FUNERAL SERVICES HELD FRIDAY FOR FRANK
KASSING
Funeral services were held Friday from the Methodist
church for Frank Kassing, who had lived in the Haxtun community since
1909. Mr. Kassing, who had been ill only a few days, passed away in his
sleep the night of December 31.
Daniel Frank Kassing, son of
Frederick William and Mary Freye Kassing, was born March 23, 1876, in
Clatonia, Nebraska.
He attended the public schools of his local
community and then spent some time in a religious school in Mt.
Pleasant, Iowa.
He was united in marriage to Flora Fix on March
16, 1905 at Kramer, Nebraska. They made their home on a farm near
Clatonia until the year 1909 when they moved to Haxtun. In 1911 they
took over the rights to a homestead north-east of Haxtun and continued
to farm until his retirement about 1941, when he moved into town.
Mr. Kassing took his departure from this life soon after retiring on the
last day of the old year, December 31, 1951, at the age of 75 years,
nine months and eight days. He was preceded in death by his wife on
September 18, 1940; three brothers and three sisters. He is survived by
one brother, David Kassing, and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Fix, both of
Haxtun.
He was a faithful member of the Methodist church of
Haxtun. He was ever a true and loyal friend of its ministers. He was as
regular as his health would permit in his attendance at its services of
worship and its Sunday school sessions. He took great delight in its
advancement and sacrificed in a real and material way to aid in its
progress. His influence was largely responsible for the recent
reorganization of a Sunday school class for older men. This class ought
to stand through the coming years as a memorial to his sincere devotion
to his Master and the Master’s way of life.
His ship of life had
encountered and out ridden many earthly storms, and, as nearly as many
of us were able to determine, was worthy of sailing on into another year
of hope and promise. He responded, however, to the warm summons of
inviting breezes, flung his sails to the winds, sailed into the harbor
of eternal bliss and dropped anchor in his desired haven of peace and
rest. He has gone to sleep, much as he desired, never to waken here, but
to rise to new freedoms and joys of the great land beyond the river.
He shall be absent from us in the flesh, but his noble spirit of
honesty to all and his loyalty to what he thought to be the right will
long live in the memory of his loving relatives and admiring friends.

Someone has said that “Death is the
gateway to life.” And someone so it is to such souls as that of Mrs.
Frank Kassing who all her life was looking forward to life eternal.
She had been in ill health for a number of months and on September 18th,
1940, she was taken violently ill and within a few hours times was
ushered into eternity at the home of her sister Mrs. Herman Miller.
Her maiden name was Miss Flora Fix. She was the daughter of Leonard and
Sophia Fix of Kramer, Nebraska, and was born April 14, 1878. She was 62
years, 5 months and 4 days of age at the time of her death.
Her
young womanhood days were spent at Kramer, Nebraska. Here she was united
in marriage to Frank Kassing, on March 16, 1905. On March 1, 1909 they
settled on their ranch near Haxtun, where they lived the remainder of
her life.
There remain to mourn her departure five out of a
family of thirteen. She had five full sisters and five full brothers,
besides two half brothers. Two sisters are living Mrs. Barbara Fischer,
Milford, Nebraska and Mrs. Herman Miller of Haxtun, Colorado; three
brothers, Otto, Edward and Henry Fix all of Haxtun.
She was a
member of the Methodist church practically all of her life having united
with the church when but a little girl. When they moved to Haxtun she
united with the local Methodist church under the ministry of Rev. J.
Winterbourne. The Kingdom had first place in her heart and life. With
untold sacrifice she did her bit to support the church by her prayers,
her gifts and her presence. She was loyal to the ministry and their home
was always open to them. Such homes are an inspiration to the Christian
ministry and without which the ministry of any church would fail. And in
death we can hear Him say “In as much as ye did it unto one of the least
of these my brethren ye have done it unto me.” And so we too can sing
with the poet.
“My Jesus as thou wilt
If loved ones must
depart
Suffer not sorrow’s flood
To overwhelm my heart
For they
are the best with thee
Their race and conflict won
Let me but
follow them
My Lord they will be done.”
Funeral services were
held from the Methodist church in Haxtun, Sunday, at 2 p.m. September
22, 1940. Rev. R.W. Drummond officiating. She was laid to rest in the
Haxtun cemetery. Music was furnished by a mixed quartette consisting of
Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Starkebaum, Mr. Paul Hohn and Mrs. R.W. Drummond, with
Mrs. Ralph Scott at the piano.
