"J.A. "Al" Raine, well known farmer of the Alfalfa community where he had lived the
past 40 years, died at Rochester, Minn., Sept. 5, where he had gone last week on
account of his health. Altho he had been in failing health for a long time he had
not given up active work on his farm.
Services were held in the Carnegie Methodist church at 10 a.m. Monday by the
pastor, Rev. Leroy Simmons. Bearers were J.H. Maxson, W.W. Rutherford, Chas.
Ditwiler, Ira Ray, C.L. Hancock and A.M. Kelly. The Pitchers were in charge of
arrangements. Burial was made in the Liberty church cemetery at Jefferson, former
home of the family.
James Alfred Raine was born in Clark County, Mo., in 1875 and was 71 years old at
the time of his death. He spent his boyhood days in Clark county where he
attended public schools. Later he lived in Greeley, Colo.
He was married to Miss Lillie McDowell in 1903 and to them three children were
born, two having died in infancy.
Mr. and Mrs. Raine lived at Jefferson two years and Lamont three years where he
was engaged in wheat farming. In 1908 the family located east of Alfalfa where
they have since lived. Mr. Raine joined the Methodist church in 1907.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Lillie Raine; his only daughter, Mrs. James
Eddie Park; two grandchildren, Ila Dee and James Richard Park of Clapham, New
Mexico; a brother, Thos. Raine, and nephew, Everett Raine of Gorin, Mo., and a
sister, Mrs. Sara Lee Davis, of Rutledge, Mo., all of whom with Mr. Park were here
for the funeral service.
Two sisters, Mrs. Emma Kildue, Wyconda, Mo., and Mrs. Amanda Hottle, Los Angeles,
and a number of nephews and nieces and other near relatives including Mrs. J.H.
Maxson of Carnegie, also survive."
February 1962 Carnegee, Oklahoma " Word has been received of the death of
Mrs. J. A. Raine, Clayton, N. M., a former resident of the Alfalfa community for many years.
Funeral services were at 3 pm February 9 in Clayton. Interment was
at the Liberty cemeterv at Jefferson, Oklahoma, the following day.
Lillie McDole was born in Clark county, Mo., on March 25, 1875.
She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jim Park, near Clayton, Wednesday, February 8.
In 1902 at LaBelle, Mo, she was married to James Alfred Raine, also from Clark county.
Soon after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Raine moved to Grant county, Okla.,
where they lived for about five years. They then bought and moved to a farm one mile east of Alfalfa.
Three children were born to them, two dying in infancy. They made their home in the Alfalfa
community until the death of Mr. Raine in September, 1946. Mrs. Raine sold the farm on
which Neil Horn now resides and moved to New Mexico to make her home with her daughter.
She had been a member of the Methodist church for many years and continued to keep her membership in the Alfada church. She is survived by the daughter, Mrs Park: two grandchildren, Mrs. Jake Mitchell of Amarillo, and James Richard Park, Clayton; and two greatgrandchildren, James Dee and Jonnie Pat Mitchell."

Wesley Cruse proved up 160 acres in section 6, 1N 44W and 1, 1N 45W in 1895.
September 11, 1919 "Wesley Cruse, aged 76 years, 3 months,
one of the best known men of the southern part of the county,
died yesterday morning at his home in Morrison,
dropsy and other complications being the cause.
Mr. Cruse was a native of Indiana, but came to Colorado from Missouri
34 years ago, first locating at Yuma.
Ten years later he moved to Jefferson county, and had made his home in
this county since that time. He was engaged in farming near Pine for many
years, but two years ago he retired from active business and he and his
wife moved to Morrison. Deceased is survived by his wife and three sons
and three daughters, County Commissioner Joseph Cruse,
Mrs. M. D. Newland, N. N. Cruse, Mrs. Charles Long, Mrs. A. H. Dake,
and N. W. Cruse. In addition he leaves scores of true friends, who knew him as a splendid
gentleman, honest and fair in all business dealings, and a citizen who was a credit to his
community. Funeral services will be held at Conifer tomorrow afternoon,
the arrangements being in charge of Woods & Sanders."

June 16, 1921 "Mrs. Betty A. Cruse, a prominent Jefferson county resident,
passed away last Thursday, June 9, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. H. Dake. of Pine.
Mrs. Cruse was visiting in Pine when suddenly taken ill, and her unexpected death was due
to double pneumonia, which developed. Mrs. Cruse was the widow of the late Wesley Cruse,
who died about two years ago, and had made her home in Morrison for many years.
She was born in Louisiana, June 1m 1846, and was 75 years old at the time of her death.
She was the mother of Joseph Cruse, formerly county commissioner.
Funeral services were held Friday, at the Conifer school house,
followed with burial in the Conifer cemetery. The arrangements were by Woods and Sanders. "

"Lucy is the daughter of James KEMP and Frances Mary GOODSELL. She married Joseph R. CRUSE 23 Apr 1890 in Conifer. They were married the same day as her sister Sadie (Sarah) KEMP and Lincoln DARK. The ceremony was performed at home by her father Reverend Kemp. On her 85th birthday, she was quoted in the Rocky Mountain Newspaper that it was her happy memories that made her lonely. "I remember the big dinners at home when I was a child up in Conifer--that's 77 years ago. And my own home, my own children. Lots of noise. Lots of laughs and fun. They've all been good years--even where there's been tragedy--and it's too easy to recall them" especially in the evening when all was quiet."

