Charles L. and Elizabeth A. (Hickerson) Brown , Wray

In 1900 Monroe County, Missouri, Charles L. Brown is farming, born March 1861,
married 16 years to Lizzie March 1863, with Orba H. July 1890, Bonnie B. August 1891,
Gladys October 1892, Oliver J. June 1895, and James Aug 1896, all born in Missouri.
In 1910 Tillman County, Oklahoma, Charles L. Brown is 44, married to Lizzie 43, both born in Missouri. She's had seven kids, six living.
Bonnie B. is 19, born in Missouri, Oliver J. 14 and James S. 12 in Colorado, Charles L. 6 in Missouri, and Alice 4 in Missouri.
(James Hickerson was also in Tillman County in 1910 - perhaps that's why Lizzie and Charles were there.)
Charles proved up two quarters in section 6, 2N 44W in 1919.
January 1, 1942 "Funeral services for Mrs. Chas. L. Brown,
who expired Tuesday night cf last week, were held Friday at
3:30 o'clock at the Christian church, conducted by Rev. Lloyd M. Balfour
and burial was in Grandview cemetery.
Elizabeth Ann Hickerson was born to Mr. and Mrs. James S. Hickerson,
June 14th, 1865, near Middle Grove, Missouri, and passed away at her home in
west Wray, December 23, 1941.
She was married to Chas. L. Brown March 12, 1884.
To this union seven children were born: Orba H. of Beecher Island,
Oliver J. of Vernon, James S. and C. L. Jr., and Amy Hahn all of near Wray
who were near at the time of her death, and Bonnie and Gladys,
who preceded her in death.
Besides the above mentioned,
she leaves her husband, one sister, Mary Ehrhardt of Centralia, Missouri,
three brothers, Tom, Jim and Charlie of Oklahoma, 28 grandchildren,
and numerous less near relatives.
She moved with her family to Colorado in 1892. With the exception of a
few years spent in Oklahoma and Missouri, she had lived in or
near Wray since. She accepted Christ as her Saviour in 1899
and joined the Christian church near her old home in Missouri.
She was a loving wife and mother and well respected in the community."
June 2, 1949 " C. L. Brown, Sr., who came to this community in 1892 and had spent
t most of the remainder of his life here, died Tuesday at the Community
hospital following a brief illness, at the age of 88 years, two months and 19 days.
Mr. Brown was well liked in the community which had been his home for so many
years. He was an interesting person. His parents, he remembered, had once owned
slaves and he was raised by a freed slave woman who had once seen
George Washington and who lived to be 112 years old.
He was an accomplished woodsman in his youth and caring for trees,
cutting down the older ones and turning them into wood remained a hobby
with him until his death. He practiced his woodcutting and tree trimming
in the spacious yard that surrounded his home in west Wray.
Funeral services for Mr. Brown will be held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock
at the Christian church with Rev. R .E. Kinsell officiating.
Interment will be at Grandview cemetery.
Charles Livingston Brown was born March 12, 1861, to Jacob and Mary Brown
in Centralia, Mo. He died at Wray on May 31, 1949.
He was married to Elizabeth Ann Hickerson on March 12, 1884, and to them
seven children were born. Orba Brown, James Brown, Charles Brown, Jr.,
and Amy Hahn, all of Wray, survive their father.
Gladys, Bonnie and Ollie preceded him in death.
In 1892 the family moved to Colorado. Later they left for a time,
but returned in 1914 and since then Mr. Brown has lived in or near Wray.
His beloved wife passed away on December 23, 1941.
Besides the children, survivors included 29 grandchildren,
11 great grandchildren, and one sister, Lucy Dry, of Madison, Missouri.
Mr. Brown affiliated with the Christian church in 1890.
He lived an honorable, upright life and was respected by the community."
GLADYS
One tree said Gladys Betty Brown died in 1908 in Oklahoma City.
CHARLES
Charles Livingston Brown and Pearl Margaret Tombaugh married in Yuma County on March 12, 1934.

