John is buried in Jefferson County, Kansas # 90284655, with Margaret Louisa (Allison) Anderson 1839-1913 # 90284675.

" John Newton Anderson was born March 27, 1837, near Kenton, Hardin county, Ohio, where he lived until 16 years of age, when he moved with his parents to Iowa. He resided in Iowa until the age of 21. When he was 21 years old he united with the Presbyterian church and afterward united with the Congregational church at Old Fairview, Kans. From Iowa he came to Nebraska, where he met Miss Louis Allison, to whom he was married Dec. 25, 1861. To this union were born 13 children, 11 of whom survive. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson made their home near Hiawatha for 34 years, coming to their present home near Dunavant, nearly 18 years ago. Mr. Anderson's death was the result of an accident. He was driving to Ozawkie to celebrate the Fourth when his horse became frightened at an automobile and ran away, throwing him from the buggy and inflicting injuries from which he could not recover. He departed this life July 13, 1912, at the age of 75 years. Anderson, Union, Nebr.; Charles B. and Mack Allison, Kairview, Kan.; J. B. Blazer, Wichita, Kan.; Hoy Anderson, Nellie King, Hiawatha.--Oskaloosa Independent. "

In 1880 Seward County, Nebraska, James Anderson is farming, 39, born in Denmark, Gorian 34 in Norway. Charles is 10, Martin 7, Emeline 5, Mary 4, and Hattie 1.

In 1885 Seward County, James is 37, Gorine 43, Charles 15, Martin 13, EWmeline 11, Marann 9, Hattie 6, and Jane 4.

James C. Anderson, age 47, born in Denmark, son of Christian Anderson and Pauline Johnson bride: Eliza Salmon, age 44, born in Canada, daughter of William Stewart and Eliza Willis married: 02 May 1895 in York, York, Nebraska"

In 1900 York County, Nebraska, Charles M. Anderson is 29, with brother Martin 27, sister Emeline 25, Mary 24, Hattie May 1879, and Jennie Feb 1881. They're next to James C. Anderson 52 and born iN Denmark , married five years to Eliza March 1851 Canada.

September 1907 " Miss Mary Anderson, of York, Nebr., who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. Anderson, on Mr. Dowlin's ranch, returned home on Monday."

Mary Anderson Anderson 1876-1953 is buried in Wray # 16984093, with Ross J. Anderson 1872-1959.

February 1901 "R. J. Anderson of Clifton, Ariz., is here for a visit with relatives. Mr. Anderson is a brother of Mrs. E. J. Dowlin."

1906 "Ross Anderson of California and Robb Anderson of New Mexico, brothers-in-law of E.J. Dowlin of Laird, have leased the Dowiln (sic) ranch for a term of years, and will soon take possession."

February 1907 " Ross Anderson, who was shot through the hand by a gun falling from his brother's hands, comes out of the accident with the loss of the thumb on his left hand and one stiff foro finger. He says he is thankful it is no worse."

August 27, 1909 "While putting up hay on the Dowling ranch Saturday forenoon the derrick on the stack gave way and the pole in falling rebounded and struck Robert Anderson on the head causing a blood clot on the brain from which he died Sunday night. He was taken to Denver in hopes of saving his life, but in vain, he never regained consciousness.
He and his brother Ross have been running the Dowlin ranch for two or three years. Robert H. Anderson was married to Miss Anderson of York, Nebraska, about two years ago, who survives him together with a father and mother who arrived here from Kansas Wednesday in time for the funeral at 2 o clock that afternoon at Laird M.E. Church, Rev. Kerr of Haigler was in charge of the services. Internment at Grandview Cemetery. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of the entire community in this dark hour of sorrow."

"Bob Anderson, a brother-in-law of E. J. Dowlin and foreman of the Dowlin ranch a few miles east of Laird, met with a fatal accident while stacking hay last Saturday morning. Mr. Anderson was on the stack when the big hay derrick fell, striking him on top of the head with such force as to fracture the skull. He was rushed to Denver on the noon train the same day but died before the exact location of the fracture could be found and an operation performed. He passed away late Sunday night in the hospital at Denver. The deceased came to Wray but a few years ago and was highly respected by all who knew him. His relatives residing in Yuma county are a brother, Ross Anderson, who was associated with him on the ranch, and two sisters, Mrs. E. J. Dowlin and Mrs. Cannady, of Laird, who, besides the wife, are left to mourn his loss. He was married but a short time after coming to Colorado and the fact that his wife has had but comparatively a few years in which to enjoy his companionship makes the affair doubly sad."

July 1912 "Mrs. Hattie Anderson spent Sunday with her sister, Mrs. Mary Anderson. "

August 15, 1912 Laird items "Mrs. Hattie Anderson visited with Mrs. John Hultquist Sunday."

