CHARLES' PARENTS

In 1860 Bertrand, Berrien County, Michigan, James H. Key is 44, Rebecca 39, Simon 14, Mary J. 11, Susan 9, Louisa 6, and ALICE 4.

One tree said Alice, born October 27, 1855 in Berrien County, died January 27 , 1905 in Beatrice, Nebraska.

James H. Key 1814-1863 is buried in Berrien County # 144150347.
So is Rebecca (Jackson)(Key) (Holton) Ferry 1819-1907 # 144150710.

Married 1st to James Key, 2nd to Henry Holton and 3rd to Charles Ferry.
Rebecca Ferry was buried in the same lot as her 1st and 2nd husbands.
The South Bend Tribune Weekly carried an obituary for Rebecca Ferry and it reads: "Rebecca Ferry Is Dead. Well Known Woman Passes Away Near New Carlisle. New Carlisle, Ind., Jan 23. - Mrs. Rebecca Ferry passed away near New Carlisle Sunday, at the age of 87 years. Mrs. ferry was a daughter of William and Catherine Jackson and was born Aug. 18, 1819 in Dayton, O., where she spent her childhood and youth. In 1835 she was married to James Key, who passed away in 1863. Nine children were born to them, seven girls and two boys, of which three daughters and one son survive. The children are Mrs. Catherine Alcott, of Galien, Mich.; Mrs. Jane Cowger of Harveysville, Kan,; Mrs. Louisa Massey, of New Carlisle, and Simon Key , of Monroe, Ind. Mrs. Ferry was married in 1867 to Henry Holton, who passed away two years later. She was again married in 1871 to Charles Ferry, who also preceded in 1893. For the last few years she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Massey, in New Carlisle, where she passed away."

(Mary J. Key Farran, widowed, born in Indiana about 1854 to James Key and Rebecca Jackson, married J. H. Cowger on Septermber 21, 1898 in Creston, Union County, Iowa. She died February 4, 1936 in Everett, Washington.)
John Farran 1829-1892 is buried in Union County, Iowa # 21901107.
"DIED--at his residence in Dodge township, on October 7th, 1892, John Farran, aged 63 years 6 months and 21 days. Uncle John as he was commonly called, was born in the town of Sharedon, Ohio, March 18th, 1829. When two years old, he moved with his parents to the state of Michigan, where he was raised on a farm. He was married to Miss Mary Key, February 18, 1866 and moved to this county in 1880. He leaves a wife and one son at home, and one daughter Mrs. Samuel Galbreath in Colorado. The funeral was held at his home in Dodge township, preached by Rev. L. H. Myers. He was buried in the in Odd Fellow honors in the beautiful Cedar Grove cemetery where friends and relatives have gone before.
Mr. Farrin was a man of advanced years and was highly esteemed as a man and a citizen by a large circle of friends, who share the grief of the mourning relatives. "
Peter Nies, 22, married Nancy Alice "Kie" on September 3, 1870 in Berrien, Michigan.
In 1880 Gage County, Nebraska, Peter Nies is farming, 36, born in Prussia. Alice 23, Lizzie 9, Willis 4, and George 2 were born in Michigan, Allie four months was born in Nebraska,.

In 1900 Gage County, Peter August 1847 Germany, Alice Oct 1854 Michigan, married 30 years. William March 1876, George A. Feb 1878, Charlie P. Feb 1882, Mary Jan 1884, Emma Oct 1885, Harry Aug 1886, and Bert Sept 1891.

Peter married Mattie Stulkes, 42, born in Germany to Barnhart and Lena Stulkes, on June 25, 1906 in Beatrice.

In 1910 Gage County, Peter, married five years (his second marriage) is 60, with Mattie 46, both born in Germany. This is Mattie's firest marriage. Bert is 18, born in Nebraska.

The stone in Beatrice has "Peter Nies Aug 1, 1848 - July 1, 1911" - but the stone appears to be newer than 1911, so perhaps they dates are incorrect.

March 1911 "Some of the heirs of the late Peter Nies, the German farmer, who was killed in a mowing machine accident near Ellis a few weeks ago, are making an attempt to have the will of the deceased set aside on the .grounds that he was of unsound mind when he made the will because of the excessive use of liquor, and because it was not properly drawn up."