'ere it was eight hours old. The little infant was buried in the
cemetery near the Conifer school house, Wednesday, July 12th. The bereaved
parents have the sympathy of all, as their home is one where everyone is welcome."

April 25, 1940 Steamboar Springs "Mrs. A. F. Cruse and children returned Wednesday night from Denver,
where they had been to attend the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Cruse,
who live at Edgewatcr. Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Cruse and daughter,
and Charles Cruse of the Hotel Harbor, also went to Denver on the occasion.
A. F. Cruse, who is at Fitzsimmons hospital, was able to be present.
He expects to return home by May 1.
Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Cruse held an open house and were greeted by approximately
250 persons during the day. Their three sons, A. F. Cruse, Jesse Cruse, and Bryan Cruse,
and their families were there. There are eight grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren. Charles, who is day clerk at the Hotel Harbor, is Jesse's son,
and his sister is Lucy.
J. R. Cruse was born in Missouri, and his wife was born in Nebraska, and
both came to Colorado before their marriage, which occurred in Denver."

February 1916 "Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Cruse of Pine celebrated
their Golden Wedding, Tuesday, January 25, 1916,
a large number of friends and relatives being present.
Mrs. A. H. Dake, a daughter, served dinner and supper at her home.
Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Long gave a twelve pound wedding cake to grace the center
of the dining table, which was prettily decorated with roses by
Mrs. Geo. Hill, a niece, of Wray, Colo. A shower of gold wae given
Mr. and and Mre. Cruse by their children and grandchildren.
As a climax to this glorious day, a ball was given in the auditorium,
at which coffee, cakes and punch were served.
W. F. Cruse was born in Harrison county, Ind., in 1843. In 1849 he moved to
Missouri, where he resided until 1885, when he came to Wray, Yuma county,
Colorado. Later he moved to Jefferson county, and haa lived in and near Pine
since. Mr. Cruse was united in marriage to Miss Betty Raine, of Louisville, Ky.
, January 25, 1866, who haa been a faithful helpmeet and loving companion
to him for half a century.
Mr. and Mrs. Cruse have six children, seventeen grandchildren and
two great grandchildren.
Following are the children, all of whom were present excepting J. R. Cruse,
the oldest son: J. R. Cruse, Denver, Col.; M. M. Cruse, Wray, Colo.;
N. W. Cruse, Mrs. A. H. Dake, Mrs. M. D. Newland and Mrs. C. F. Long,
Pine, Colo. There were twenty-one guests at the anniversary dinner and
about ninety-five at the ball ia the evening."
"Mrs. Bert Dake and daughter, Ruth, who had been visiting her brother,
Mitchel Cruse, and family of west of town, and friends in Wray and
vicinity, left for their home at Pine, Colorado, last Sunady.
They were accompanied home by Little Miss Mildred, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Cruse."

of Bailey's. We congratulate the proud parents, and also the proud grand parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Dale Newland, of our town, and the great grand parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Cruse, of Pine. This baby has the honor of being the first
great grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Cruse, and the first grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Newland."

July 1924 "Milton Dale Newland was born at Adrington, Iowa, March 20, 1879.
At the age of 17 he went to San Francisco, where he lived for two years,
then he came to Jefferson county and lived at Pine until 1920.
When he located at Morrison and entered the garage business with H. K. Smith,
which interest he held at the time of his death, Sunday, July 13,
at 6:30 p. m.z
Mr. and l Mrs. Newland were married Sept. 20, 1908.
Mr. Newland was a member of the W. O. W. lodge No. 403,
and of the Odd Fellows. Death was caused by tuberculosis, which was
contracted about six months ago. Services were held at the Morrison church
Tuesday at 10 a m., Rev. D. A. Kemp officiating with a comforting address.
The Misses Jett and Rev. Mr. Kemp, with Mrs. Luce at the organ,
rendered several beautiful songs. Interment was at the Conifer cemetery.
Woods and Sanders were in charge of the services."

August 1900 Wray "Miss Pearl Cruse, who has been assisting at the hotel for so long
a time, has gone to Urmston to live with her parents, who are thinking
of visiting their old home iu Missouri this fall. This will give Pearl an
opportunity to practice the art of housekeeping."

