Pioneer Had Been Suffering for 2 Year, He was 74 Years Old
Funeral services were held at the family home here Wednesday afternoon
for Carl Eichele, 74, Phillips County pioneer, who died Tuesday
afternoon at the Holyoke hospital from hardening of the arteries. The
funeral sermon was preached by Rev. J.W. Bailey, pastor of the Holyoke
Baptist church, and the body was buried in the State Line Cemetery,
southeast of Holyoke.
Mr. Eichele had been in ill health for the
past two years, and last year had one of his legs amputated and the
other one a short time ago. Mr. Eichele had been a resident of Phillips
County for 41 years. Born in Schanburg, Germany, July 10, 1860, he was
left an orphan together with his brother, at the age of six.
He
received a common school education and served for three years in the
German army. Later he took up farming which occupation he followed
throughout his life. In 1885 he came to America, settled at Denver,
Colorado and was married there to Minnie Schwab April 19, 1890.
Three year later they moved to Phillips County, where they homesteaded
six miles east and two miles north of Holyoke, residing there until 14
years ago when they moved to Holyoke. Mr. Eichele was confirmed in the
Lutheran church at the age of 18, and later became a member of the
Methodist church in Holyoke.
Left to mourn are the widow, two
sons and one daughter, Mrs. Carl Radtke, and Otto and William, besides
seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