Hattie proved up two quarters in sections 20 and 29 6, 2N 42W in 1916.

May 1917 "Mrs. Hattie Anderson of Laird, who has been residing with her sister, Mrs. B. D. Prentice and family, has accepted a position with the George Conrad store at Idalia and went out Tuesday to take up the work."

May 31, 1917 Idalia items " Mrs. Hattie Anderson is working in George Conrad's store. She has taken Miss Flo Clark's place. Miss Flo Clark is going to try the homestead life a while "

October 18, 1917 "Mrs. Hattie Anderson, of Idalia, and Mr. and Mrs. Ross Anderson of south of Laird left Monday evening for York, Nebraska, where they were called by the sudden death of Mrs. Anderson, their mother."

November 1917 Laird items "Frank Holcombs and Mrs. Hattie Anderson came over from Idalia Sunday and visited the 'Bachelor Maids'."

In 1920 Hattie is back in York, Nebraska, 40, widowed, living with father James C. Anderson 72 - immigrating in 1867 from Denmark.

They're still together in 1930 York. This census said that Hattie was a wife....

Hattie is living alone in 1940 York, Nebraska, widowed.


1916 Laird items "Chas. Anderson is rambling around in a brand new Ford purchased from Jas. Conrad."

In 1900 Brown County, Kansas, David Cannady is a stone mason, born Sept 1854 in New York, married two years to Grace Dec 1873 Kansas. Gladis i was born Dec 1893, Mary Sept 1895.

December 17, 1909

In 1910 Yuma County, Grace M. is 34, married to B.D. Prentice 49. Gladys L. is 16, Mary W. 14.

December 11, 1913 "The home of Mr. and Mrs. B.D. Prentice of Laird was the scene of a pretty home wedding Wednesday evening when Miss Mary W. Cannady, the younger daughter of Mrs. Prentice, was united in marriage to Floyd E. Galbreath, the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles G. Gaibreath, of several miles southeast of Wray. At seven o'clock in the evening, the bridal party descended the stairs and entered the living room during the rendition of the wedding march by Miss Everna Holcomb. Miss Gladys Cannady, sister of the bride, and Earl Galbreath, brother of the groom, acted as maid to bride and as groomsman. Rev. E. C. Staley, pastor of the Methodist church of that place officiating as clergyman.
The bride was attired in a simple white gown and the groom dressed in a dark blue serge suit.
Immediately after the ceremony, the guests partook of an elaborate three course supper which was served by Mrs. Hattie Anderson and Mrs. Ray Arnold, the aunt and cousin of the bride.
Forty guests witnessed the marriage ceremony and were as follows: C. G. Gaibreath and family, the George Fanner and Freeman Bullard families, E. J. Dowlin and family, the Messrs and Mesdames T. N. Ainslie, R. J. Anderson, Ray Arnold, Earl Prentice and Jay Prentice, the Misses Mary Rose, Everna Holcomb and Lillie Jacobson, Messrs Dick Seward, Walter and Arthur Hulquist, Elmer Jacobson , R. C. Calhoun and Mrs. Hattie Anderson, all of near Laird.
The out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. Madison Finch of Wray.
Many useful and beautiful gifts were presented to the bride and groom by their relatives and host of friends. We. in company with them, extend our wishes for their future happiness and welfare.
Mr. and Mrs. Galbreath will reside on a farm eleven miles northeast of Wray."

May 6, 1915
"A pretty wedding took place at the B. D. Prentice home Sunday May 2nd at 4:30 p. m., when Gladys Cannady of Laird and Fred Egley of Holdrege, Nebraska, were united in marriage by Rev. Rice of Wray. The bridal couple entered the parlor to the strains of The Bridal Chorus, played by Mrs. Jay Prentice. About fifty guests were present consisting of relatives and close friends only, to whom after the ceremony and congratulations, an excellent luncheon was served.
The bride is the oldest daughter of Mrs. B. D. Prentice and an exceptionally estimable, lovely girl. She is a graduate of the Yuma county high school and has taught very successfully for the past two years. The groom is the younger son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Egley of Holdrege, a most excellent young man and is filing clerk with the express company at Holdrege, where he has a cozy home prepared for his bride. The out of town guests were Mrs. J. Egley of Holdrege and Mr. and Mrs. Madison Finch of Wray. Many beautiful and useful gifts were received. Mr. and Mrs. Egley expect to leave for Holdrege Wednesday. They will take with them the best wishes of their many friends here, for a happy and prosperous future."

Grace M. (Cannady) Prentice proved up forty acres in 5, 1N 42W (a mile northeast of Laird, in 1916.

