March 1900 Morrison, Colorado "Joe and Mitchell Cruse were vaccinating their young cattle this week. Mrs. B. A. Cruse was visiting son, Nick, who is attending school at Pine. "

June 1900 "M. M. Cruse was down from Pine this week. He had a horse drowned and came down for another."

October 1900 "Mitchel Cruse returned from the mountains. Mr. and Mrs. Cruse expect to make this their future home. His brother Nick Cruse is here visiting old friends."


January 1901 "Mitchell Cruse sends the Times and the St. Louis Republic to his father at Pine, Colo., for a year beginning this week. A good son and his days shall be long in the land."

September 1901 "A letter from W. F. Cruse of Pine, Colo., says the crops there are better than usual, the potato crop being extra good. Cattle very cheap and feed a good price. "

October 1928 "Joe Cruse of Morrison and Jesse Cruse from Kennsburg spent Thursday with Joe's brother M. M. Cruse."

April 1930 "J. R. Cruse of Brighton and Mrs. A. E. Dake of Denver visited from Monday till Wednesday at the home of their brother, M. M. Cruse and family."

March 1906 "Mr. and Mrs. W. Cruse and Mrs. Raine, of Shaffers Crossing spent one day last week in Pine.."

Mitchell proved up a quarter in 8, 1N 45W in 1907, and cash-claimed 80 acres in section 5 in 1917.

January 1910 "Wesley Cruse and wife returned to the mountains south west of Denver at Pine, Colorado, where they have been living some years. They visited their son, Mitchel Cruse and his family, and were the guests of J. P. Speirs and wife over Saturday and Sunday. They left Sunday afternoon on No. 1."

"Mrs. Bert Dake and daughter, Ruth, who had been visiting her brother, Mitchel Cruse, and family of west of town, and friends in Wray and vicinity, left for their home at Pine, Colorado, last Sunady. They were accompanied home by Little Miss Mildred, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cruse."

May 1924 "Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Cruse, living a few miles west of Wray, were very pleasantly surprised last Sunday, when more than 100 of their neighbors and friends went to the Cruse home to spend the day. The occasion was the 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Cruse. All of the ladies took well filled baskets of good things to eat and at high noon a picnic dinner was served to the multitude under the shade trees in the yard. The day was a very happy one, not only for Mr. and Mrs. Cruse, but for all of the guests. The Rattler extends to Mr. and Mrs. Cruse heartiest congratulations upon arriving at the 25th milestone of their married life. May many more years of happiness and prosperity be theirs to enjoy."

July 1926 " Mrs. Louis Moon and baby daughter of Chicago, are visiting at the home Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Cruse of west ot town. It will be remembered that Mrs. Moon was formerly Miss Myrtle Cruse, and a daughter of the a lorementioned."

November 1929 " Clarence Cruse of Sterling, and John Cruse of Ft. Collins came to Wray Sunday to visit their brother, Eugene, who is quite sick at the hospital."

September 1931 "F. K. Hall reports the sale of 320 acres of land from M. Cruse to Henry Cordes the past week."

July 1936 "Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Cruse visited at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Elmer Jacobson and family last Wednesday."

April 1937 " Mr. and Mrs. John Nicola came Sunday to spend a few days with Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Cruse. Mrs. Nicpla is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cruse."

