He married Sarah Jane Murphy, born 1841 (some say she had previously married a Bacon), daughter of Jeremiah and Mary Murphy . The 1860 Jefferson County, Indiana census has James Bacon and Sarah Jane, both born in Indiana, in the Wade Helton household. Wade, 33; Elisa, 29; James, 10; Ann C. Brown, 66, born KY. This MAY NOT be our Sarah Jane.
Paul served in the 37th Illinois Infantry, Co. K., with a military record indicating he was born 1838 in Canada; enlisted at Denmark 12/21/63; deserted 2/17/66, which was removed from his record by War Dept. 2/5/66, disch. 2/17/66.
His daughter Mary told her granddaughter Edna Lois that "when he came home finally he was not in good health. It was a long struggle for him to make his way back home when the war ended."

"An exchange confesses its mystification over the following divorce suit brought in this city.
Jane Side of Danville has asked the courts for a divorce from Paul Side, her husband, charging him with desertion. The only thing about the case puzzling the lawyers and judges is that the Jane Side in the case is Paul's Side, and the Paul Side in the matter is Jane's Side. But as Paul Side has treated his (Jane) Side in such a manner as to cause her (Jane) Side to decide that she can no longer put up with Paul Side, notwithstanding the he, Paul Side is legally her side. But again, as they are yet married, they are yet one Side, and yet Jane Side asks the court to decide that it is better for both Sides to 'shinny on their own Side," as it were. But just how the court is going to decide to suit both Sides when there is only one Side is enough to make any Side ache."

In 1900 he was in the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Danville, listing that he was divorced, had obtained citizenship in 1855, and had been in the country for 49 years. He was also listed as a resident there in the city directory of 1901.
There is a Jane Sides listed as widowed, owning a home on Lane Avenue in Marysville (page 1134B), age 60, six children living of seven. She and the family above have no month of birth, which may mean someone else gave the information.
Paul died April 05, 1912, in Cissna, Iroquois County, and his Missing image: scpaul3.JPG"> is in Sugar Creek Cemetery in the southeast part of the county. In the same cemetery three young grandchildren are buried
Paul's tombstone is the closest to the (Missing Image) scpaulbridge.JPG" bridge over Sugar Creek. Look closely at the arches of the bridge. They are the Ferris Wheel of the 1893 Chicago Exposition! The Wheel was dismantled and used to build the structure.
One daughter, Mary, told granddaughter Edna Lois Monk that Sarah worked as a seamstress. Mary said that when she was a young girl, Sarah would warn her of the "blue racer" snakes when playing near the stream. Mary said she had stayed for a while with the Cote grandparents, learned a little French, and was impressed with the strength of their religion. She became very homesick, so they took her home.

Sarah died February 09, 1930 in Hoopeston, and is buried in Potomac Cemetery. Her son-in-law George Monk's niece, Annie Redman, is also buried there.

Charles Side, 23, married Elzina Adwell on July 5, 1896 in Ambia, Indiana.
Elzina was 21, born at Otterbein, Indiana to Cary Adwell and Kiziah Ford.

Carey W. Adwell, born March 11, 1854 in Indiana, died July 25, 1916 in Milford, to be buried in Sugar Creek Chapel.
Charley Side is a farm laborer in Prairie Green, Iroquois County, Illinois in 1900. He was born April 1874, married to Elzina (Gertrude's death record said Elzina Adwell, born Indiana). They have been married four years and had three children. Two are living - Mable, 2, and Russell, 9 months. Elzina's sister Anna born October 1886 and brother James September 1882 are with them.

In 1910 Russell is not in the household in Stockland, Iroquois County, but they've added Mary, 6, Gertrude, 3, and Charles D., 10 months, and father Paul Sides, 75. Charles is a farm hand.
In 1920 Elzina is in Milford, Iroquois County as both the head and the wife. The head has Charles' age and parentage. Charles is a caretaker at a livery barn. In the household are Mable, Mary, and a son Verlin age 3.
In 1930 they're a few miles south in Butler Township, Vermilion County. (Charles' maternal grandparents had lived in this township). Charles is farming, and Verlin is the only child with them.
Luella married Charles Wilson, and in 1900 they're in Grant Township, Vermilion County. Charles $ Wilson is age 36, Luella J. is 19. They have Myrtle M, 9, Willie 7, Garald R, 5, and Flossie P. 1. 'Loni' SIDES Wilson .