May 1919 "Mrs. Fred Egley, of Holdrege, Nebraska, arrived Tuesday, and is a guest of her mother, Mrs. B.D. Prentice, some twenty-five miles northeast of Yuma.

In 1920 Yuma County, Magee Precinct (Pleasant Valley area), Bert D. is 60, born in Ohio, with Grace M. 45 Kansas. Harold is 22, born in Colorado.
B.D. Prentice was farming more than a thousand acres just north of the Pleasant Valley church.

Burton was killed in an auto accident in 1926, and is buried in Wray.
On December 10, 1913 Mary W. Cannady of Laird married Floyd E. Galbreath , at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. B.D. Prentice, stepfather and mother of the bride.

In 1920 Valley precinct, near brother James' claim, Floyd Galbreath is 26, Mary W. 24 born in Kansas, with Ruth 4, M. June 3, and Robert B. 1. They have a hired girl, Blossom Chambers, 19 Kansas, and a partner Charles E. Swartz, 22, Ohio.
In 1930 they're in Skagit Head, Washington, farming, with Ruth 15, June M. 13, Robert B. 12, and Beth G. 9, all kids born in Colorado.

On the same census page is Grace M. Prentice, 56, widowed, born in Kansas.

Wendell Edward Thorsen of Island County, and Beth Galbreath of Island County married there September 29, 1939 - wittnesses Bennie and June Schumacher.

In 1940 Clinton, Washington, Floyd is a merchant, 46, Mary 44, Robert 22, Beth 20. Their son-in-law Wendell Thorsen 21 Washington is with them, married. He must be the husband of Beth.

Grace Prentice is also in Island County in 1940, 66, widowed. She died April 28, 1945 in Everett, Washington, father Newton Anderson, mother Margaret Allison. Grace is buried in Bayview, # 82939495.

" EARL WESLEY PRENTICE Earl Wesley Prentice, 79, of 4345 Madison, died yesterday at St. Mary's hospital. He was born in Burr Oak, Kansas, while his family was traveling by covered wagon to Laird, Colorado. He lived here 38 years. Mr. Prentice retired four years ago from the Con Frazier Buick company, where he was a mechanic. He was a member of St. Mark's Methodist church. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Neva Baker, 4343 Madison; two brothers, Jay R. Prentice, Wray, Colo., and Harold O. Prentice, Cloverdale, Ind.; two sisters, Miss Margaret Prentice, Boulder, Colo., and Mrs. Zella Duckworth, Apple Valley, Calif.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 10 o’clock Saturday at the Epworth Methodist church; burial in Maple Hill cemetery. Friends may call after 7 o’cock Friday night at the Gates chapel. "

March 1922 "Harold Prentice and Miss Fern Dunagan were entertained at the E.B. Blackburn home Sunday."

Harold O. Prentice 1897-1971 is buried in Morgan County, Indiana, # 86951956, with Fern Elaine (Dunagan) Prentice 1895-1952.
April 17, 1971, Indianapolis "Harold O. Prentice, No. 3 Cloverdale. Beloved father of Ruth Paris Duncan of Gosport, Betty Shumaker of Plainfleld, Robert Prentice. Fort Pierce, Fla. Brother of Zella Duckworth and Margaret Prentice both of California. 12 Grandchildren, 2 Great-grandchildren. Funeral services Saturday. WHITAKER FUNERAL HOME, Cloverdale. "

In 1920 Yuma County, near the Pleasant Valley church, Charles Darbin 27 born in Pennsylvania and Nettie 26 have Harold E. 4.

April 30, 1925 Pleasant Valley items "Sunday, April 26, a number of relatives staged a surprise on Mr. and Mrs. Charles Darbin, in honor of its being Mrs. Darbin's birthday. Several were present from Wray and Laird."

In 1930 La Salle, Colorado, Charles is farming, 37, with Nettie L. 36, Harold E. 14, Barton D. 9, Charles 7, Adabelle 5, and John W. 3.
In 1940 Weld County, Charles is 46, Nettie 45, Harold 23, Ada Belle 15, John 13, adn Floyd 4.

Nettie Laveta (Prentice) Darbin 1894-1949 is buried in Wray # 63510522, dying in Weldona, Colorado.
On the same stone is Charles Darbin 1894-1950 # 63510546.

Harold Darbin married Josephine Rogers, daughter of Marion and Edna Rogers.

In August 1961 Miss Shirley Darbin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Darbin - granddaughter of Marion and Edna Rogers, married Hrold David Headley.

In December 1961, Gloriad Edna Darbin, also Hrold's daughter, married Charles Jay Beaman of Denver.
