Federal census records began in 1860 for the area that would
become Weld County. At that time, it was part of the Nebraska
Territory and included in the Platte River Settlements.
After that date, federal census records were taken every ten
years. In 1870, Weld County was part of the Colorado Territory,
and the county boundaries were considerably larger than today.
Populated areas included Evans, Greeley, and St. Vrain.
The 1880 federal census was the first taken after Colorado
statehood. The area was subdivided into the Greeley and Erie
townships, along with rural enumeration districts. A Mortality
Schedule was also taken.
A Colorado state census was taken
in 1885. The county was divided into four enumeration districts.
The 1890 federal census records for Weld County were
destroyed in the aftermath of a fire at the Commercy Department
building in Washington DC. Unfortunately, no records remain.
By 1900, the eastern portion of Weld County had been divided
off to form the new counties of Washington, Logan, and Morgan. The
population in western Weld had also grown considerably, and would
continue to do so through the 1910 and 1920 censuses.
