Thomas Foster Whittenburg, born in 1844, joined his two sons, Clifford and
Roscoe, in Eckley after the death of his wife in Illinois. Thomas was a veteran
of the Civil war (1861-1865). Death came to him in 1915. He is buried in the
Eckley cemetery. His son Thomas was united in marriage with Mabel Downs March
31, 1909, in Industry, Kansas. They subsequently moved to Edger, Nebraska, then
to Eckley in 1916 with their three sons: Dale, Forrest and Wallace. In 1918 they
purchased a home eight miles north of Eckley. They were blessed with four
children born in the Eckley area: Floyd, LaVone, Delta and Norma. In 1929 the
family moved to the town of Eckley. While living there they owned and operated a
dairy and purchased a grocery and toggery store located in the old Boggs Hall.
Both Thomas and Mabel were active in the Eckley Presbyterian Church and
celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Chruch in 1959. Their seven
children all graduated from Eckley High School. Mabel died in 1964 at the age of
77 and death came to Thomas in 1973 at the age of 90. Both are buried in the
Eckley Cemetery. The four sons of Thomas and Mabel volunteered for service in
WWII. They were sworn into the Navy on a national radio broadcast in 1942 and
each served overseas and were discharged in 1945. Dale, the eldest son, married
Pat Sprole in 1941 and settled in Denver, after his return from the Navy. Two
children were born to this union. Pat died in 1973 at age 57. Dale has one
grandson and twin granddaughters. Forrest married Denva Hutchinson in 1955. They
now preside in Prescott, Arizona. Wallace married Olive New (an Eckley girl) in
1950. They have two boys and five grandchildren. All reside in or near Denver.
Floyd married Helen Rae in Phoenix, Arizona. The lived in New York City after
the war and moved to Denver in 1952. LaVone married Elmer Mullikin in 1941,
while he was in the service. They live in St. Petersburg, Florida. They have a
son and three grandchildren. Delta married Ken Settle in 1947, while he was in
the service. A son, Jerry, preceded his mother in death at the age of 13. Delta
died in 1980 at the age of 56. Norma and Grover Eastin (also from Eckley) were
married in 1945. Norma waited for her soldier to return from overseas duty. They
established their home in Eckley, later moving to Denver where their two sons
were born. The six surviving children, 10 grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren of Thomas and Mabel Whittenburg are enjoying many good times
together.

Thomas proved up 240 acres in 2, 1S 46W in 1918. Clifford proved up two quarters in 1 and 2, in 1914, and another forty acres in 2 in 1918.
Roscoe Whittenburg made final proof in 1914 on two quarters in 28 and 33, 1S 47W, witnesses Frank W. Brounte, Josie E. Prather, Clifford Whittenburg, and Thomas F. Whittenburg.
ROSCOE
Roscoe and first wife, Stella (Sutter), left Clay Center, Kansas and arrived
in Colorado in 1910. Stella passed away in 1941, and he later married Ida.
He signed a WWI draft registration card June 5, 1917 in Yuma County giving his
date of birth as October 20, 1889. He was born at Franklin, Illinois. Roscoe was
farming and had a wife and two children by 1917.
Roscoe was the son of Thomas Foster Whittenberg and Elizabeth L. Tate. Elizabeth
died October 6, 1904 in Illinois. After her death, Thomas came to Eckley,
Colorado where his sons Clifford and Roscoe were living.