Son of Celebrating Couple Was Wed To Pearl Tombaugh
Monday, March 12, was an eventful day in the C. L. Brown family
of northwest of Wray. On that day Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Brown, widely
known residents of this community, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary
and on the same day, their son Charles Livingston Brown and
Miss Pearl Margaret Tombaugh were united in marriage.
The golden wedding was observed with a huge cafeteria dinner at the
Brown home with more than eighty relatives and friends, coming from all
parts of the county, joining with Mr. and Mrs. Brown in honor of the happy event.
Among the guests were their children, Orba, Ollie, Jamie, Mrs. Amy Hahn and C. L.
Brown, Jr., who was also the day's bridegroom.
The marriage of the younger
C. L. Brown and Miss Tombaugh was performed by Rev. Clark Bower
at the Christian Church parsonage Monday morning.
The impressive single ring ceremony was used and the couple were
attended by Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Van Horn. The bride is a daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Lee A. Tombaugh and both of the young people are widely
known and popular with their acquaintances.
The Gazette joins with the
many friends of the Brown family in extending congratulations
to them on the occasion of these two happy events."
In 1940 Wray, C.L. Jr. is farming, 34, with Pearl 28, Barbara 5, and Mary 3.
His nephew, Charles, (son of Orba), 25, is with them.
Charles L. Brown, born April 17, 1904 in Monroe County, Missouri, died September 22, 1979 in Holyoke, COlorado.
He's buried in Wray # 17035893, with Pearl 1912-2002 # 17036546.
OLIVER
April 29, 1943 "Oliver J. Brown, prominent and highly respected citizen
of Vernon, died at the Wray hospital Saturday. His condition had been serious
for more than a week, following an emergency operation for a stomach perforation.
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Christian church
in Wray, conducted by Rev. Lloyd M. Balfour, and burial was in Grandview cemetery.
The church was thronged with friends and neighbors who knew Mr. Brown as a
loyal friend, and as a public spirited citizen.
Oliver Jacob Brown, fourth son of C. L. and Elizabeth Brown was born
June 5, 1895 in Arapahoe County, Wray, Colorado. He departed this life,
April 24, 1943, at the age of 47 years, 10 months, and 19 days.
On June 7 1920, he was united in marriage to Anna Margaret Klein of Wray.
In 1922 the couple moved to Vernon, where he had lived until his death.
He had served as blacksmith for the past twenty years in Vernon.
Mr. and Mrs. Brown were the parents of four children,
who are Robert K., Margaret C., Amy Marie, and Bernard L. Brown.
The children survive their parents.
Mr. Brown was preceded in death
by his wife, Anna, his mother, Mrs. C. L. Brown, Sr.,
one sister, Betty; Gladys Brown and a brother, Bonnie B. Brown.
Besides his children Mr. Brown is survived by his father C. L. Brown, Sr.,
three brothers, Orba H. Brown, James S., and Charles L., Jr.
and one sister, Mrs. Amy Hahn. There are also a number of nieces
and nephews as well as a host of friends and neighbors."
Anna M. Brown 1894-1932 is buried in Wray # 17035830.
So is Oliver Jacob Brown 1895-1943 # 17036533.
ORBA
Orba was born July 13, 1885 in Union, Monroe County, Missouri.
Orba, 28, married Ruth Fisher in Yuma County on November 26, 1913.
"At the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Cox in East Wray. Wednesday evening,
November 26, occurred the marriage of Miss Ruth Fisher and Orba Brown.
Judge Jennings performing the ceremony at the hour of eight-thirty in the evening.
Those present at the marriage were Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Cox, Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Cox,
Mr. and Mrs. Harve Cox, Mr. and Mrs. John Galbreath and Mrs. Anna Cunningham,
the last named being a sister of the bride.
Miss Fisher is the third daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Fisher whose home is twelve miles south of Wray on the
Dry Willow, but has made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Cox for the past
three years.
Mr. Brown is a young homesteader of ten miles northwest of Wray, and the young couple intend making their home there."
September 27, 1951 "Mrs. Orba Brown, a life-long resident of this area
and mother of a widely known family, died at her home in the Beecher
Island neighborhood Sunday after a long illness.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Wray Wednesday afternoon,
conducted by Rev. Robert Seals and Rev. Wm. R. Farmer,
and interment was at Grandview cemetery.
Ruth Fisher, daughter of Milton and Rosa Mauer Fisher, was born
in Cheyenne county, Kansas, on March 18, 1893, and died September 23, 1951,
at the age of 58 years, 6 months and 5 days. She was one of eleven children.
When a small child she moved with her parents to Colorado to the Dry Willow near
Beecher Island where she grew to womanhood. She was baptized in the Christian
church while in her youth.
On November 26, 1913, she was united in marriage with Orba H. Brown
and the couple homesteaded north of Wray. Since 1919 they have made their
home at Eckley, Vernon, and in late years at Beecher Island.
Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Brown.
Minor H. Brown preceded his mother in death. The surviving children are
Charles M. of Arkada, Calif., Mrs. Rosa E. Bray, Lloyd L., and Pauline E. Guinn
of Vernon, Keith E. of Beecher, Opal V. Ruth of Fort Morgan,
and Willber W. and Willard W., twins, who have been serving with the
U. S. Army in Korea and were allowed to return home for their mother's funeral.
Besides the children, survivors include the husband; her mother,
Mrs. Rosa Fisher of Wray; three sisters, Rosa Cox, Emma Brown of Wray
and Maud Cox of Colorado Springs; four brothers, Jake, Mike and Sam Fisher
of Yuma County and Joe Fisher of lowa. There are also ten grandchildren,
three step-grandchildren and other relatives.
Two brothers, one sister and her father, preceded Mrs. Brown in death.
Mrs. Brown will be remembered as a mother with deep devotion for
her family, a good neighbor and friend."