November 1939 " Albert H. Dake, chairman of the board of directors
of the Routt County National bank, died Tuesday morning at the Boulder hospital.
The immediate cause of his death was pneumonia. Mr. Dake was 77 years old.
Funeral services were held from the Woods mortuary at Golden at 12:30 Wednesday
afternoon and interment was made in Conifer cemetery near Pine."
Mr. Dake was united in marriage to Pearl Cruse at Pine
on November 20, 1900, to which union one child, Mrs. Ruth Hoffmeister,

November 1901 "Mrs. Cookingham and little daughter of Denver, were up last
week to see the new baby at the Dake home. "
October 1903 "The body of Frank Cookingham, a Union Pacific engineer who died Monday
at Colgate, I. T., will arrive in Denver this morning.
The date of the funeral has not been set.
Mr. Cookingham was an old resident here, well known in railroad circles
and a respected member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen,
under whose auspices it is probable that he will be buried."
October 1903 "The husband of Mrs. Bert Dake and Joe Cruse's sister died suddenly
in Oklahoma last week. Mr. Cunningham was railroading from Oklahoma into Texas,
and was expecting to give up his position in a short time and go to Denver to live.
Mrs. Cunningham was away visiting relatives in Missouri when the news reached her that
her husband was dead. Mrs. Charles Long is another sister of Mrs. Cunningham. Mr.
and Mrs. Bert Dake, Joe Cruse, and mother attended the funeral in Denver.
This wus a very sad and sudden death, and all extend their sincere sympathy to all the
friends and relatives of Mrs. Cunningham."
" Frank Cookingham, one of the best known local locomotive engineers,
will be laid at rest this afternoon in Fairmount cemetery. The funeral services,
which will be in charge of the Rocky Mountain lodge. No. 77,
of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen, will take place at the Simpson M E. church.
The deceased was 39 years of age and is survived by a wife and 8-year-old child.
He came to Denver in 1892 and until six or eight months ago was connected with the
Union Pacific in the capacity of fireman and engineer.
For the few years he ran on the Julesburg division of the line. Cookingham's child,
being in ill health, caused him to give up his position and take a trip South with his
family. He settled in Denison, Texas, and associated himself with the Missouri,
Kansas and Texas, running between Denison and Muskogee. I. T. He seemed to be in good
health until several weeks ago when he suddenly broke down.
Physicians pronounced his ailment malarial congestion. He gradually declined and
Sunday night he breathed his last at Coal Gate, I. T. The body was sent to Denver
and reached yesterday in charge of W. E. Vance and W. D. Robbins,
both members of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen."

"Mary Louise Cruse Newland, 78, 2nd ave east,
died at her residence Wednesday Wednesday at 7:30 a.m.
She had been in Salt Lake City two months. Mrs. Newland was born July 10, 1870, in Missouri,
a daughter of Wesley French and Betty Raine Cruse. She had been residing in Morrison, Colo.
until coming to Salt Sal Lake City recently to visit relatives. She
was the widow of Milton Dale Newland. Survivors include a grandson, R. R. Tucker, Salt Lake
City, two brothers, Nicholas W. Cruse, Pine, Colo., Mitchell Cruse, California,
two sisters, Pearl Dake of Denver, Colo., and .... Long, Colorado."

June 3rd, at 5 p. m., at the home of the bride’s aunt, Mrs. John Gilkson,
on South Gaylord."

September 1916 " Charles Long and daughter Hazel were visitors at Insmont, Glenisle, Bailey, Riceville and Shawnee Tuesday."
October 1903 "The husband of Mrs. Bert Dake and Joe Cruse's sister died suddenly
in Oklahoma last week. Mr. Cunningham was railroading from Oklahoma into Texas,
and was expecting to give up his position in a short time and go to Denver to live.
Mrs. Cunningham was away visiting relatives in Missouri when the news reached her that
her husband was dead. Mrs. Charles Long is another sister of Mrs. Cunningham. Mr.
and Mrs. Bert Dake, Joe Cruse, and mother attended the funeral in Denver.
This wus a very sad and sudden death, and all extend their sincere sympathy to all the
friends and relatives of Mrs. Cunningham."

died Friday at her ranch home near Shaffers Crossing, Colo.
The funeral has been set for Tuesday at Golden. She was the widow of Charles F. Long,
who helped set up the first mountain telephone circuits in Colorado.
She was born in Clark county, Mo., in 1877."

January 1901 " Nick Cruse, who has been with his brother in eastern Colorado for several months past,
returned home last Monday. “They” say it was a fair reason that kept Nick away so long."
February 1924 Morrison "Mr. Pitts has been enjoying a vacation and N. W.
Cruse took his place at the meat market."
November 1958 "Funeral services were held at the Chapel of the Angels in
Denver on Wednesday for Nickolas W. Cruse, late of Pine,
who was a brother of M. M. Cruse of Lakewood, Calif.
Burial was at Conifer, Colorado."
