ELMA MILDRED (ROCKWELL) LUTZE 

Holyoke Enterprise, Holyoke, Colorado, August 20, 1964 

MRS. HENRY LUTZE DIES IN OREGON; FUNERAL TOMORROW 

Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 21, at 2:00 p.m. in the Christian church for Mrs. Henry C. Lutze, longtime area resident who passed away unexpectedly early Monday morning, August 17. 

The Rev. James Dobyns will officiate, and arrangements are in charge of the Lewis Funeral Home. Interment will be at the Pleasant Valley cemetery southeast of Holyoke. 

Mr. and Mrs. Lutze had just arrived by train in Salem, Oregon where they had planned to vacation with their daughter, Miss Delores Lutze, and other relatives on the coast. Mrs. Lutze complained of feeling ill on Sunday and passed away shortly after admission to a Salem hospital. Death was attributed to a heart attack. 

Elma Mildred Rockwell was born to Thomas Henry Rockwell and Pearl Elizabeth Stroud Rockwell in Seymour, Iowa, on January 17, 1907. She moved at age 8 to Holyoke with her parents and has resided here and in the Pleasant Valley community since that time. She was united in marriage to Henry C. Lutze on August 17, 1927, and to this union four children were born, all of whom survive. They are: Mrs. Bennie (Dorothy) Simon, Denver; Mrs. Gilbert (Phyllis) Kumm, Holyoke; Miss Delores Lutze, Salem, Oregon; and Leroy Lutze, Holyoke. 

Mrs. Lutze is also survived by her husband, Henry; a brother, M.O. "Bill" Rockwell, and a sister, Mrs. Joy Adams, both of Holyoke; several grandchildren; numerous other relatives and many friends. 

 

FRED W. LUTZE 

Holyoke Enterprise, Holyoke, Colorado, February 27, 1947 

FUNERAL SERVICES HELD FOR FRED W. LUTZE 

Funeral services were held from the First Baptist Church in Holyoke for Fred W. Lutze, 54, who passed away Friday morning. Services were in charge of Rev. C.C. Whittington, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene. 

Fred William Lutze, the son of Freida* and William Lutze, was born at Holyoke, Colorado on June 24, 1893. In the year 1917 he was married to Viola Tomlin and to this union was born one son, Edward. Mrs. Lutze passed away in March of 1919. In March of 1920 he was again married to Anna Tomlin, and to this union was born eight children. One son, Paul preceded him in death in February 1937. 

He is survived by his wife, Anna, and eight children, Edward of Pasadena, California, Geraldine Houser of Nampa, Idaho, Lois, Leslie, Mary Louise, Carol, Florine and Junior all of Holyoke, also three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Martha Rehfeld of Jefferson, Oregon, Mrs. Minnie Waddle of Longview, Washington, Louise Teese of Scottsbluff, Nebraska and Henry and Walter O. Lutze. Also a host of other relatives and friends. 

Mr. Lutze, having spent his entire life in this community, was widely known for his willingness, his acts of helpfulness and kindness. He was a true friend and neighbor. He had been a member of the Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department for the past ten years and was a past chief. He had given freely of his time to the department for which he had the highest regard.   Interment was in the State Line Cemetery.

FRIEDERICKA CHRISTINA (SCHWAB) LUTZE 

State Herald, Holyoke, Colorado, September 18, 1914 

Friedericka Christina* Lutze was born in Negargartach, Oberamt Heilbeoun Wuertenburg, Germany June 3, 1866 and died at Holyoke Colorado September 9th, 1914, at the age of 48 years, 3 months and 16 days. 

She came to America in 1887 and located at Holyoke, Colorado. Soon after coming here she went to Denver to work, where she met and was joined in holy wedlock with William Lutze in June 1890. Soon after this event the young people returned to Holyoke and located six miles east of town. They had lived at the present home nine years. 

She was converted to God while in Denver, in the German Methodist Church. Later on she joined the Evangelical association and remained a true and faithful member unto death. She was the happy mother of three sons and three daughters. She leaves to mourn their loss devoted husband, three sons, three daughters, two sisters, Mr. E. Eichele and Mrs. Louise Schroeder who were present at the funeral and one sister in Germany. There are also many friends and neighbors who mourn the loss of one who loved and was loved. 

The funeral services were conducted from the State Line Church after a short service at the home. Rev. A.B. Schwab of Imperial, Nebraska preaching the sermon and the body was laid to rest in the church cemetery. 

 

HENRY CARL LUTZE 

Holyoke Enterprise, Holyoke, CO, December 28, 1989 

Henry Carl Lutze, the son of William and Fredericka (Schwab) Lutze, was born August 7, 1903 on a farm southeast of Holyoke. He attended school at Pleasant Valley, which was known as District No. 5. 

His mother died when he was quite young, so he had to quit school when he was in the seventhgrade. He helped his father with the farming and continued to farm following his father's death in 1920. In 1921 Henry's brother, Fred, moved in and lived with him for two years. They did quite a lot of blacksmithing for the neighbors. 

Henry married Elma Rockwell on August 17, 1926 in Julesburg. They lived and farmed southeast of Holyoke. Elma passed away in 1964. Henry continued to make his home on the farm. 

