Hilda Viola [Knode] Ferguson, 88, Haxtun, died Tuesday,
October 5, 1999, at the Haxtun Hospital District. She was born on
November 14, 1910, to Gordie Ivan and Bessie Lola [Sharrar] Knode in
Memphis, NE, in the same farm home in which her mother had been born.
She was the first of three children. She and her family lived on the
Sharrar family farm until Hilda was nine years old, at which time they
moved to a farm in the Fairfield community northeast of Haxtun. Hilda
completed eighth grade at a two-room country school close to her home
and then graduated from Haxtun High School with the class of 1929.
Following her graduation from high school, Hilda moved to Denver. For 10
years she worked at various jobs before returning to Haxtun. Upon her
return to Haxtun, she became reacquainted with Arlo M. Ferguson, a
former schoolmate. She and Arlo were married on May 20, 1939, at the
Methodist Church in Julesburg. They made their home on a portion of land
owned by Arlo's father.
Mrs. Ferguson and her family raised
cattle, hogs, chickens and turkeys at their farm northeast of Haxtun.
She especially enjoyed raising a vegetable garden each year and shared
produce with her neighbors. Hilda was a member of the Fairfield Covenant
Church. Hilda and Arlo moved to Haxtun when they retired from farming in
the 1990s. Their farm is now the home of grandson LeMoine Ferguson. She
resided in her home in Haxtun until June 1999, when she moved into the
Heritage Living Center, Haxtun.
Hilda is survived by two
grandsons, LeMoine Ferguson, Haxtun, and Nicholas Ferguson, Holyoke; her
daughter-in-law Marian Ferguson, Holyoke; and several nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
Arlo Ferguson; her son, Leon Dale Ferguson; and two younger brothers,
Ivan and Keith Knode.
Funeral services for Hilda Ferguson were
held on Saturday, October 9, 1999, at the Fairfield Covenant Church with
Pastor Tom Ervasti officiating. Interment followed at the Haxtun
Cemetery.
