Delbert Stanbrough BIRTH 9 Dec 1906 Missouri, DEATH 18 Apr 1935 Wray, Yuma County, Colorado, BURIAL Grandview Cemetery Wray, Yuma County, Colorado, MEMORIAL ID 14531478.
"After apparently making an unsuccessful attempt to escape from the Yuma County Jail at Wray, Delbert Stanbrough, 29, held as a suspect in the robbery of the Joe Gist beer parlor at Yuma Wednesday night of last week, tied his necktie about his neck and to the water pipe in the outer room of the jail and hung himself. Stanbrough's lifeless body was found hanging by the improvised noose by Sheriff Raymond Van Horn shortly before seven o'clock last Friday morning. He had been placed in the jail the previous evenling, following his removal from Yuma where he was arrested with a companion, Charles Derr, who was also being held here, but in the city jail in the basement of the town hall.
The two men were alleged to have broke into and robbed Gisi's beer parlor and were captured early Thursday morning in a barn in the south part of Yuma after a chase of several hours by county and city officers. At the time of the arrest, Stanbrough's companion gave his name as Davis. Both had served terms in the Colorado State penitentiary.
When brought to Wray Thursday evening, the suspects were separated by the officers. Stanbrough, who was taken to the county jail, was placed in the inner cell by Under Sheriff Price and the door to the cell was secured with a log chain and padlock. Apparently Stanbrough had liberated himself from the small cell with a small piece of steel from the pipes around the cell with which he had forced the padlock. After liberating himself from the inner cell he mads an attempt to force his way from the outer jail, tearing off an iron bar from a jail seat and attempting to pry the casing from the southeast window of the jail. Failing in this, he scratched a note to his wife with a piece of metal on the back of a cardboard checkerboard, placed this note, his ring and the clasp from his necktie on a table in the jail and ended his life.
Discovering the body, Sheriff Van Horn immediately summoned Deputy District Attorney Webb D. Martin and County Coroner Paul E. Morris of Yuma, and then, with the assistance of Under Sheriff Price, Bob Duckworth and George Baker, cut down the body.
The body was viewed and photographed by the coroner who ruled that an inquest was unnecessary.
Relatives of the dead man were notified and his wife, his father, Nelson Stanbrough of Alma, Colo., a sister, Mrs. Delyn Kraft and her husband, S. L. Kraft of Snyder, Colo., and another sister, Beulah Davies and her husband, BL iM. Davies of Trinidad, Colo., came to Wray to claim the body. He is also survived by an eight year old daughter, another sister and a brother.
The remains were prepared for burial by the Hitchcock Funeral Home in Wray and were buried in Grandview cemetery with a short service at the cemetery conducted by Rev. Clark Bower at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon.
The wife and child will go to Trinidad with his sister to make their home, it is said. According to local officers, Derr has agreed to plead guilty to his part in the robbery when he is arraigned before Judge Arlington Taylor at the present term of the district; court, now in session here."