May 1949 "The seven living children of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Cruse, popular pioneer couple of the Wray community, are heading this week for Fontana, Calif., where Mr. and Mrs. Cruse now reside, and there on next Tuesday, May 24, they will help their parents celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage.
The children are Clarence Cruse of Sterling, Mildred Jacobson of Wray, Myrtle Moon of Ventura, California, Marie Johnston of Santa Barbara California, Ruth Nicola of Worland, Wyoming, John Wesley Cruse of Worland, and Gene Cruse of Wray. One daughter, Helen Campbell, died in M«y of 1947. Leaving this week from Colorado are Clarence Cruse of Sterling, Mrs. A. E. Jacobson, who will be accompanied by Mrs. Gus Yenter, and the Gene Cruse family. Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Speirs (he is a brother of Mrs. Cruse) left last week for California and will attend the celebration. Mary Sisson, who is a twin and the only sister of Mrs. Cruse, is also planning to attend. Mrs. M. M. Cruse is the former Sarah Speirs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Speirs, Wray pioneers. The couple was married at a home ceremony at the J. P. Speirs farm home (their homestead) 12 miles west and two south of Wray. After they had been married ten years, they bought the Speirs place and lived there for 35 years. About eight yers ago they moved to Fontana where they have since resided. The celebration of the Golden Wedding will be held on Sunday, May 22, with a family reunion, the first gathering of all the family since 1923."

"M. M. Cruse, who lived at Wray for many years, leaving here several years ago to make his home in California, died at 11:45 o'clock Tuesday night in Lakewood, Calif., according to word received by relatives here. He had been ill but a abort time. A daughter, Mrs. E. A. Jacobson of Wray, left for California Friday night when she receivesd! word of hia serious illness and will remain there through this week. He was nearly 90 years old.
The funeral service has been tentatively set for Saturday of this week.
Mr. Cruse is survived by his wife, Sarah, and the following children: Clarence Cruse and Mildred Jacobson of Wray, Marie Houenstein and Gene Cruse, who reside in California, and John Cruse of Mitchell, Nebraska. He was a brother-in-law of H. A. Speirs of Wray.
Two daughters, Ruth and Helen, preceded their father in death."

"The Rev. Willis Wisehart officiated at a graveside service at Grandview cemetery Tuesday morning at 10:30 o'clock for Mitchel M. Cruse, who died Sept. 12 at Lakewood, Calif., at the age of 89 years and 11 months. A crematory service had been held previously in California.
Mr. Cruse had been a resident of this community for nearly fifty years, before he moved to California. He was born in Clark County, Mo. on October 13, 1871, and moved to Colorado with his parents in 1886. He came to Yuma county in 1888, and in 1899 was married to Sarah Speirs.
Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Cruse, two of whom, Helen Campbell and Ruth Necola, preceded their father in death.
In his early years he did mining and logging in the Colorado Rockies and herded range cattle in Yuma county. He proved up on a homestead west of Wray, and lived in this community until 1941, when they moved to a chicken farm at Fontana, California. About five years ago they retired and moved to Lakewood, Calif., to make their home. "

August 1933 "Readers of The Rattler will be interested in the belated wedding announcement of Miss Fern Ernestine Lasher to Mr. Johnnie M. Cruse.
These young people stole a march on their friends by being married at Sidney, Neb., on June ? by the Christian minister of Sidney officiating clergyman. Accompanying these young people on the trip to Sidney were Mrs. Lasher, Mrs. Ralph Johnston, mother and sister of the groom. She wore a tailored suit of light ... with all white accessories. The groom wore the conventional black.
The bride is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Lasher of north of Wray. She graduated from Yuma County high school with the class of 1932. She is an accomplished young woman whose host of friends will wish her happiness. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Cruse of west of Wray. He graduated from the county high school in 1930 , later attending the state agricultural college at Fort Collins for several years. He is an energetic and ambitious young man. A legion of friends of these popular young people join the Rattler in extending to them heartiest congratulations and best wishes."

January 1947 "Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Lasher and Mr. and Mrs. John Cruse drove to Denver Thursday to spend the day with Mrs. Lasher's brother Carl Zimmerman and family. "

May 25, 1950 "Charon Carole Cruse, only daughter of Ferne and John Cruse, was born at Wray, Colo., January 3, 1938, and died in Denver at the tender age of 12 years, 4 months and 13 days. At the very early age of eight, she accepted Christ as her Savior and became a member of the Worland, Wyo., Methodist church. Her membership was transferred to the Park Hill Methodist church on Palm Sunday, 1950. She lived a devout Christian, so conscientious for one so young. She won several awards for perfect attendance at Sunday school. Symbolic of her life, she loved music and was to have participated in her piano class recital the Saturday following her death. She was active in her school, Girl Scout and 4-H club work.
Most of her life was spent in Worland, Wyo. She moved to Denver with her parents in July of last year. A brother, Robert Eugene, preceded her death in infancy.
Left to mourn her death are her parents; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Cruse of Fontana, Calif., and Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Lasher of Wray, and many other less near relatives."

