William R. and Laura M. (VanHorn) Jones, Wray


In 1880 Crawford County, Illinois, James Vanhorn is farming, 62, born in Pennsylvania, Caroline 56 Virginia, Howard 21 and James 18 in Ohio, and Laura 11 in Illinois.

James, age 72, died March 6, 1889 in Platte Township, Union County, Iowa.

Margaret VanHorn married Alvah Stiles - in Nebraska in 1885. Alva is in the Nebraska State Hospital in Hastings in 1910 and 1920.

Howard B. Vanhorn, son of James R. VanHorn and Caroline Rice, age 27, married Martha E. Jones on Sept 16, 1885 in Union County, Iowa.

Howard B. VanHorn 1859-1936 is buried in Stockton, Rooks County, Kansas # 62964789.

In 1900 Lincoln, Nebraska, William Jones is a day laborer, born April 1858 in Indiana, married 14 years to Laura M. Feb 1864 Illinois. Ernest A. June 1889, Alta M. March 1891 and Ray W. Sept 1892, all three born in Iowa. Her mother Caroline Van Horn, widowed, born June 1825 in Virginia, with two of six kids still living, is with them.

In 1910 Phillips County, Kansas, W.R. is a retail merchant, 51, Laura M. 41, Ernest A. 20, Alta M. 19, Ray W. 17, Leola G. 10, Marguerite P. 7, Wm. R. Jr. 5, and Ermyl 1.

June 13, 1920 Wray Rattler "The death of William Robert Jones, whose home was about five miles north of Vernon, occurred the first of the week. The funeral services were held at the residence Tuesday, burial being at Grand View, Dr. D. A. Brown officiating. Deceased was a highly respected citizen, loved and respected by all for his piety, his neighborliness and his always willingness to be a friend in time of need. He leaves three sons and four daughters, beside the wife, to mourn his demise, and to them the sympathy of all friends is extended."

William Robert Jones 1858-1918 is buried in Wray # 47590652.

Selba H. Baugh of Wray filed for land in 20, 3N 43W in 1918, witnesses John Haun, Ora Redding, Alva N. Wilkins, and WIlliam Toffelmeyer.

1922 "Mrs. Jay Patchen, who had been visiting her sister, Mrs. Selba Baugh, came home Saturday evening."
1922 "Mrs. Laura Jones spent Friday afternoon with her daughter, Mrs. Selba Baugh, in Laird."

Selba married Alta Mae Jones October 7, 1917, in Laird.

Selby Henry Baugh registered in Wray, saying he was born September 8, 1893 in Unionville, Missouri, and was caring for his mother.


Alta M. (Jones) Baugh proved up two quarters in sections 26 and 27, 2N 43W in 1919.

In 1920 Yuma County, Selba H. 26, is married to Alta M. 28, and they have Robert A., eleven months.



In 1920 Yuma County, Laura M. Jones is farming, widowed, 51, born in Illinois. Margauerite 19, William R. 15, adn Ermyl C. 11 were born in Kansas.

June 1922 "A real estate deal whereby Mr. Schultz of the Dry Willow neighborhood became the owner of the farm of Selba Baugh was made recently by the exchange for the farm of rental property in Junction City, Kansas."

ARTHUR

Because Arthur is not listed on the 1900 or 1910 census with them, he likely died before 1900.

RAY

In 1920 Lincoln, Nebraska, Ray is a railroad machinist, 27, with Greta 25.
Ray W. Jones and Greta Wagner had Robert Edward Jones on June 16, 1922 in Lincoln.

In 1930 Saunders County, Nebraska, Ray is a garage mechanic, 37, born in Iowa, with Greta 35 in Nebraska, married eleven years. Robert E. is 7, James L. 5, both born in Nebraska.

Ray Weaver Jones 1892-1936 is buried in Ashland, Saunders County # 41928848.

Greta is widowed in 1940 Saunders County, 48, with Robert 17, James 15, and Margaret 9.

Greta 1895-1958 is on the same stone # 41928840.

The Robert E. Jones 1922-2000 buried in Ashland is possibly their son # 41928849.

Margaret E. (Jones) Larson 1930-2007 is also buried in Ashland # 41946918.

ERNEST

Ernest Alson Jones was born June 27, 1889 at Kent, Union County, Iowa, and was living in Evertt, Washington in 1955. at 2002 Virginia Avenue.

Ernest registered for WWI in Lincoln, Nebraska, a live insurance solicitor, married, livinga t 2126 K Street in Lincoln.

In 1920 Yuma County, Earnest is farming, 31, born in Iowa, with Mary J. 30 born in Illinois.

1922 " Ernest Jones and wife came over from Stratton, Colo., where Mr. Jones is employed and spent Saturday night and Sunday with Mrs. Laura Jones and children."

Ernest Alson Jones of Ponca, Nebraska, married Doris Agnes Long of Wayne Nebraska 21, born at Wimmetson Nebraska on May 29, 1930. This was Ernest's second marriage.

In 1942 Ernest registered for WWII, with Doris A Jones living at 2926 Colby, Everett, Washington.

Ernest 1889-1970 is buried in Everett, Washington # 128323778, with Doris Agnes (Long) Jones 1910-2007 # 128323562.

Doris A. Jones died on October 19, 2007, in Winslow, Washington. She was born in Nebraska, but lived in Everett, Washington since 1936. Mrs. Jones worked for many years in the field of child welfare, four years of which were as Chief Probation Officer, Snohomish County Juvenile Court. She retired in 1972 from the position of Assistant Professor, School of Social Work at the University of Washington. She moved to Bainbridge Island, WA to be with family in 2004.
Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest A. Jones in 1970; and her sister, Ruby Brissing in 1969.
She is survived by a nephew and niece, Peter Brissing and Mary Jane Hynes ,of Bainbridge Island.
She was a member of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, Massachusetts and the Everett Branch Church.

