ELMA EMMA (BAUER) SMITH

Elma Emma Smith was born on a farm in Sedgwick County July 17, 1916 to William and Frieda Wastenburg) Bauer. She died May 20, 2008.
 
Elma was baptized February 24, 1917 by Pastor Ernest Drekgern at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Venango, Nebraska. She was later confirmed by Rev. W.W. Wilk at St. Paul’s Lutheran in Amherst.
 
Elma received her education in a rural school in Phillips County. She worked for family in the area and in Denver, where she met her husband Max. They were married in Sterling October 1, 1948. They had one son, Carl. Max joined the Navy and they lived in Denver and California.
 
After retiring from the Navy, they moved to Amherst, where Max worked at the Amherst Elevator and later was Postmaster at the Amherst Post Office for several years. Elma was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Amherst. After Max retired, they moved to Holyoke.
 
Elma was preceded in death by her parents; husband Max; her son Carl and his wife Dorla; grandson Tom Smith; four sisters, Lenore Pontine, Margaret Ockinga, Marie Ewegen and Wilma Heermann; five brothers, Frederick, Carl, Walter, Albert and Tade.
 
She is survived by one sister, Dorothy Pulsipher of Denver; many nieces and nephews; her good friend Jane Krueger of Longmont; and special friends Marian Ferguson and Letha Prussman of Holyoke.
 
Funeral service was held Saturday, May 24 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Amherst, with Pastor Alan Borcher officiating. Interment followed at the Amherst Cemetery. Baucke Funeral Home directed the service.
 
 
 
MAX G. SMITH

Max G. Smith of Holyoke was born June 14, 1913 to Earl and Harriet Smith in Ottawa, Kansas. He died March 22, 1995 at his home at the age of 81.
 
Max was the oldest of three children. He moved with his family to Pueblo at the age of 7 and later the family moved to Denver. Max joined the Navy in December of 1941. He had three children from his marriage to Alice Freeman.
 
On October 1, 1948 he married Elma Bauer. They had one son, Carl. Max and Elma lived in Garden Grove, California while he served in the Navy. They moved to Amherst where Max worked at the Amherst Elevator. He retired as Postmaster of the Amherst Post Office. Max and Elma moved to Holyoke in September of 1991. Max was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Amherst. He was confirmed into the church on May 22, 1964.
 
Preceding him in death were his parents, brother Theron, son Carl and daughter-in-law Darla.
 
Survivors include Elma of the family home; children Maxine Fox of Denver, Georgine Smith of Denver and Theron Smith of Riverside, California; sister Thelma Freeman and husband George of Denver; a step-grandson; seven grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and a host of friends and other relatives.
 
Services were Saturday, March 25, 1995 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Amherst with Rev. Harold Rathjen officiating. Interment was in the Amherst Cemetery.
