April 1899 " A. J. Wakefield's neighbors gave him quite a surprise the latter part of March; about 22 teams met at his place and put in 65 acres of wheat for him."

March 1900 "John Eastcn, brother-in-law of A. J. Wakefield, arrived from Denison, Crawford Co. Ia., with car and slock, and will make this his home.

August 1901 "A. J. Wakefield, J. Eastln and O. Crouse will start for Greeley iu a few days."
October 1904 "Mr. A. J. Wakefield for Sheriff resides 8 miles south west of Vernon in Vernon Precinct.
His friends are legion snd he is known far any near for his honesty nnd upright dealing.
Hr had had two misfortunes running a corn sheller, losing one or more fingers from each hand,
snd while these accidents have msdr his farm work hard to perform, he has ever faithfully toiled on and made a success of farming and stock raising.
The loss of his few fingers will in no way prevent him from performing the duties of the Sheriff's office,
but his deserving qualities and never failing duty to his party has won for him a warm spot in
the hearts of the Republican party in the county and they will elect him by a very large majority."
October 1906 "Emmett Sechrist of Vernon has sold his mercantile business, Jesse Stevens and A. J. Wakefield being the purchasers. The Gazette has not learned Mr. Sechrist's future intentions."
December 1906 "James A. Marion of Leon, Iowa, arrived in Wray Tuesday to take a survey of Yuma county and to visit his brothers-in-law: O. W. Kohlman, A. J. Wakefield and J. C. Eastin.
He will remain several weeks before returning home and may decide to make his home here."
January 1907 "J. A. Marvin, of Decatur county, Iowa, left Monday for his home at that place,
after a three weeks visit with his brothers-in-law, O. W. Kohlmnn, J. C. Eastin, and A. J. Wakefield."
June 1908 "J. A. Marvin, a brother-in-law of O. W. Kohlman, and U. G. Wakefield, a brother of A. J. Wakefield of Vernon, are visiting their relatives.
They started overland in wagons from Iowa on April 6th , and it was their intention to cross the mountains, but when they reached Colorado Springs they found that on account of the snow they would be
unable to cross, so turned back."
July 1909 "A. J. Wakefield and family moved into their new house Monday."
October 1911 "Jake Pipes and his wife are out from Iowa on a visit at A. J. Wakefield's. Mrs. Pipes is a sister to Jack."
June 1913 "Mrs. A. H. Davis of Mentavalle, Missouri, and her two daughters, Mesdames Ethel May and Esta Creek, arrived in Wray last Sunday and were met here by 0. W. Kohlman of Vernon precinct.
Mrs. Davis is a sister of Mesdames Kohlman, J. C. Eastin and Mr. A. J. Wakefield. They will visit their relatives in this county a short time. "
September 1915 "The A. J. Wakefield half section south of Vernon was sold to Wm. McNivit of Lamoni, Iowa, who will make his home here in the future."

November 1936 "Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Wakefield entertained Sunday at dinner at their home near Vernon. A delicious menu was served the guests. Those who attended the affair were: Mr. and Mrs. Bill Davis, Mr. and Mrs. Whirl Rock, Mr. and Mrs. Orval Crouse, Mrs. Sue Kohlman, and Miss Angie Eastman."
"Andrew Jackson Wakefield was born at Pleasanton, Iowa, May 22, 1863 and passed away at his home in Vernon, Aug. 9, 1940 at the age of 77 years,
2 months and 17 days, being ill only a few days. He grew to manhood in Cainsville, Mo., where he was married to Sara Eastin on March 3, 1881, and where he lived until the year of 1887,
then with his family came to Beaver Crossing, Nebr., where they spent one year,
coming to Colorado in the spring of 1888 in a covered wagon where he located on a homestead
eleven miles south west of Vernon, where he resided until the year 1906 when he moved to Vernon and entered the mercantile business. He served as postmaster until 1911,
and near Vernon. To this union and near Vernon. To this union was born 5 children,
Mabel Stinson, a daughter, preceded him in death March 2, 1928.
Surviving him are his wife and four children,
Mrs. Nettie Stevens and Arch Wakefield of Vernon, Frank Wakefield of Eckley and Nellie Lohman of Wray,
9 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Piper and Mrs. S. D. Kohiman of Vernon, one brother, Grant Wakefield of Paradise, Calif,
beside a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Vernon Methodist church on Sunday at 1:30 p. m. with Rev. White in charge."

August 1946 "Mrs. Nettie Stevens, who has been living at Colorado Springs since she recently sold her place at Vernon, purchased the Mrs. Hattie Nichols residence in west Wray when it was sold at auction Saturday afternoon. The price was $5,500, it is reported by M. J. Price, who auctioneered the sale. "

"Jesse C. Stevens, son of James W. and Viola B. (Poplin) Stevens, was born
near Shenandoah, Iowa, on February 28, 1879. He died at Colorado Springs,
Colorado, November 25, 1949.
The family lived for a number of years in Iowa, then a short time at Laddonia, Missouri.
In 1887 they came to Colorado and settled on the farm south and a little
east of Eckley. In July, 1898, he married Nettie Wakefield.
To this union one daughter was born, Mrs. Leora Jones of Husted, Colo. Mr. Stevens was well known here.
For thirty years he carried mail on the rural route out from Vernon, but
for the past ten or fifteen years he has been in failing health.
Mr. Stevens was divorced, and sometime iater married Mrs. Clover Geers.
In addition to his wife and his daughter, he leaves two brothers:
Wilburn Stevens of Eckley and Robert Stevens of Denver,
three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren;
a number of nieces and nephews with other more distant relatives
and friends. A sister died in 1914, and his father in 1916.
Only two years ago in August his mother preceded him in death.
The funeral service was at two o'clock Sunday in the Eckley Community Church, with burial in the Eckley Cemetery. Rev. Moore Bell preached and the Law Mortuary of Colorado Springs was in charge.
Out-of-town relatives and friends who attended the services were his
wife, Mrs. Jesse Stevens, of Colorado Springs; Mrs. Iris Howell of
Cheyenne; Clarence L. Saunders of Colorado Springs;
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jones and Darrell of Husted;
Mrs. Virginia Bruce and Irene of Colorado Springs;
Robert Stevens and grandson Dennis Hall of Denver;
Mr. and Mrs. Perry Taylor of Holyoke. "

October 7, 1910 "Arthur Lohman and Miss Nellie Wakefield were united in marriage at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Lohman south of Wray last Saturday evening at 6 o'clock by Rev. J. S. Rouse. The groom is well known in Yuma county and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. August Lohman and bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Wakefield of Vernon and has a large circle of acquaintances.
They will be at home on the Roy Cuney farm southeast of Wray."

"Mrs. Art Lohman, a life-long resident of this community, died Friday at the Wray
Community hospital. Her death followed a long period of declining health and many weeks of
critical illness. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Wray Methodist church, conducted by Rev P. A. Kostenko and Rev. Don Castonia of the Seventh
Day Adventist church. Burial followed in Grandview cemetery.
Nell Wakefield Lohman, daughter of Jack and Sarah Wakefield, was born on a farm south of Vernon May 18, 1893. She was the youngest of a family of five.
She was united in marriage to Art Lohman at the Ed Lohman farm south of Wray on October 1, 1910. The couple lived on a farm south of Wray until they built a new home and moved to Wray in 1951.
She passed away at the Wray Community hospital March 9, 1956, at the age of 62 years and
nine months.
Besides her devoted husband, she leaves to mourn one sister. Mrs. Nettie Stevens of Wray;
two brothers, Arch Wakefield who resides south of Vernon, and Frank Wakefield of Wray, and many other relatives."