LEILA

October 17, 1918 "Royal Woods of Haigler, Nebraska, and Miss Leala Grace Jones of Laird, were married in Wray yesterday, Dr. D. A. Brown pronouncing the ceremony."

March 1923 "Mr. and Mrs. Royal Woods of near Haigler came up and spent Sunday at the home of Mrs. Woods mother, Mrs. Laura Jones. Ermyl Jones was absent from school last week on account of sickness."

Leola Grace Woods 1900-1976 is buried in Haigler # 36965270, with Royal 1897-1990.

Royal Woods III, 92, of Wray, Colorado, passed away on July 30, 2014. The funeral service was held at the Wray United Methodist Church on August 2, 2014.
Royal was born in Benkelman, Nebraska on August 16, 1921 to Royal and Leola (Jones) Woods, II . He graduated from Haigler High School and continued on to the Grand Island School of Business in Grand Island, Nebraska. Royal was inducted into the US Army in 1945 and honorably discharged in 1947, serving in counter-intelligence.
Royal was married to Helen Brumley on March 12, 1950. They were married 64 years and to this union were born Marcia Gustin, Royal (Woody) Woods IV, and Bruce Woods.
Royal worked as a farmer/rancher his entire life. Even after moving to Wray, Colorado, in 1987, Royal drove to Haigler on a daily basis to continue helping with the family ranch until March of 2009. Royal served on the Haigler School District Board of Education, Farm Credit Services Board of Directors, ASCS/FSA County Committee, as a Youth Baseball Coach, and a member of the Haigler American Legion Post 134. Although active in the community, family was very important to Royal and he had a musical ditty for every situation.
Royal is survived by and will be deeply missed by his wife,Helen Woods; Marcia and spouse Brian Gustin; Woody and spouse Stephanie, children Austin and Danielle, Branden and Sydney, Megan, and Morgan Woods; Bruce and spouse Valerie, children Brianna, Shelby and Russell, and Seth Woods; great grandchildren Madison, Bryson, and Jaxyn Woods; sister Laura Pearl Wall and brother Donald Woods, and other family and friends.
Royal is preceded in death by parents, Royal Jr. and Leola Jones Woods, sister Mildred Waters, and brother Raymond Woods.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 2, 2014, 10:00 a.m. at the Wray United Methodist Church in Wray, Colorado with Rev. Norman Stott and Rev. Terry Douglass officiating. Interment was in the Haigler Cemetery in Haigler, Nebraska. Memorials may be made to the Haigler American Legion Post #134. Spellman-Schmidt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


July 1923 "Ermyl Jones is spendng the week with her sister, Mrs. Royal Woods, of near Haigler."

December 1923 "Mr. and Mrs. Selba Baugh and children spent Saturday night and Sunday at the home of Mrs. Baugh's mother, Mrs. Laura Jones."

In 1930 Selba H. Baugh, 27, is a farm worker in Lincoln Nebraska, married to Alta 39, Iowa.  They have Robert A. 13, and Virginia L. 5, both Colorado.  Mother-in-law Laura M. Jones, 61 widowed, Illinois, and brother-in-law William R. Jones 25 and sister-in-law Emyl C. Jones 21 are also with them.   William has no occupation, and Emyl is a stenographer.


Laura Mae Jones 1869-1935 is buried in Wray # 48709314.

WILLIAM

William Robert Jones was born on October 7, 1904, at Woodruff, Kansas, to William and Laura (Van Horn) Jones Sr. He died at Kearney, Nebraska, on January 19, 1989.
In September 1911 the family moved to a farm in Yuma County, Colorado. William Jones Sr. died in 1918. In 1924, William, his sister, Ermyl, and their mother moved to Ashland, Nebraska, where he entered high school and finished the course in three years.
He attended Cotner College in Lincoln and graduated from Wayne State College. He taught, in rural schools in Dundy County, Nebraska, and obtained a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He was superintendent of schools in Haigler, Danbury, Wilsonville, Stockton and Pleasanton. He retired in 1974 after 41 years of teaching.
William (Bill) married Arlene Havlik at Haigler, Nebraska, on August 21, 1938. Two sons were born to them, Stanley in 1942 and Dean in 1946. The Jones family was active in church and community affairs in every town in which they had lived.
He was a member of the First Christian Church of Kearney, served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher, served on many committees and sang in the choir. He had attended choir practice the evening before his death. He was a member of the Kearney Area Retired Teachers and the Ft. Kearny Rock Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Arthur, Ernest and Ray; and three sisters; Alta Baugh, Leola Woods and Ermyl King.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene, of Kearney; sons, Stanley and his wife, Dannien, and Dean and his wife, Dianne; three grandchildren. Dawnette, Brady and Carmen, all of Kearney; one sister, Marguerite Patchen of North Platte; three sisters-in-law, Jennette Keeney of Boise, Idaho, Kathleen Early of Denver, Colorado, and Doris Jones of Everett, Washington; brother-in-law. Royal Woods II of Wray, Colorado, and many nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted from the First Christian Church in Kearney with Revs. John and Dana Keener officiating.
Burial was at the Kearney Cemetery.

ERMYL

In 1940 Clallam County, Washington, Emeryl Carrol Jones is 31, born in Kansas, is living alone, a stenographer for an employment service. She was in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1935.

Ermyl Jones and Ralph Raymond King, both of Kitsap County, married at the Navy Yard City Bible Church in Bremerton on March 29, 1960.

Ermyl C. King 1909-1968 is buried in Bremerton, Washington # 172723573. Ralph is also buried there 1910-1971 # 172723593.