September 1953 "Mrs. G. E. Lasher accompanied her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. John Cruse, to Denver when they returned home Sunday after their Wray visit."

March 1961 "Mrs. Ernest Lasher went to Denver this Thursday morning to spend a week with her daughter, Mrs. John Cruse. "

June 1963 " Guests of Mrs. Ethel Lasher this past week were Mrs. Lester Heit, her sister-in-law, Mrs. Lester Hoitman, son Dean and two granddaughters of Brighton, here on Thursday, and Mrs. Lasher's dnughter, Mrs. John Cruse, of Gering, Neb., who spent Thursday and Friday with her mother."

CLARENCE

December 30, 1943 "Mrs. Margaret Starr of Wray and Clarence Cruse of Sterling were married at an impressive ceremony at 2:30 o’clock the afternoon of Christmas Day at the Assembly of God church in Wray. Preceding the marital rites, Rev. Eugene Kauffman of Sterling delivered a message. Then Miss Beverly Parsons sang, "I Love You Truly," and Mrs. Pearl Speicher played the wedding march. The principals were attended by the bride's sister, Mrs. Bernard Jordan of Denver, and by Harold Farrell of Sterling. Rev. D. E. Palmer officiated at the double ring ceremony. The altar was decorated with baskets of roses and carnations. The bride wore a wedding dress of blue velvet and her sister and bridesmaid wore red crepe. Before the service, Mr. and Mrs. Morris Kimber, parents of the bride, entertained at dinner with covers laid for the nuptial pair, their attendants, Rev. and Mrs. Kauffman and daughter, Mrs. Milton and daughter of Sterling, Miss Effie Armstrong, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Brethower, Charlotte and Carol Ruth, Rev. and Mrs. Palmer, Kenneth Kimber, Ed Starr and Dickie Crouse.
Mr. and Mrs. Cruse have gone to Denver to spend a few days and then will go to Sterling to establish their home in a residence they have recently purchased. Both Mr. and Mrs. Cruse are well known here. The bride attended local schools and in recent years has successfully operated Lola's Beauty Shop in Wray. Mr. Cruse is a son of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Cruse, former Wray residents now reside in California. He attended high school here and is now making his business headquarters at Sterling."

July 1926 "Mrs. Louis Moon and baby daughter of Chicago, are visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Cruse of west of town. It will be remembered that Mrs. Moon was formerly Miss Myrtle Cruse, and a daughter of the aforementioned."

May 1928 "Mrs. Myrtle Moon of Denver visited with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Cruse over the week end. "

July 1936 "Mrs. Myrtle Moon and daughter Shirley and Mrs. Helen Cassill of Ventura, Calif, arrived on Thursday of last week for a visit at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Cruse."

January 6, 1999 Lebanon, Oregon "Myrtle Antchagno, 95, of Lebanon, died Sunday, Dec. 27 at Villa Cascade Care Center in Lebanon. No services were planned.
She was interred at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura, Calif. Huston-Jost Funeral Home of Lebanon handled the arrangements.
She was born Feb. 28, 1903 in Wray, Colo., the daughter of Mitchell and Sarah (Spiers) Cruse. She lived in Colorado until 1937, when she moved to Ventura, Calif. She married James Antchagno in Las Vegas in 1952. He preceded her in death in 1986. She moved to Lebanon in 1989 to live with her daughter. Bowling was Antchagno's one true passion. She also enjoyed fishing and camping. She and her husband camped in the High Sierras between April and October for forty years. She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Lundy of Lebanon; a brother, Gene Cruse of Escondido, Calif.; two grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild."

