A. Wall, died October 1, 2001.
Patricia Elaine Emgel and Julius Dale Wiant married in Washington County, Colorado on June 8, 1957.
