Christ Edward Gathe Obituary

State Herald, Holyoke, Colorado, June 16, 1899

Christ Edward Gathe was born in Germany in 1864 and died at his home in Phillips County, Colorado, on the 12th day of June 1899. He came to the United States in 1878 and located in Iowa.

In 1880 he took up his residence in Nebraska where in 1888 he was united in marriage with Miss Lizzie M. Frahm who survives him. To them were born five children, Maude, aged 10 years; Gertrude 8; Clara 6; Edna 4; and Eddie 18 months.
In 1888 he came to Colorado and located in Phillips County on a homestead. About two years of the time he resided in Holyoke. He lost his building and goods by fire and they moved back to the farm where for several years he had been in the cattle business.

He was a Master Mason and was also a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge of Holyoke. He was a member of the Lutheran Church. About one year ago he was taken with very serious stomach trouble and he took a trip to eastern Nebraska in the hope that a change of climate would prove beneficial but the change seemed to aggravate the disease and he returned home.

He was able to go about and attend to his business till about four or five weeks before he died but was unable to secure medical treatment that gave him any relief. He was a very active and energetic young man and had a wide acquaintance in the county.

The family has the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement. The funeral services were conducted from the
home, Rev. Chase of Holyoke preaching the funeral sermon after with the burial services were conducted by the Holyoke Masonic Lodge, and the remains were buried in the Holyoke Cemetery.