September 22, 1915 "BEATRICE, Neb., Sept. 22.--A. W. Claypool, aged seventy-seven, and Mrs. Mattie Nies, aged fifty-one, were married here Tuesday by Justice of the Peace H. A. LaSelle. The couple are old residents of this vicinity."

AGNES' PARENTS
In 1900 Beatrice, Nebraska, Joseph Fountain is a painter, born June 1864, Mary June 1868, both born in Illinois. Agnes May 1887 in Kansas?, Camille April 1889 Elma June 1892, and Oswald Janaury 1896 in Illinois, Maggie May 1898 in Nebraska.

Joe Fountain cash-claimed a quarter in 9, 2N 42W, Yuma County, Colorado, in 1911.
His witnesses were Charles C. Nies, Charles Miller, Frank Allen and robert Porter, all of Laird. CHARLES AND AGNES

Charley Nies 21, married Agnes Fountain on October 15, 1903 in Beatrice, Nebraska.

In 1910, next to Joseph and Mary Fountain, Charlies Nies is 28, born in Nebraska, Agnes 22 Kansas. They have Oswald 6, Dorothy 4 both born in Nebraska, and Charles eleven months born in Colorado.

Chas Nies was delinquent on taxes in 1911 for improvements the west half of the southeast quarter of 9, 2N 42 W.

Charles is a carpenter in 1920 Beatrice, Nebraska, 37, with Agnes P. 32, Oswald 15, Dorothy 13, Charlie A. 10, and Ada Jane 1.

In 1940 Charles and Agnes are in Lincoln County, Colorado, with grandson Leo C. Krivan 14 born in Nebraska. Leo was in Beatrice Nebraska in 1935.

April 22, 1941 Beatrice, Nebraska "Charles Nies, Beatrice, was booked Monday night on a charge of driving while intoxicated. He was arrested by Highway Patrolman Church on Highway 77 four and one-half miles south of Lincoln. Nies was released Tuesday to his attorney, to appqar in Municipal court May 2."

May 16, 1941 "The marriage of Dolores Louise Hansen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Horst, of Lincoln, and O. C. Nies, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles P. Nies, of Karval, Colo., was solemnized in the First Methodist church in Beatrice Thursday afternoon. The Rev. Louis H. Kaub read the lines in the presence of the immediate families. Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Gross, of Lincoln, were the attendants. The bride wore a navy sheer redingote designed with white and her accessories were in navy and white. With it, Mrs. Nies had Talisman roses and baby breath in a corsage. Following the ceremony, the bridal party returned to Lincoln. A wedding supper was served at the home of Mrs. Nies’ parents. The couple will be at home in Beatrice. Mr. Nies formerly was associated with the Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph company."

September 16, 1949 Beatrice "The marriage of Miss Eva Wiese, daughter of Mrs. Dora Wiese of Randolph, and Charles Nies of Beatrice, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles P. Nies of LaJunta, Colo., took place Saturday, Aug. 20, in the Westminster church in Lincoln. Flowers, tapers and a cross decorated the chancel of the church where the Rev. Rex Knowles performed the afternoon ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Nies of Great Bend, Kas., brother and sister-in-law of the groom, were attendants. For her marriage, the bride wore a fall suit of wine gabardine with a corsage of white gladiolas and black hat and black accessories. The matron of honor wore a fall suit of blue gabardine. The bride is a graduate of the University of Nebraska where she was affiliated with Kappa Delta sorority. She has taught at Ulysses and Auburn. Nies is a veteran of World War II, serving three years in the navy. They will live at Norfolk. He is associated with the Midwest Biscuit Co. of Burlington, Iowa. "
April 1962 Beatrice "Long-time residents of the Ellis community will be interested in an accomplishment of Charles P. Nies, now of LaJunta, Colorado, formerly of Ellis. Nies, a retired carpenter and cabinetmaker, designed and constructed a "Grandfather clock," also installing the works and the bell-tone chimes. A lifelong desire for such a clock was realized when he finished this redwood beauty.
One tree said Agnes died in 1951.



