Melvin
Leroy Hofmeister, 76, Haxtun, passed away July 23, 2004 at Sterling
Regional MedCenter. He was born September 25, 1927 in Haxtun to Gladys
(Switzer) and Dan Hofmeister. He attended school in Holyoke and
graduated from Holyoke High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the
United States Army and played in the military band. He was proud of
playing for two Kentucky Derbys while enlisted.
He received a
bachelor of science from Colorado State Teachers College and later his
master’s of education from the University of Denver. He served as
principal in schools at Amherst, Highland Center, and Rockland. Before
retiring he taught science for 22 years for the Cherry Creek School
District.
On June 22, 1951, Melvin married Dolores Haynes at the
Church of the Brethren, Haxtun.
His memberships included the
B.P.O.P.E. #2122 Lodge of Englewood, an honorary member of the Fleming
Veteran of Foreign Wars, the National Rifle Association, and Pheasants
Forever. He loved cooking, hunting, coaching basketball, watching
football, reading, and music of all kinds. He especially loved visiting
with his grandson, Wade.
Survivors include his wife; son Brad
and wife Cyndi Hofmeister, Fort Morgan; grandson Wade; sister Nelda and
husband Dale O’Neal; brother Bill and wife Neila; and many nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers
Raymond and Dale.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 27 at
the Church of the Brethren, with Reverend Pfaltzgraff officiating.
A graveside military rite was given by the American Legion Fred C.
Lewman Post 137.