He became interested in antiques and acquired a large collection which he sold at auction in 1984 before moving to Holyoke where he had resided since that time. He took an avid interest in the history of Pleasant Valley and the southeast part of Phillips County including the records of the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. 

Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Simon of Denver, Phyllis Kumm and husband Gilbert of Holyoke and Delores Bashford and husband Albert of Aloha, OR; one son, LeRoy Lutze and wife Donna M. of Holyoke; one brother, Walter Lutze and wife Gerry of Florida; 13 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Elma; three sisters; and one brother. Henry passed away Monday, December 18, 1989 in Holyoke at the age of 86. 

Funeral services were held Friday, December 22, 1989 at the Christian Church in Holyoke with Rev. Jim Mort officiating. Burial followed in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

PAUL LUTZE

LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL BOY DIES IN DENVER 

Paul Lutze Succumbs After Month’s Illness; Services Are Held Here 

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church for Paul Lutze, son of Mr. and Mrs.* Fred Lutze, who passed away last Friday at a Denver hospital from a spleen disorder. The youth, a sophomore at the local high school, had been ill for about two weeks before he was taken to Denver early last week, but it is thought that he may have been ill for some time before the trouble became apparent. 

Rev. Elsie McGaughey of Haigler, Nebraska, a Nazarene minister, officiated at the funeral services, and interment was made in the family lot in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. More than 150 high school students, including members of the band, the sophomore class and the boys in athletics, attended the services in a body. The following schoolmates of the boy served as pallbearers: Albert Presba, Dale McDorman, Walter Pugh, Merle Mutchie, Rex Cox and Virgil Sprague. 

Paul Arthur Lutze was born February 28, 1921 at Lamar, Nebraska but came to Holyoke shortly afterward with his parents when they returned here after having resided at Lamar for about a year. 

He is survived by his parents, two brothers and five sisters, Leslie, Fred, Lois, Geraldine, Mary Louise, Carol and Florine, and one half-brother, Ed Lutze. 

Holyoke Enterprise, Holyoke, Colorado, February 25, 1937 

Paul Arthur Lutze was born January 28, 1921 at Lamar, Nebraska and departed this life on February 4, 1937 at Denver, Colorado, age 16 years and 7 days. Nearly all of his life has been spent at Holyoke. He was a sophomore in the Phillips County High School band.  On January 27 he was taken sick and later was taken to a hospital at Denver, where he passed away. 

At the time of his death he was president of the Nazarene Young People’s Society and secretary of the Sunday school. He was converted at the age of 10 years, later sanctified and joined the Church of the Nazarene at Holyoke. 

The many kind friends of Paul made it possible for his mother to be with him the last few days he lingered here. Each night as his mother left him he would say “Goodbye Mother” until the last visit with him as she left his bedside, he said “Goodnight Mother” and again, as she left the room, he raised himself from his pillow and said “Goodnight Mother.” Two hours later he suddenly took leave of this earthly temple to take up his abode in that house not made with hands eternal in the Heavens. 

He leaves to mourn his loss his mother and father, three brothers, Edward William, Leslie James and Fred Walter, Jr., five sisters, Lois Mae, Geraldine, Mary Louise, Carol and Florene Ruth; his grandfather and grandmother, Mr. and Mrs. J.N. Tomlin of Palisade, Colorado; two great aunts, Mrs. Louise Schroeder and Mrs. Minnie Eichel of Holyoke, besides many other relatives and friends. 

We shall miss him greatly but all happy in the assurance that we shall meet again when the battles of life are all over.

THOMAS EDWARD LUTZE (INFANT) 

Holyoke Enterprise, Holyoke, Colorado, October 22, 1964 

LUTZE BABY DIES; FUNERAL SATURDAY 

Funeral services were held Saturday morning, October 17, at Saint Patrick’s church here for Thomas Edward Lutze, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Lutze. Interment was at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. 

The Lutze baby was born at the local hospital on September 12, 1964 and passed away unexpectedly at the Lutze home Friday morning, October 16. He is survived by his parents, a brother Donald, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Spohn and Henry Lutze, and numerous other relatives. The Lewis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. 

 

THOMAS EDWARD LUTZE 

Holyoke Enterprise, Holyoke, Colorado, December 12, 1996 

Thomas Edward Lutze of Manitou Springs was born June 26, 1908 to William Ludwig Carl and Fredericka Christina [Schwab] Lutze in Holyoke. He died November 29, 1996 at Pikes Peak Hospice in Colorado Springs. Lutze was 88. 

On July 29, 1950 he married Gerry L. Brown in Elyria, OH. Walt attended Cornell College in Iowa and served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Holyoke and was active in the Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He was also a member of Holyoke Methodist Church. Walt was an avid reader. Lutze lived most of his life in Holyoke before moving to Daytona Beach, Florida in 1966. He was in the construction business for many years. After retiring in Florida, he earned many art show awards for his 3-D weathered wood wall pieces. Walt and Gerry returned to Colorado in 1994 to reside in Manitou Springs. 

Preceding him in death were three sisters and two brothers. Survivors include wife Gerry of Manitou Springs, daughter Melanie Adams of Longmont; son Lon L. of Manitou Springs; grandchildren Kelly Strachan of Arvada, Eric Strachan of Boston, MA and Stephanie, Greg and Christina Lutze, all of Manitou Springs. 

A private family memorial service is planned for a later date.