Thomas Whittenburg of Eckley died Nov. 24 1973 in Castle Rock at the age of
90 years. Funeral services were held at the Eckley Community Presbyterian church
Nov. 28 with Rev. Richard A. Christensen officiating. Interment was in the
Eckley Cemetery.
He was born Feb. 2, 1883 in Beaucoup, Illinois to Thomas and Elizabeth Tate
Whittenburg. He was educated in the public schools in Illinois and a business
college in Abilene, Kansas. He also attended barber school and took a penmanship
course. He was married to Mabel Downs in March 1909 in Industry, Kansas. They
moved in 1914 from Kansas there their three eldest sons had been born. Another
son and three daughters were born here. He operated a grocery store and dairy in
the town of Eckley and worked a farm north of town until his retirement in 1962.
The Whittenburgs were active in church work and were members of the Eckley
Community Presbyterian Church. His wife, Mabel, passed away in August 1964. He
was also preceded in death by a grandson, Jerome Settle. Survivors include four
sons, Dale, Wallace and Floyd; three daughters, Lavonne, Delta and Norma;
brother, Roscoe; sister, Dora Bege of Junction City, Kansas; ten grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Thomas Whittenburg of Eckley were conducted by Rev. William Jones on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 2, 1964, at the Eckley Community church. Burial was in the Eckley Cemetery. Mrs. Whittenburg, who had lived in the Eckley community since 1915, died on August 31, 1964 at the Wray Community Hospital where she had been admitted two weeks previous to her death. Mabel Downs was born to Margaret Emeline (Ashlock) and William Downs on May 27, 1887, near the town of Industry, Kansas, where she grew to womanhood and attended school. She was baptised in the Evangelical church on Jan. 1, 1909, and later that same year was married to Thomas Whittenburg on March 31. They made their home in Kansas where they became parents of three children, Dale, Forrest and Wallace. In 1915, the family moved to the Eckley community where four other children, Floyd, Anita, Delta and Norma were born. Mrs. Whittenburg is survived by her husband and seven children, Anita Mullikin of St. Petersburg, Florida; Delta Settle, Norma Eastin and the four sons all living in Denver; 11 grandchildren and many friends and neighbors who knew her as counselor, helper, friend, elder and servant in the church and to whom she was an inspiration by her daily living. Clifford registered in Yuma , born March 24, 1876, farming, nearest relative Elizabeth Whittenburg.
In 1920, on Wesley Avenue in Yuma, Clifford is 44, with Mary E. 42, born in Indian. They have Ruth A. 17 and Merle 16, both born in Nebraska.
In 1930 Rock Creek precinct, Washington County, Colorado, Clifford 54 and Elizabeth 52 have Ruth, 27, a school teacher.
Merle is in Jefferson County in 1930, married to Alice, 25. They're still there in 1940, wtih Rodney, 4.
On the same census page are Clifford W. 65 and Elizabeth 63.
Clifford Whittenburg was probated in Jefferson County, Colorado in September 1961.

Halsey O. Whittenburg, per #124352811, is buried in Topeka, Kansas, dying July 2, 1968.
| Joan Arlene Whittenburg, 88, a resident of Alma Manor, Topeka,
Kansas, went home to be with her Lord and her loved ones, Tuesday, April
19, 2011. She was born March 21, 1923 in McFarland, KS the daughter of Halsey and Eva Frances (Cox) Whittenburg. She graduated from Alma High School in May of 1941 before moving to Los Angeles, CA where she was united in marriage to Robert F. Stuewe in June of 1941. They were instrumental in founding Mill Creek Baptist Church at McFarland, KS in 1954. They later divorced in 1966. Joan worked as a Medical-Aid nurse from 1964 until her retirement in 2000. After retirement she loved working at KNI in Topeka, KS until her first stroke in 2002. While Joan lived in Austin, TX, she was on the "Paris Café" softball team which was the runner-up in the 1947 state championship. In 1948 the team won the Texas state championship, with Joan being named the Texas All-State 3rd baseman. She was offered a position as a singer with one of the famous Big Bands of the late 1940's but turned it down to raise her family. She enjoyed the outdoors, was a very good water skier and a terrific cook. She dearly loved music, singing at weddings, funerals, church, and singing "Happy Birthday" to other Alma Manor residents. Survivors include her son, Ronald Stuewe and his wife Patricia, of Alma, KS; her daughter, Bobbie Jo Alberty and her husband Bill, of Inola, OK; a son-in-law, Steve Deiter, of Sabetha, KS; a sister, June Redburn, Spring Hill, TN; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Robin Deiter, and a grandson, Brant Lee "Teensy" Alberty. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 23 at Mill Creek Baptist Church of McFarland. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery of Topeka. She will lie in-state beginning at 1:00 p.m. Friday at Stewart Funeral Home of Alma, where family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m – 7:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Grace Hospice or Mill Creek Baptist Church and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home of Alma, PO Box 126, 66401. |