JAMES
Anna F. Hahn proved up 320 acres in section 21, 2N 44W in 1921.
She married James S. Brown on June 2, 1921 in Wray, the ceremony performed by W. J. Gatley of the M.E. Church, withnesses E. L. Brown Jr. and Elizabeth Hahn, and Edward E. Hahn.
In 1940 Wray, James Brown is a laborer, 43, born in Colorado, with Anna F. 44 in Nebraska. Elmer 17, Donald 15, Fern 14, Laura 12, Esther 11, Ross 10, may 8, Philip 6, LaVone 4, and Ruby 1 wee all born in Colorado.
They're next to widowed Nettie Brown 63 born in Michigan and J. Wesley 28 born in COlorado.
Anna 1894-1984 is buried in Wray # 17035826,
with James Samuel Brown 1896-1970 # 17036291.
Their son Max A. Brown 1932-1986 is buried in Eckley
# 47657270, with Audrey Joyce (Probasco) Brown 1932-2016.
Elmer Roy Brown was born August 3, 1922 in Wray, dying December 20, 1993.
He's buried in Wray # 17036038.
Donald Brown and Carol Myers both of Wray, married in Wray on September 4, 1948.
Donald E. Brown 1924-1977 # 17035943 is buried in Wray. Possibly his wife is Carolyn J. Brown 1929-2001 # 17035881 buried in Wray.
September 1949 "Mrs. Archie Anderson was hostess at
a bridal shower for Laura Mae Brown at the Fred Lippert
home on Wednesday of last week. The afternoon was spent
by playing Kootie after which delicious refreshments were
served. Those who enjoyed the occasion were the
Mesdames Edna Gillette, Clara Wingfield, Rosa Bray,
Evelyn Brown, Jim Brown, Bertha Chartier, Harm Anderson,
Caroline Couch, Lena Theen of Hastings,
Lizzie Hahn and the Misses Lavon and Ruby Brown,
Shirley and Phyllis Chartier."

Laura May Brown and Robert Lynn Chartier, both 22, married in Wray on September 7, 1949.
Robert is buried in Wray 1927-2010 # 50042986.
Esther Geneva (Brown) Palmer 1929-2008 is buried in Boulder # 23888154.
"Esther Geneva (Brown) Palmer passed to eternal life on January 4, 2008, two weeks short of her 79th birthday. She was making her home with her daughter's family in Bealeton, Virginia, at the time of her death.
Esther was born on the family homestead in Wray, Colorado to James Samuel Brown and Anna Francis (Hahn) Brown, on January 19, 1929, the fifth of 10 children. At an early age she came to a deep love for Jesus Christ, and she took joy all her life in sharing her commitment to Him.
Her husband was Daniel Edward Palmer of Boulder.
Survivors are: her sisters, Fern Lippert of Wray,
Laura Mae Chartier and her husband Bob, and La Vone Thomas,
all of Laird, CO
and Ruby Brownlee and her husband Lynn of Greeley;
her brother Phil Brown and his wife Mary Ann of Hermiston,
Oregon; her children..."

La Vone K. Brown and Gene R. Overdorff, both of Spokane, Washington,
married there on March 5, 1949.
BONNIE
Bonnie Bufford Brown registered for WWI in Wray, born August 10, 1891 at Centralia, Missouri, working for parents.
Bonnie B. Brown proved up a quarter in section 5, 2N 44W in 1919.
"Claimant names as witnesses: James P. Wilson, Archibald J. Wilson,
Noble C. Smithson and Elmer A. Backus, all of Wray, Colorado."
Bonnie died in 1920, buried in Wray # 17035867.