Charles a cattle rancher, born Feb 26, 1882 at Ellis Nebraska to Peter Nies and Alice Key, died in Amarillo, Texas October 19, 1971, to be buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lincoln, Nebraska.
Lincoln Nebraska "NIES - Charles, 89, Dumas, Tex., died Tuesday. Born .... Survivors: son, O. C. Nies, Dumas; daughters, Mrs. Leo Krivan, Dewitt, Mrs. Burt Langford, Aurora, Colo. Hodgman-Splain-Roberts Mortuary"

Amarillo October 20, 1971 " Final rites for Charles P. Nies, 89, a resident of Dumas for the past three years who died Tuesday in Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, are scheduled for Friday afternoon in a Lincoln [Neb.) funeral home. Born in Ellis, Neb., Mr. Nies was a retired rancher from Colorado. He was a member of Dumas United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, 0. C. Nies of Dumas; two daughters, Mrs. Leo Krivan of De Witt, Neb., and Mrs. Bert Langford, of Aurora, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Local arrangements were by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors of Amarillo."

January 1950 Beatrice "Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Nies and three children of Great Bend, Kas., have moved to Beatrice where they have bought a home at 400 W Court. "

Oswald Camille Nies, per one post, born Sept 15, 1904 in Ellis, Nebraska, died August 24, 1979 in Dumas, Texas, husband of Dolores Louise Nies.

"George Arthur Nies, 72. a messenger for the Railway Express Agency thirty - nine years, died yesterday at the home. 2529 Cissna Kansas City, Kansas. He had been ill about a year. Mr. Nies ... forty - four years ago from Beatrice, Neb. ..home; two daughters, Miss Viola Nies of the home and Mrs. Vivian Pearson. 1723 Waverly ... two sisters. Mrs. Elizabeth Sherling, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mrs. Emma Wiedeman, Minatare, Neb., and three brothers. Charles Nies. La Junta, Colo.; Harry Nies, Portland. Ore., and Bert Nies. Norfolk. Neb. Services will be held at 2 o'clock Monday at the Pulton chapel. Burial will be in Highland Park


Dorothy Nies married Leo J. Krivan, and in 1930 Beatrice, Nebraska, Leo is 29, Dorothy M. 23, Leo C. 4, Donald L. 3 and Betty D. newborn.
She's buried in Saline County, Nebraska 1906-1988 # 117483200, with Leonard J. Krivan 1900-1980.

Leo C. Krivan, 86, of Beatrice died at a Lincoln hospital Friday evening, March 16, 2012.
He was born April 7, 1925 at Penelope, TX. He married Anna Wattjes November 28, 1948 at Trinity Lutheran Church in DeWitt.
Survivors include sons, Gary Krivan and wife Gail of Largo, FL and Roger Krivan and wife Debbie of DeWitt; two daughters, Deb Johnson and husband Jim of DeWitt and Donna Evers and husband Duane of Beatrice; daughter-in-law, Margaret Krivan of League City, TX; nine grandchildren, Tracy Krivan and wife Nicole, Tyler Krivan and wife Amy, Trent Krivan and wife Shannon, Brock Johnson, Brandon Johnson, Brittany Johnson, Jon Rabus and wife Angela, Tiffany Bryl and Kerry Baker and husband Brian; 13 great-grandchildren, Nathan and Kody Krivan, Maddux Johnson, Noah and Ethan Rabus, Drake Bryl, Deitrick, Zander and Lexand Baker, Aiden Krivan, Addison Krivan, Allyson Krivan and Alexis Johnson; sister, Betty Wendelin of Lincoln; aunt, Ada Jane Langford of Denver, CO.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Leo J. and Dorothy Nies Krivan, his wife Anna Krivan who died October 11, 2008, on son Lester Krivan and two brothers.
Graveside services were held Thursday, March 22, 2012 at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery with the DeWitt Legion Post providing military graveside rites. A memorial service was also held at the Trinity Lutheran Church of DeWitt with Pastor Ken Kramer officiating.

Burton Joseph Langford 1909-2002 # 181355826 and Ada Jane Langford 1918-2016 # 181355839 are buried in Aurora, Colorado.

September 25, 1949 Beatrice, Nebraska "Word has been received here of the death of George Nies, son of the late Peter Nies of Ellis, who died Friday at Kansas City, Kas. He was a retired railroader. Funeral services will be in Kansas City. Surviving are his wife and twin daughters; brothers, Harry of Portland, Ore., Charlie of Carvel. Colo., and Bert of Norfolk; sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Sherling of Colorado Springs and Mrs. Emma Wiedeman of Minatare, Nebr.; nieces, Mrs. Virgil Macy and Mrs. Wilbur Yarger, and nephew, Everett Van Buskirk, all of Beatrice; and aunt, Mrs. Emma Baker of Beatrice. W. P. Hess of Beatrice is a brother-in-law. "