December 1930 "The last report from Mrs. Helen Cruse Cassill she had been moved from the hospital to a hotel and was improving. "

July 1932 "On Sunday of this week the family of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Cruse met for a reunion at their home. It has been six years since the family have all been together.
Those present were Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Cruse, Johnny and Jean, Mr. and Mrs. John Speirs, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Speirs and Rosamond, Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Jacobson, Mrs. Poffinbarger, Mrs. Minnie Johnston, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Johnston, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cassill and Pollyanna, Mrs. Myrtle Moon and Shirley."

December 1932 "Mrs. Jack Cassill of Joes visited several days last week at the home of her parents, Mr. and. Mrs. Mitchell Cruse."

1939

August 1940 "Mr. and Mrs. Mitchel Cruse, Mrs. Martha Speirs and Mrs. Helen Cassell visited at Gus Yenter’s last Friday in the afternoon. They called on Mrs. John Clark and Mrs Will Sisson. "

May 1, 1947 "Mrs. Helen Campbell, 40, of Santa Barbara, Calif., the former Helen Cruse, died Monday after being ill since Christmas. Her death occurred in a San Francisco Hospital, where she had been rushed for treatment. Mrs. Campbell is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Cruse of Fontana, Calif., and is a sister of Mrs. Mildred Jacobson and Gene Cruse of Wray and a niece of Harvey Speirs. She had been gone from Wray for about 14 years, and before her marriage taught for some time in the Joes schools. She attended school at Wray.
Funeral services will be held Friday in Santa Barbara. Her relatives here did not receive word of her death in time to make the trip to California."

"Funeral services were conducted Friday, May 2nd at Santa Barbara, Calif., for Mrs. Gene Campbell, the former Helen Cruse, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Cruse of Fontana, Calif. Helen grew to young womanhood in this community and was well known here. She graduated from the Wray high school. The deceased left this community some fourteen years ago.
She had been ill since January but had been improving gradually. Death came as the result of a clot, at the University Hospital at San Francisco. Mrs. Campbell had been living at Berkeley for the past several months, as her husband is a student at the university there.
Helen is survived by her husband, Gene Campbell, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Cruse of Fontana, Calif.; her sisters, Mrs. Mildred Jacobson of Wray, Mrs. Marie Johnston of Santa Barbara, Calif., Mrs. Myrtle Moone of Ventura ,Calif., and Mrs. Ruth Nicola of Worland, Wyo.; and her brothers Gene of Wray and John Wesley of Worland, Wyo.; also Mr. H. A. Speirs of this city, an uncle, and many other less near relatives.
The final rites were conducted at 2 p. m. Friday at Santa Barbara, and interment was in that city."

May 1951 " Sheriff and Mrs. Jack Nicola of Worland, Wyo., came to Wray on Friday. Mr. Nicola returned home Sunday and Mrs. Nicola remained to visit relatives and friends. She is the former Ruth Cruse, sister of Mrs. Elmer Jacobson, Gene and Clarence Cruse of Wray."

January 19, 1961 "Word was received in Wray the first of the week of the death of Mrs. John Nicola of Saratoga, Wyo., the former Ruth Cruse, sister of Mrs. Elmer Jacobson and Clarence Cruse of Wray, and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Cruse of Long Beach, Calif., residents of Yuma county when their family was growing up.
Mrs. Nicola had gone to California for the holidays and was hospitalized at Lakewood when she suffered a heart attack. She was removed to a Los Angeles hospital, where she died on Monday morning. She was 51 years old on the first day of August. Mr. Nicola left for Long Beach, where services will be held on Saturday. Mrs. Nicola is also survived by her parents: three sisters, Myrtle Antchagno and Marie Hauensteln of Ventura, Calif., and Mildred Jacobson of Wray: and three brothers, Gene Cruse of Long Beach, John Cruse of Denver, and Clarence Cruse of Wray. One sister, Helen, died in 1946."