Eliza J. Side, December 01, 1879, married Robert John McAlister March 11, 1896 in Vermilion County, Illinois, died July 23, 1953 in Portland, Oregon. The Vermilion 1900 census (ED 93, sheet 2A) has Robert, born January 1864 in Wisconsin of Scottish father/Irish mother, farming. He and Liza, born December 1878 (???), have been married four years, and have one child, Robert, born March 1886 in Illinois. There is also a son Larry/Harry, born May 1878 in Illinois. These may mean Liza is Robert's second wife.
In 1900 Vermilion County, Robert is farming, born January 1864 in Wisconsin, with Liza December 1878 Illinois. Robert M. Marh 1886 and Harry May 1888 were born in Illinois.
In 1910 Robert and Eliza McAllister are farming in Pilot Township, Vermilion. They have Jennie - 9, John - 6 , and a servant.
Robert John McAlister 1864-1917 is buried in Vermilion County # 54748932, with Rosa (Cassel) McAlister 1864-1889.
In 1920 Robert is not in Eliza's household in Danville. Jennie is listed as age 15, John as ONE, and then Florinda at 4 3/12. Jane Side, mother, age 78, is also in the household.
In 1930 Eliza is on Gilbert Street in Danville at age 50. The census clearly says widowed. Florence, age 15, is the only other member. Eliza is a hand-ironer in a laundry.

Her mother might be the Jennie G. Turner, 85, dying in Vancouver, Washington on January 30, 1958, parents George and Sarah Groves.

She was married in Hoopeston, Illinois on October 3, 1959 to Cletus Glenn Garner. Mr. Garner survives.
As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker, she enjoyed her family, took pride in her children and grandchildren. In addition she was interested in antiques and did a lot of reading.

Riley; loving father of Randy Riley, Carol (the late Jack) Frederick, David (Sue) Riley, Tina (David) Kozma, Tammy (Dale) Slyter and Lisa (Jeff) Brodie; dearest grandfather of 14 and great grandfather of 18. Survived also by sisters Betty Hollen and Wilma Underwood and brother Wayne (Sue) Riley. Preceded in death brothers Maurice and Don Riley and sisters Helen Jones, Charlotte Beckworth and Shirley Garner. Mr. Riley was a Veteran of the U S Army; and had retired from General Motors Truck & Bus. He was a member of Mt. Victory Church where he served as an usher. He enjoyed watching his beloved St. Louis Cardinals but most of all was a wonderful father.
Donald E. Underwood Sr., 50, of Hoopeston, died at 9:25 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, in Hoopeston.
Born Feb. 2, 1956, in Rantoul, he was the son of Carroll and Wilma (Riley) Underwood. Mr. Underwood is survived by his mother, Wilma Underwood of Hoopeston; one son, Donald E. Underwood Jr. of Danville; one daughter, Shenoa Dawn Underwood of Danville; five brothers, Randy Underwood, Brian (Becky) Underwood and Todd (Kellie) Underwood, all of Hoopeston, Rick Underwood of Vancouver, Wash., and David Underwood of LeRoy; and one sister, J. Renne (Dennis) Carter of Vancouver, Wash. His father preceded him in death.
He graduated from Hoopeston Area High School in 1974. He had worked as a machinist for the Georgia Pacific Co. in Georgia and had also been a semi-truck driver. He loved fishing and hunting.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at Floral Hill Cemetery in Hoopeston with Rev. Darryl McDaniel officiating. Visitation will be from 2-2:45 p.m. Friday at Brown-Alkire Funeral Home, 309 E. Washington St. in Hoopeston. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church.
